Spacer Installation on 765,000 volt line

observer144 says...

I'm surprised that the line does not have a weather coating. It looks like just steel cables. Or maybe that is the protection and the actual electrical conduit is inside, but the outer surface sure looked energized.

I guess I expected a plastic or rubber coating.

The Infinadeck Omnidirectional Treadmill - Smarter Every Day

MilkmanDan says...

Very cool.

I sure would have thought that it would be a platform with hundreds of partially inset mouse/trackballs, rather than treadmills on axes 90 degrees apart. I mean ... sure, any 2D vector can be split into a sum of two orthogonal components. But with redundant inset trackballs you could get stuff like spot pivots that are much finer scale than the scale of the 2-3 inch wide secondary axis treads...

On the other hand, these guys actually have a working prototype, so they clearly thought things through and decided that the orthogonal treadmill solution was better. Rubber meats road trumps off-the-cuff theoretical any day!

De-Icing 2.0

AeroMechanical says...

I wonder how this method compares to just spraying the liquid butane and whatever directly onto the ice. I suppose it's probably not good for the rubber and polymer parts, but then, neither is fire.

The Nick Cage clip he pointed to looked like some sort of rubber mask or something, sort-of okay, but the facial expressions just didn't work somehow. We're not at the point where you can fake a tape and experts can't tell the difference.

Screaming Marmot

StukaFox says...

I hate fucking Marmots -- they eat battery cables and brake lines (yes, really). They're a plague up at Mt. Rainer if you park your car overnight. You'll see cars covered with blue tarps held down by rocks in the parking lots of the park: those are hikers trying to keep the fuckers from eating anything rubber on the car.

King Tut - SNL

StukaFox says...

Listen -- do you know how much high-grade Peruvian flake we were hoovering back in the late 70's? Steve Martin was the perfect comedian for coke-sniffers: wild and energetic, creative on script and off the cuff. We liked our comedians Wild and Crazy and our afternoon bumps in little McDonald's coffee-stirrer spoons.

Those were the days, my friend, those were the days.

GRAAAAAAAAAAAMPA BOUGHT A RUBBER!

Eh, this is just not that funny. It's mildly amusing at best, and in that sense, it is classic SNL.

He used an excavator and a bulldozer. Real men use their broken backs and a pick axe. ;-)
30 mil isn't 30 millimeters...his liner isn't over an inch thick...he wishes. I think mine is 45 mil. It's thick rubber.
Cool stuff. He has a different idea of what a pond is and what it's for than I do, but to each his own. He made a great place for the family...but they better learn pond safety...you could lose the whole family in that deep end and never see them.
