The National Missile Defence System projected costs for the years 2004 to 2009 will be $53 billion, making it the largest single line in The Pentagon's budget. Both Iran and North Korea are not close to having long range ICMBs to reach the continental United States, Iran can't strike it's hated Enemy Israel, its unknown fully if North Korea even detonated a nuclear weapon let alone possess missles that could hit North American targets. but really: the Patriot missle system has been proven not to work very well, larger warhead missles now have some clever counter measures, and im pretty sure if any country was going to Nuke the states, they would be so bold as to use missiles, im pretty sure it'd be some crappy RC airplane launched from some guys boat and flown in by remote and detonated. unless it was by china. Bubba wasn't half as excited as this each time terrorists attacked us during the 90s. The only time he "fought back" was lobbing some missles at Iraq the first day of his well-deserved impeachment trial. You should never lie under oath.

It may be obvious, but that's a demonstration of the airplanes anti-aircraft defense system. The flares act to fool oncoming heat seeking missles. But probably the DoD is paying outlandish sums for custom spec'd flares.
