What Happens in Russia When a Cyclist Crosses the Street

Drawing a love symbol in the sky with a machine gun

chingalera says...

..some desert-dwelling snake, bird, or bug maybe-Doubt anyone that deft with a Kalashnikov would choose a trajectory over a populated area.

That's nice, but someone loved will be shot by falling bullets.

The largest caliber rifle ever produced. .905 caliber

00Scud00 says...

Looking at it strictly from a caliber standpoint I would have to agree that it's a bit of a head scratcher, a .22 caliber Kalashnikov, oooh scary. But the restriction does make perfect sense from a size perspective as .50 cal BMG's, while scary looking, are not all that popular with the criminal element as lugging that monster round is bound to draw the wrong kind of attention.

Buck said:

I was telling a coworker today that here in Canada we can own A .50 Cal BMG for about $10,000. We don't need to register it at all with anyone, only need a basic non restricted lic. to own. and can shoot it wherever legal shooting is allowed in the countryside.

Same time, a gun that shoots .22 long rifle, one of the (if not the) smallest cal. used, usually for target shooting or squirls, small bullet. If the .22 LOOKS like...yes LOOKS like an AK47 it's Prohibeted to own. If it LOOKS like an AR15 .223 (smallish bullet still) it's treated like a handgun, special lic. register it only the range not in country, no hunting with it etc.

so ya I can own a gun that'd shoot through an engine block and not have anyone know about it but can't have a .22lr tin can plinker if it LOOKS like a scary AK.....serious logic fail.

I have never seen a gun as big as this one, wow.

QI - The Sturmgewehr

chicchorea says...

Someone knows their firearms.
If I may offer and WADR, the Krummlauf option was offered for the MG42 and the STG44 with the "I"(as was correctly stated by radx) used by the infantry and a "P"(Panzer) variant for tanks. Barrels were issued in 30, 45, 60, and 90 degree curves. The 30 was quite accurate, under 1.5 MOA, and all practically accurate. Barrel life was limited, as already stated, with the 30 degree barrels rated roughly at 300 rds and the 45 degree at approximately 160 rds. I have seen one fired and a couple on film. Truly an influential design. Kalashnikov borrowed the gas system for the AK for instance.

[Geek]You know where the need for this modification supposedly arose?
Tanks designed without means for CQC/infantry suppression, particularly the Elephant, a heavy tank destroyer based on spare parts of the Porsche Tiger after Henschel's design was chosen. Great armor, immense firepower, piss-poor mobility - and no MG. So they developed the "Maschinenpistolen-Vorsatz P": a weapon system to be fitted on the StG44 which allowed the crew to cover blind spots from within the tank. It consists of a barrel bent 90 degrees, a periscope, an adapter and a hull mounting.
"Vorsatz I" (or J, can't remember) used a barrel bent at 30 degrees and was supposed to be used from within open-topped APCs as well as in urban combat, though it took about a minute to put it onto your rifle and the barrel was useless after 150-300 rounds. I imagine the 45 degree version was to be used in the same manner.
Rheinmetall still have some in their collection.[/geek]

Tom Waits -- Road To Peace

Ornthoron says...

Young Abdel Mahdi (Shahmay) was only 18 years old,
He was the youngest of nine children, never spent a night away from home.
And his mother held his photograph, opening the New York Times
To see the killing has intensified along the road to peace

There was a tall, thin boy with a whispy moustache disguised as an orthodox Jew
On a crowded bus in Jerusalem, some had survived World War Two
And the thunderous explosion blew out windows 200 yards away
With more retribution and seventeen dead along the road to peace

Now at King George Ave and Jaffa Road passengers boarded bus 14a
In the aisle next to the driver Abdel Mahdi (Shahmay)
And the last thing that he said on earth is "God is great and God is good"
And he blew them all to kingdom come upon the road to peace

Now in response to this another kiss of death was visited upon
Yasser Taha, Israel says is an Hamas senior militant
And Israel sent four choppers in, flames engulfed, tears wide open
And it killed his wife and his three year old child leaving only blackened skeletons

It's found his toddlers bottle and a pair of small shoes and they waved them in front of the cameras
But Israel says they did not know that his wife and child were in the car
There are roadblocks everywhere and only suffering on TV
Neither side will ever give up their smallest right along the road to peace

Israel launched it's latest campaign against Hamas on Tuesday
Two days later Hamas shot back and killed five Israeli soldiers
So thousands dead and wounded on both sides most of them middle eastern civilians
They fill the children full of hate to fight an old man's war and die upon the road to peace

"And this is our land we will fight with all our force" say the Palastinians and the Jews
Each side will cut off the hand of anyone who tries to stop the resistance
If the right eye offends thee then you must pluck it out
And Mahmoud Abbas said Sharon had been lost out along the road to peace

Once Kissinger said "we have no friends, America only has interests"
Now our president wants to be seen as a hero and he's hungry for re-election
But Bush is reluctant to risk his future in the fear of his political failures
So he plays chess at his desk and poses for the press 10,000 miles from the road to peace

In the video that they found at the home of Abdel Mahdi (Shahmay)
He held a Kalashnikov rifle and he spoke with a voice like a boy
He was an excellent student, he studied so hard, it was as if he had a future
He told his mother that he had a test that day out along the road to peace

The fundamentalist killing on both sides is standing in the path of peace
But tell me why are we arming the Israeli army with guns and tanks and bullets?
And if God is great and God is good why can't he change the hearts of men?
Well maybe God himself is lost and needs help
Maybe God himself he needs all of our help
Maybe God himself is lost and needs help
He's out upon the road to peace

Well maybe God himself is lost and needs help
Maybe God himself he needs all of our help
And he's lost upon the road to peace
And he's lost upon the road to peace
Out upon the road to peace.

16 year old Canadian Terror Suspect Interrogated at Gitmo

Pprt says...

^If you're being mugged and you really, really don't like it and concentrate on channeling that emotion to the mugger, do think think he'll just turn around and hand back your wallet?

Of course not.

Sometimes... no matter how much you want something, it won't materialize. You can't reason with everyone for the simple reason that not everyone shares the same intellectual drive.

Go tell some priapic Sudanese Kalashnikov wielding maniac that he should treat his enemy with respect because some gentlemen met in Switzerland and laid down some ground rules. He'll laugh in your face, and with good reason!

If you partake in a gentleman's duel and you're well aware that your opponent has a nasty habit of shooting people in the back, would you still begin your ten paces with assurance?

Only a fool would insist on being a gentleman when dealing with swine.

Machine Gun Camp for Kids

uhohzombies says...

The scary thing is there are summer camps kind of like this. When I was 7 or 8, I went to the John Birch Society summer camp in North Carolina, which is kind of amusing considering I turned out agnostic and slightly left of center. In case you don't know what JBS is, they're very libertarian/right and religious. There were bible studies and prayer meetings almost every day along with extremely pro-America radically patriotic sessions talking about how the country needs to go back to Revolutionary War ideals. Every other day or so we'd go out to shooting ranges too and fire everything from small caliber handguns to fully automatic assault rifles.

I was 7 years old and I vividly recall firing a .22 Luger handgun, .22 bolt-action rifle, 9mm handgun, .45, and a semi-automatic Kalashnikov. It was a lot like what they show in this video here. They'd even prompt us by saying "Imagine it's Castro out there!" or some other leftist figure from history.

I only went for one summer. I actually quite enjoyed learning how to properly and safely use a firearm and some of the principles of 2nd amendment protections and SAFETY with guns has stuck with me. The rest was far too radical for me, it was like a survivalist militia training camp.

Weapons of US soldiers in Iraq 'plagued with problems'

AeroMechanical says...

I don't recall exactly, and I haven't time to find a source but I believe he may really have a grudge. I recall that it was a fella working at Colt (presumably this guy) who designed the rifle, but the company lost interest when it seemed like the Army didn't want it, and sold the design off to another company (Armalite, I believe). At any rate, it was a little scandalous because it ended up as a gigantic contract.

I'll post an edit if I find a source. Sorry for all the vaguery.

I'm not a soldier, but I've heard from various friends that thought the M-16 was a fine rifle. They said the Kalashnikov is great for soldiers with no training, no cleaning kits and poorly manufactured ammunition, but they would rather have an M-16. I have fired both on a range and I preferred the M-16- it was more comfortable to use.

More Guns Less Violence? Come On are they serious?

krumzy says...

If every man has a gun in his glove box, chances are he is going to use it. Im not against guns, as far as im concerned the Kalashnikov belongs in a museum right next to any other piece of history, but there is no reason for the common man to carry a gun in a civilized society. The original reason for the right to bare arms was to overthrow a government that gains too much power. Seeing as today the majority decides how the state should be run (at least in theory) there really is no need for guns, and seeing that if they were to be used to overthrow a tyrannical government (and most likely install another tyranny) the last four years have given plenty of opportunity to do so.

I can't really understand how people can support allowing anyone to own a gun (maybe it has something to do with the gun-phallic symbol connection). I play airsoft and understand the thrill of firing a gun, but the issue of safety for the community really outweighs everything else. Even with the strictest regulations the people who shouldnt have a gun ( and there are alot of them out there) can get ahold of a gun, and that risk outweighs the rights on the individual. Plain and simple.

Largest illegal black market of guns in pakistan

Krupo says...

Reminds me of what you could see on Canal Street in NYC, except they had rather many more knock-off Coach and Prada handbags than Kalashnikov rifles. And no hills.

"Zindabad", eh? Cool phrase to know.

Great find randeep - this should go straight up onto the top 15 if people are paying attention!

Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan raid Taliban stronghold

NordlichReiter says...

Watch closer, i saw an M4, the M16 M203 grenade launcher, and my mistake on the M249 it looked like a G3a3 with the way the camera cut the handle seemed to be part of the scope. Ok no scar either my mistake on both, their version of the M16 sounds a lot more dangerous than the U.S. version. I would rather see the Canadian variant in U.S. use because the M16 is not the most faithful of weapons. Now the SAW thats a good weapon, first called the mini, commonly confused with the Gatling gun, put into use in Vietnam but not noted do to the M60s prowess.

Personally they need to switch over to Kalashnikov's, now thats a very durable cheap weapon.

Sorry i made a mistake, but those boys did a helluva job.
