Zero Punctuation: Next Gen buyers guide

RedSky says...

@VoodooV

I'm getting the impression people are getting a little overly bent out of shape about the Xbox One's convergence features.

Spec-wise it's all but identical to the PS4 so no apparent compromise has been made on performance. Hardware similarity will also all but guarantee easy ports. If anything I reckon this gen will be the closest we get to platform neutrality because of this.

For all its focus on non-game features MS must know that games sell consoles. They would be foolish in divesting away from first party titles or exclusives. If they get more purchases via spruiking their TV integration that will put them in a better position to pay for these.

Force bundling Kinect will surely inflate the price but it remains to be seen by how much. If they price themselves outside the PS4's range and people feel like it's an unnecessary accessory they won't use then it will hurt them obviously. Having said that, it's functionality actually looks genuinely interesting (and powerful) unlike their first Kinect beta test.

At least for me what's always turned me off Xbox and eventually convinced me to get a PS3 is the paid multiplayer. Coming from a PC I reckon it's flat out outrageous to charge people for what is effectively P2P quality multiplayer, let alone to them smother the hub with advertising. This will obviously not change for the One so I have no intention of giving them my money.

Xbox One unveil highlights

I prefer FPS on the PC - using a joystick is just frustrating. But then again I couldn't imagine playing Little Big Planet on a PC. (although the Xbox 360 controller works great for many PC games, and it's nice that Steam is trying a joystick-friendly interface for big-tv-attached-PC-gaming.)

The thing I really hate is that both Xbox 360 and PS3 support USB keyboards and mice. It's completely up to the developers to include that in their game or not. I got a reply once from the makers of Resistance, and the reason they said they didn't include it was because it would make it unfair for multiplayer... well how about Single Player? or have a server setting that would allow/disallow keyboard+mouse?

PS4 Announcement - Abridged Version

EvilDeathBee says...

I'm really surprised so many people actually give that big a shit about how the console actually looks. Seriously, how often do you sit and just stare at the console itself?

I've found myself migrating from my 360 to the PS3, it's just a better system for gaming. You can buy most new releases online (Games on Demand is pathetic), you don't have to pay for MP, you don't have to put up with MS's constant dashboard changes that are consistently awful, nor put up with superfluous BS like Avatars and the Welcome screen.

The only thing I don't like is the controller, and the PS4's controller looks great (except the stupid Share button), so I'm quite excited for the PS4, but also keen to see what MS will be offering and if they'll cock it up

PS4 Announcement - Abridged Version

RFlagg says...

I was underwhelmed to say the least during the presentation... Media Molecule got the biggest applause of the night. Got excited for a moment when Blizzard came out, then was let down by the Diablo 3 announcement, was hoping for something more exciting, but even if they release Titan on anything but PC they won't announce it at all until Blizzcon so not sure what I was expecting there... and yeah, the guy coming out to say we'll announce the next Final Fantasy at E3 was a cheap shot. And nothing really new from Destiny. I think the whole event was best summed up by XBox's Major Nelson who said something along the lines of "Have an event announcing your new console and not show it, that's one way of doing it."

I use my PS3 mostly for Bluray (it was by far the cheapest way into Bluray at the time) and Netflix (as my 360 sucks on Netflix on my network for some reason) and rarely games, that's what my PC is for and 360... It was nice to see it is indeed using x86 as rumored, and I was a little lost on why they didn't at least mention that it does have a Bluray drive during the event... something they mentioned in a followup press release as if they forgot...

The question now is, does Microsoft show early or wait for E3 for the whole show? They could do an pre-E3 show and show how it should be done... This was just badly handled. I mean 2 hours for what could have taken 30 minutes tops... and I still would have at least showed the system.

Is Someone Playing GTA More Likely To Kill People?

• One of my son's friends have never pointed a PS3 controller at him and accidentally maimed or killed him.
• No one I know has ever used their PS3 controller to defend themselves and accidentally killed an innocent person or successfully stopped a home invasion.

Penn Jillette: Don't Leave Atheists Out on Christmas

rottenseed says...

I don't agree with Penn's beautifully put sentiment — actually it's not that I disagree, it's that I don't think it matters. Christmas means just as much about Christianity as it does buying the latest PS3 games for your kids, or getting together and having spiked eggnog. I'm not offended by it...it's just a word. I'm not offended by the nativity scene, it's just part of a tradition that's based on a belief.

So I would say is, stop excluding yourself because of the name of the season.

Xbox 360 and PS3 Are Just Very Crap PCs

CryEngine3 - Tech Trailer (Crysis 3)

I run 2560x1600 graphics and like to pull as many fps as possible. Also I gotta disagree I have a hellacious goodtime playing todays visceral FPS shooters multiplayer online.>> ^Fletch:

At least the next dumbed-down piece of consolized crapola will look pretty. Unfortunately, it'll still play like a frickin' console port.
@deathcow Why do you need to upgrade anything? Like every other potentially decent PC game in the last 5 years, it's being designed for Xbox and PS3. If you can run other recent FPS's, this should be no problem. I'm still running Core2Duo (oc'd) and a 5870 (also oc'd). I have another, still brand new 5870 sitting on a shelf that I just haven't been bothered to Crossfire yet. Haven't needed it (been sitting there for about two years; but maybe this weekend...). This is a corridor shooter. It has to be in order to run on consoles without choking. Even the outdoor areas are claustrophobic.
It's sad that there is so much emphasis on graphics over substance nowadays. It's the only thing game developers have left to convince PC gamers that they aren't selling the PC version short, even though it isn't the lead platform... better graphics, more graphic options, higher resolutions. I don't give a shit about "Pixel Accurate Displacement Mapping" or "Tessellated Vegetation", and if the game is worth playing as a GAME, you won't even notice it. Doom2 is still more fun today than any of the consolized dross released for PC in the last 6-8 years.

Xbox 360 and PS3 Are Just Very Crap PCs

ant says...

>> ^messenger:

I haven't played a console since SNES. What I liked about them then was that they always worked and never ever crashed. PCs still crash. Do consoles crash now? If not, that would be a significant advantage they have over PCs.

I haven't had owned a video game console since Atari 2600. I did borrow a Turbo Graphx 16 for about a week at my grand(ma/mother)'s house. I am more of a computer gamer with Texas Instrument (TI) 99/4A, Apple //c, IBM PCs, etc. Yes, computers crash a lot except for Apple //c and TI 99/4A since they were mostly the same like video game consoles.
