30 tons of trash clog shoreline in Dominican Republic

nanrod says...

This is Playa Montesinos in downtown Santo Domingo. On Google Earth there is a cruise ship docked less than a kilometer from this beach. Apparently this happens after heavy rains which ties in with studies that show that 90-95% of all the plastic in the oceans comes from 10 rivers, 2 in Africa and 8 in Asia with China being the worst offender. It seems that as third world economies improve, their taste for western throwaway culture increases without a corresponding increase in disposal and recycling infrastructure. I've read somewhere that even where they have landfills they're often located near rivers where rains and floods flush the landfill and allow it to accept more trash.

Any information on this? Is this the result of illegal ocean dumping, a trash barge sinking, or just normal garbage filled runoff at this spot?
It's hardly the only island paradise overrun with plastic. This is what people do, nearly everywhere we go. We need a plague, yesterday.

Sarcastic Trump

oblio70 says...

I disagree with the "successful buisnessman" title being applied to Trump; however, had you used "successful player/playa", I would have no objection.

It still comes down to electing a crooked empire or an non PC successful businessman.

Kid has an extremely tough decision to make.

No, Avril, just...just stop...

Don't hate the playa, hate the game.

Here's one of my favorite Jonathan Richman, he writes simple likeable songs:

If you saw "There's Something About Mary" (which I never did) I read that Jonathan Richman played his guitar and sang, as a segue/commentary between the movie scenes.>> ^PlayhousePals:

¡Me gusta la canción! Reminds me of something Jonathan Richman would do.

I too liked the song [catchy] ... not familiar with Jonathan Richman ... will have to check him out, thanks =oD

Ice Cream Man ... delightful! The ditty that never ends [almost] I love how engaged the audience was. Don't know how he's slipped under my radar all of these years. Thanks for that link

Something About Mary is hilarious! [I love Ben Stiller] ... been quite sometime since I've seen it though. It deserves a revisit. =o)

Picard gets his 3 weeks

Fletch says...

How many Orion slave girls did Picard bed? Whether his own life, the lives of his crew, or the safety of his ship was on the line, Kirk always found time for love. If Kirk had been assimilated by the Borg, instead of Picard/Locutus, he would have had the Borg queen eating out of his hand, distracting her while his capable crew destroyed the Borg cube. Don't get me wrong, I loved TNG. Picard was brilliant, but Kirk was brilliant AND a playa. No contest.

... so many people, while they are cursing the hippies and typing on their Macbooks, should really get a clue...

Dude. ANYone could see gwiz665 was joking.

cool i guess i missed the joke. even here in Reno, 2 hours away from the playa, the perception that it is just a bunch of hippies in the desert still dominates. Even fox news uses burning man references as a way to encourage a negative perception of OWS people.
but don't let me missing the joke detract from the rest of the post.
i'm not sure any of us realize the extent of the importance of encouraging creative thinking and cooperation.

Geez you hippies are touchy.

Just awesome vid. Any railing against 'those damn hippies' is killed by the wondrous words of the Doctor.

It's easy to think that people there are pretentious wankers, but then you look at the structures, the sculpture, the engineering, the art. And you have to go... 'woah'. They made those things, they created, and for a brief time they get to exist in a little world of creativity and sharing.

So yeah. Great stuff.

I noted that there is an Australian Burning Man now (Burning Seed), but it looks like it gets held in bushland. I think the playa of Burning Man, the huge, flat surface is a huge part of what makes it. So I'm not sure why they don't hold the Australian ones in one of our deserts.
