We're ban happy on the Sift and it sucks (Blog Entry by blankfist)

longde says...

let me clarify a few things:

-I didn't say you wanted the comments to flourish; I don't think you do. I'm saying I don't think you would mind or care if they did. I see you as indifferent.
-I never said or advocated a permaban for people making racist or hate statements. I do think such statements should be prohibited; there are many ways to do so, just like we prohibit other things on the sift.
-We have to use some judgement, but hate or racist statements against any race should be off-limits. I also see the distinction about statements which are about race and racist statements. What stood out for me in BKs comment:
*The tone of the comment; I didn't read any sarcasm, irony or jest in the comment; and BK didn't clarify that there was any.
*The blanket, non-factual statement which cast all members of the race in an extremely negative light. Let me put it this way: If BK had said "BurdT, this is why people call you nigger" I think we agree that would be bad, since it targets BurdT specifically due to his race. However, BKs statement is much worse, because rather than target BurdT only, he is slurring any and all black people who will read the thread. No qualifiers; these people on the video are scum, so you of the incidental same ethnic group are also scum. WTF
*Using "nigger" was the least of it, IMO; but clearly he was using it its most derogatory way

Yes, I can ignore BK, but what about new potential black sifters? Shouldn't the sift be a welcoming place to all? When statement like that are not called out and dealt with, it implies acceptance to those unfamiliar with the sift.

We have a tolerant community -- for racial slurs against and a hostile environment against certain groups. A few of us want to discourage that, while others don't mind if that behavior flourishes.
I thought you said the original statement went over the line. Now in the same thread, you say its a benign comment. Which is it?
And what makes you the arbiter of what should and should not offend someone? What benchmark do you use to determine what goes over the line. Also, if you really think that a comment which haphazardly disparages a whole group is OK, what anti-black statement would be over the line.

No one on here wants the racial comments to "flourish". Let's scale back the hyperbole a touch, please.
His comment was relatively benign. I see that there's probably some racism in his heart, which I don't condone, but that doesn't mean I want to see him banned over it.
You seem to want some hard and fast rules. But then how would you enforce those? No suggestion of racism or you're banned? No alluding to racist speech? Don't say "n word" because it's the same as "n er"? What would make you the arbiter of what is enforced as "hostile" and what isn't? Would you tolerate bans of people calling rich white people greedy or honkeys? Or is it that some racism is tolerated?
We have a great community here, and we've been surprisingly tolerant and civil over the past five years, so let's not go mucking that up by finding excuses to run unpopular members off the site.

So what about people who don't have thick skin, and don't want to have to grow it to participate in VideoSift's community?
Not to mention, aren't we talking about racist comments? Why should anyone have to be "thick skinned" about that?

Last I checked we had a pretty tolerant community here. You beg to differ? You mean to tell me one relatively benign comment from some assclown is enough to make this place a danger for those without thick skin?

Yeah, I knew exactly who you were talking about. I think they both acted like snotty children at one point or another during that debacle and I'm pretty sure I told each of them that at the time.

I don't think consistency is really all that hard, actually. Maybe perfect consistency is unobtainable, but we could certainly do way better than we have when it comes to racial slurs. It would help if the rules would be rewritten and/or clarified when decisions are made. There was a pretty good discussion about improving the rules a while ago and I made some suggestions that several people, including dag, seemed to think would clarify the rules. The rules were never updated, though.

In reply to this comment by gwiz665:
Oh, I didn't mean that you were the butt hurt one. Last time, burdturgler was the one crying left and right. Consistency is hard to get in a human system, and this is certainly a human system. The admins cannot act unless they know about it and you can only assume they will know about it if someone reports it.

I've seen plenty of transgressions of different sorts around here, but I've become more of a live and let live type lately, since I transgress lots in my own way once in a while.

Anyways, happy new years.
In reply to this comment by xxovercastxx:
I don't feel all that strongly about it, either way, but some consistency would be nice.

In reply to this comment by gwiz665:
Because no one has been all butthurt about it this time. The whole spook thing was bull shit, I think.

How come blankfist was suspended for saying "spook" but GorillaMan has been on a 2-year "nigger" streak with not even a finger wag?

Dave Chappelle at The Laugh Factory - Kramer

Yogi says...

Why won't someone film him doing something...let him write and direct the whole thing...give him all the power I don't care...I'm sick of not having Dave around.

Also about that Kramer thing. Don't you think...if we're able to forgive Michael Vick and let him get on with his career we could do the same with Kramer? I mean come on...what's worse? A racial slur or killing dogs?

Crazy Racist Bitch Assaults Postal Worker

Matthu says...

Maybe if we would ALL grow up and face our histories we could move forward with this fucking word and maybe 50-100 years from now the word could go back to meaning what it originally meant. Ignorant. That's what the word originally meant.

The reason why the word is offensive to black people is one of two reasons:

A) As a black person, they have been conditioned to be offended by the word. Literally. You think Lebron James was born knowing what nigger meant? No. He was told, hey that's a racial slur and it should -REALLY- fucking bother you to hear it, or

B) They knew family members who were slaves and that's shameful to them and the n-word reminds them that their entire race was enslaved a short time ago.

That's the thing. It's embarrassing and shameful to think that your race was enslaved. But tbh, it's also pretty fucking embarrassing and shameful to think that my great, or great great grandfather might've owned slaves and seen nothing wrong with that.

Well too fucking bad. As much as it might be uncomfortable, we need to face our histories. The altruistic approach, I think, would be to move forward with the word and that's not going to happen if we play make-believe and instead use "The N-Word".

So, I guess 4chan is on the right path. If everyone used the word nigger like 4chan does, in no time at all the word would be as offensive as calling someone a dumbass or a clown or a douche. Black people need to relinquish the word and realize they're not niggers.

I wasn't faulting anyone for not knowing he's Inuk, my comment was more of a disagreement with your characterization of "eskimo" as a racial slur.>> ^kir_mokum:

>> ^nanrod:
Are youse guys really lecturing Throbbin on the use of the term Eskimo. Why don't you ask him instead, he is after all an Inuk. And while Eskimo has become a passe term in Canada it is still commonly used in Alaska. And while the Unuit people may find offensive meaning in the term it has hardly been used as a racial insult. For the most part it has been used as a generic term to describe all Arctic peoples by people who had no idea of its real meaning.

you can't really fault anyone on that since it's not exactly self evident info.

While I'm not crazy about the word 'Eskimo' (it's actually a Cree word that the French adopted), we do use it amongst ourselves.
As for others using it - a friend of mine once asked an Inuk Elder what he thought about the word. The Elder responded that we never asked white people what they wanted to be called (we call them Qallunaq), so why should we get upset about what people call us?

Awesome post. This needs to be re-read again. A word is not derogatory unless it is meant to be so. There are words for other cultures everywhere on the planet. Someone should see what Russia and China have decided to call peoples living in the Siberian Tundra. Same situation?

Eskimo in Canada became a political hot button issue, but the word was not meant to be offensive. It is mildly like the usage of Indian in place of Native Americans. All Indians I know do not mind; if they do they tell you what they prefer (Apache, Ute, etc...).

Go compare the history with "Eskimo" and bigotry. Then look up any of the rest that are very well known biased, derogatory, racial slurs, and more...like: Ni;#er, Uncle Tom, Aunt Jemima, Apple (Indian (or N.A.) that acts white), and ethnic slurs across the world.

I'll look for that.
This is so true. It must be true everywhere, like Germany, Russia. I heard there is a similar feeling in the Netherlands, the north/south thing.
I try really hard not to stereotype southerners. It's just that as I was growing up in rural Colorado, so many of the people with the strongest southern accents also turned out to be the most bigoted and fat-headed. And bullying. In my case they were almost always west-Texans.
I know it's not true across the board, but it's funny how those things get rubbed into your skin.

The funny thing to me is that I live in the South, and I find way more bigoted and fat-headed stuff coming out of Northerners mouths whenever I'm up North. Two examples right in this very video as a matter of fact.

Someone should tag this *nsfw for the racial slur.

Choggie- as we've previously discussed, your return to VideoSift was predicated on the condition that you would adhere to the rules of the community. Over the past few weeks I've noticed a degeneration towards the old pre-ban Choggie with increased racial slurs and personal attacks.
You've been on Sift probation during this period and unfortunately, I don't think it's working out.
You are hereby suspended from VideoSift.
