Skynex Air Defence System

moonsammy says...

"This is the current capability that is fielded under the name of Oerlikon Skynex, at the present point in time."

Now that's some fuckin' prose right there.

The Day Jesus Returns

Sagemind says...

Well, in the first few seconds, although this all sounds very poetic...

The moon does not "give light" it reflects light, so if there was an eclipse, then this would mean there would be no sun to reflect, so although partially true. these are both the same point.

And I can assure you the stars will not fall from the sky. You can tell this was written before we knew that stars were actually just distant suns. So written out of ignorance.

So this prophesy immediately looses credibility.

After that it just falls to creative writing all based on the natural occurrence of a solar eclipse. That's it. An eclipse. Someone in ancient times used a natural occurrence to evoke fear and sow seeds of of a story because people were uneducated and didn't know what it was.

Today we know what an eclipse is. We're educated, so why do people still fall for these stories. they're obviously written out of ignorance (unknowing) of what is now common knowledge.

@shinyblurry, I respect your personal religion. I endorse your need to believe in something to give you strength where you are weak. But educate yourself. Don't listen to this rhetoric and outdated nonsense. Be smart. I know you're an educated man. Don't hide behind this obvious and poorly written prose.
And definitely, don't sow this stuff to others. It just makes you look ignorant to educated people. You have a brain, and if you believe in a god, then you need to believe you were given a brain to use it. So do some thinking for yourself. You and your family will benefit from the use of a little intelligence.

I'm not saying you can't believe in your God. I'm just saying don't forsake intelligence. And if you can't engage in intelligent conversation, then don't preach using rhetoric created by people who where uneducated.

(EDIT: Sorry to be blunt. Sometimes we need blunt. I'm not trying to be mean. I've been learning that sometimes blunt is the only way to get through to stubborn people. I myself am stubborn - but smart enough to see, when pointed out, my errors in what I may think of this world - we are here to live and to learn, lets engage our brains).

I just wish they'd actually use Kiplings prose (minus the kinda racist bits).

His writing was fantastic and it's sad not to see it used.

@HugeJerk
did you hear that???
that was the point whooshing over your head.

so you reply to a comment about your semantics,
by using even more semantics and then engage in some impressive mental gymnastics.

ok man..i can accept when a horse is dead, and i am not interested in beating it any further.

voodoo was attempting to make an over-arcing point in regards to civil liberties and possible abuses.which is very similar to the point i was trying to make, but you are either unwilling or unable to acknowledge those possibilities.

while newt may disagree with mine and voodoos premise,at least he acknowledges the possibilities for abuse.

ah well,probably my failure.
i can muddy the waters of my own argument by my own ramblomatic self-destructive prose.

peace brother.

The Shannara Chronicles-First Look

enoch says...

@artician
i hear ya man,
but tolkien set the bar where all other fantasy writers had to follow.

personally i found the "the chronicles of thomas covenant-the unbeliever" to be perhaps the best fantasy series to take what tolkien did to a much greater depth and scope and incorporating much of what C.S lewis laid down.

what a great series.the protagonist is such an anti-hero and you struggle for three books to even like him, nevermind identify with him.

but like you,i sometimes struggle when a writers influence is so blatant.

take Dean Koontz...really...take him..
i find him to be an utter hack, and while his prose is readable, his storylines and ideas are so obviously plucked from better writers and then mashed together so we wont notice.

i notice...and thats why any book of his given to me has a permanent place on my bathroom shelves.that man is pure crapper reading, since i get to play "recognize the plot" without any real exertion ....mentally.

but let us be honest.
while tolkien created a very diverse and detailed land with lore and history.painting a picture in our heads this fantastic world he created.the basic plotline is not that original.

it is your basic heroes quest with an extremely detailed backdrop.

so i will give this show a pass, just as i did brooks books.they were engaging and entertaining, and at the end of the day...what more do we wish out of our books?

ever read any of piers anthony's xanth novels?
they are puntastic and a fun ride (even if a bit cheeky),and nowhere near great literature.

but fun...and i can live with that.

Jim Jefferies on gun control

lantern53 says...

He's funny. But naive.

When the gov't takes all the guns, only the gov't will have guns. I don't like that.

Sounds totally unfair. And don't tell me the politicians are giving up their guns. Those fuckers live by their own rules, while trying to lay other rules on the hoi polloi.

In 1927, a crazed mental killed 38 children at a school...with explosives.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_School_disaster

'Most people who force their way in only want your tv'...

well...not everyone!

Every day someone defends themselves from criminal attack with a 'protection gun'...there, see, I just renamed the assault weapon. At any rate...every firearm is an assault weapon. It doesn't fire posies.

As for slavery, Lincoln used GUNS to free the slaves. A soliloquy or well-crafted bit of prose wouldn't quite cut it.

So...the comedian depends on cops (armed with guns) to protect him.

ayn rand and her stories of rapey heroes

Babymech says...

Man, Nabokov's prose could punch the balls off of anything Dickens ever wrote. You're seriously gonna hold up the language of Dickens as a shining example? The guy who wrote such memorable purplitudes as:
"And in this particular period, the skiey influences seem to tincture the animal life with their own mysterious and wayward spirit of change. The birds desert their summer haunts; an unaccountable inquietude pervades the brute creation; even men in this unsettled season have considered themselves, more (than at others) stirred by the motion and whisperings of their genius. And every creature that flows upon the tide of the Universal Life of Things, feels upon the ruffled surface, the mighty and solemn change, which is at work within its depths."

Trancecoach said:

Rand was certainly not a great writer (as is often the case with those who write novels in a language that isn't native to them). As such, there's no comparison between Rand's use of English and say, Dickens' (but you could probably say that about Dickens and almost anyone else,...)

Disney's Maleficent - "Dream" Trailer

A10anis says...

For a moment I thought I'd had a reply from James Joyce. Very colourful prose my friend, though, sadly, you say little. The only sentence I can comment on is your last one; " To complain about what is and always will be is pointless." It is not only a totally false assertion but, also, a non-sequitur as nothing is "is" and "always." Everything is in flux and, as such, changes. This applies to all aspects of life, including entertainment.

poolcleaner said:

Life requires constant iteration, despite the human brain tiring of the process every step of the way. The ideas which are overdone are the mountains and the things not done enough are valleys and plains.

I think it's unavoidable as a pattern in all things, and potentially a requirement to advance past thought. Building up, building up, building up; like a levvy about to flood over and destroy the city so that it can be rebuilt with better ideas.

Don't fight the pattern, learn to manipulate it and iterate within the boundaries of society in a meaningful way. To complain about what is and always will be is pointless.

Shocking medical story

artician says...

You may want to stop listening, but for the sake of this woman's life, you need to stick it out and hear the whole thing. Even her little prose at the end.

The only reason that I can imagine she isn't on 60 minutes is if this somehow turns out to be fake, but my skepticism, for once, is pretty limited here.

I don't know why she is still alive after all of this. I am glad she is, even if just to bring us this story.

Yeah chaosengine I'd have to revisit a few posts to make any similar assessment as to your character. Admittedly, i do have a bit of trouble communicating without lapsing into prose.... learn to read between lines or simply get the gist and it won't upset you so much. What you think is yours to think and I resemble that remark. Thank You.

Look, I think the video itself is quite annoying because yes, I do feel it's a bit preachy.
but the message itself, is quite accurate.
And if it's so obvious, you won't mind stating why homosexuality is not normal.

I totally agree, the video IS "quite accurate," but I stand by my comment. Gays now -quite rightly - are protected by the law, have civil rights and will soon, hopefully, be allowed to marry. They worked hard for their rights, just as woman, and other persecuted minorities, did. My salient point, regarding the video, is that it preaches to the converted, will not change those bigots who will always hate, and that maybe it's time to enjoy their well earned rights and allow time to change the entrenched opinions of the minority. Sadly, going by the comments, ANY criticism of videos like this is tantamount to homophobia, which could NOT be further from the truth.

You are precisely who this video is addressing. YOU are the reason this video exists. YOU, who think that human rights are something "earned" by a minority, not inherent, bestowed upon the disenfranchised who should just feel grateful for the tolerance and generosity of the majority and kindly shut the fuck up about it. You just don't get it.
And THEN, after immortalizing your ignorance and arrogance in prose by releasing it into the ether, not to mention a worldview that likely extends no further than the windshield of your Prius, you refuse to clarify something that should be extremely easy to clarify for someone so enlightened. Yet, you dodge the question by dismissing the asker as incapable of understanding that which you have failed to explain as not worth your time, when, in fact, you are incapable of understanding the question in the first place, as already proven by your demonstrable inability to grasp the underlying issue/reality.
You aren't fooling anybody but yourself.

How you have managed to deduce from my comments that this video is aimed at me is, quite frankly, beyond ignorant. And if you don't think rights are fought for, you know nothing about history. Your notion of equality being a fundamental right is, though commendable, rather childish. In the real world, minorities fight hard to change attitudes and, as with homosexuality, are making good ground which is a credit to them. Now, try reading my comments again with a more objective view and you may, just, see them for support of gay rights and NOT a criticism of them. Sadly though, I doubt you have the ability to do so. I shall not respond again, as you have exhausted my patience.

Yeah, because that's what all our worlds rotate around isn't it? Your patience. Your replies are predictable and very formulaic. Trolls have followed the same blueprint since Compuserve was one of the "Big 3". Let's try something you can actually relate to...

Ya know what, probie? Your eulogising here has started to get tiresome. I mean, be happy that your ilk are allowed to post comments and all that, but do the rest of us have to have your opinions and ideals shoved down our throats just because you can? I mean, I'm happy for you and all... comment away! Seriously, it's something you are allowed to do, so I don't begrudge you that right at all. It's just that... do you have to be so goddamned flamboyant about it?
