The 'unclimbable' hill is finally defeated

newtboy says...

They need to invite some Formula Off road guys next time.
Vikings really know how to fly a car up a vertical hill. In fact, they're driving skills are so godlike, they can drive on water.

Lucas di Grassi on how quickly Formula E has evolved

newtboy says...

You would like formula off-road, Icelandic off road racing. Those cars have no electronics, just 800 HP motors, industrial gearboxes, and military axles tied together with steel tubing. The things they can do with that minimalism are astonishing.

This is all fine, why not. IMHO Formula 1 is basically approaching this from the other shore most of the time.

Racing cars used to be about adrenalin, taming a beast, surviving unlikely odds and so on, an adventure for gentlemen.

In the last 40 years it has become a competition in pushing buttons, mostly.

If racing cars can have ABS, automatic gearboxes, power steering and all, why not an electric motor?

I still think it is sad and I am glad I saw F1 in the 70s.

I want to see a Willie's Overland Jeep electric version...full torque at 0 mph is perfect for off-road, and I always like old school aesthetics.

This is part of why I would love to see Tesla partner up with another car company and make the electric version.

Subaru Impreza STI-E, please.

I give you the rare upvote / *ban .
While this looks beautiful and fun, it's a clear self link.
I wish I could have gone out with them when I was there, but that was summer, and I think they can only go off road like this in winter.

You can do it, Lars!

When I raced off road buggies, my mantra was "If you're not bleeding, you're not really trying".
So much pain...so much fun.

As the old saying goes “if you’re not hospitalised, you’re not trying”

Or something like that... I dunno, I’ve hit my head a lot

Range Rover Evoque Stunt – Speed Bump

newtboy says...

Ridiculous. At that 45 degree angle, any of those street cars could have gotten over it just as easily. I've driven over much worse in a civic.
My jeep or bronco could do it straight on, or at that same angle without ever lifting a wheel. Imo, this was just dumb to anyone that drives off-road and just showed what pure on road cars range rovers are.

That's How A Real Driver Backs Up His Trailer!

There are drones that can automatically follow you. I have a friend that has one that he uses to record himself off-roading. You tell it what to lock on to, and it tracks that object.

So... is he flying a drone while he backs in?

Mars Curiosity: 5 Year Timelapse

YIKES!

newtboy says...

I never knew they did off road train rides.

The scary part to me is "Maintenance was deferred for decades", especially when I consider how many bridges have had maintenance deferred for much longer.
