Honey Badger Rescues Her Baby from Leopard

SFOGuy says...

perhaps change in title: Leopard stupidly provokes honey badger maternal instinct.

Although, I would say that baby honey badger is still in a world of hurt and might not make it.

Raising large unrelated animals so that we can eat their maternal secretions is a pretty crazy form of ancient technology. She might get right over it and see the vegan light.

Aliens: The Ride - Planet Coaster Dark Ride

testlump says...

Plug this in to a VR headset and a pneumatic chair and you'd be in for a hell of a ride.

Also, how great was the sound design in Aliens 1, 2 (SE) and 3 (Assembly Cut Obvs)? The maternal self destruct voice from the first movie never gets old.

Mother - Amanda Palmer and Jherek Bischoff

moonsammy says...

I'm a significant fan of The Wall, and certainly dig Amanda Palmer (though much more casually), but I'm pretty confused by this. The lyrics discuss an overly controlling and fear-propagating mother, while the images are largely implying a freeing, uplifting maternal force. But what appears to be the central character representing that maternal force is also saying the controlling mother's lines, while the central character of the malignant / controlling force is literally suckling at her tit. Well-made and gripping certainly, and I like the cover, but the message seems jumbled.

What Pixar Animators Do In Their Spare Time

artician says...

I appreciate that this was voiced. So many of their shorts are silent, but just the small amount of voicework takes it so much further.

I had a problem with the hands in this one (I know; I'm critical of everything). But this was beautiful. Nice, raw emotion. Kind of heavy.

Even though I understand it was their focus, kinda sick of maternal-exclusion.

Pig vs Cookie

transmorpher says...

You're right, they often get either just the flavor or just the texture, but not often both at the same when it comes to mock foods. Although it seems like every other week a new company is coming up with products that get closer and closer to real thing. Gardein "chicken" tenders for example. I actually find they taste better than the real ones(yeah I didn't think it was possible for chicken to taste any better either!) And hey no cholesterol

I don't see it as a sacrifice, not when I'm the one reaping all of the benefits. The knowledge that I haven't doomed a sweet piggy like the one in the video to stand in a 2x3 foot cage until it collapses is more satisfying than the flavor of the best bacon . Not to mention health benefits, environmental (and some asshat farmer gets less money too is pretty satisfying too haha)

Lions in a cage most certainly wouldn't eat you. They would attack you and kill you out of fear and protection of their territory, perhaps even out of the fun of it, being feline. Assuming they were well fed of course which most animals in captivity are. But they would not bother wasting the energy to eat you when they are fed much tastier and healthier food.
There are also plenty of documented cases were a lions maternal instincts take over and they protect an infant animal. such as this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRUXU172vGg (there is a similar few where leopards save monkeys by returning them to trees etc)
It goes to show that even carnivores with strong killer instincts are able to see compassion, and that they only kill out of necessity to survive. When survival isn't factor anymore the rules are completely different.

Sorry, I've tasted vegetarian bacon and it simply doesn't measure up. Even the seitan fake bacon, which is close, lacks the proper crispness and flavor.

I fully support anyone's choice to make the sacrifice to their lifestyle by skipping animal products, but even the best fake meat alternatives do not completely measure up to the real ones in taste and texture.

Everything dies and, outside of the 'civilized' food chain, most every creature dies from old age or by being eaten (sometimes while still alive). If I were to go into a cage full of lions, I don't think they would have a crisis of conscience over my level of sentience in deciding whether or not to eat me.

Is Poverty Necessary?

BicycleRepairMan says...

Actually, it probably wont.. All the stats point in the same direction: reducing childhood/maternal mortality, eradicating poverty and educating people seems to have an interesting side effect: People have less kids. Typically a poor, uneducated population with 10-15% child mortality theres 5-6 kids per woman, whilst rich, educated populations CM less thand 0.2% or so, 1-2 kids per woman. So the population growth slow down or stops as countries move from developing to developed.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Paid Family Leave

SDGundamX says...

In Japan, my wife got 12 months maternity at 2/3 salary. Legally, companies are required to provide 6 weeks pre-birth leave and 8 weeks after-birth leave (paid for by National Insurance). Technically according to the law both she and I can ask for up to 2 years off (at reduced pay) but that never happens--people are too scared of losing their jobs. You can't be fired for taking childcare leave but you can be transferred to a new position and most people are afraid of being delegated to a position that has no further room for career advancement (or requires a ton of menial tasks).

I was simply trying to point out that we all pay for stuff we don't use. I obviously didn't communicate that well.

I do think you might be missing the point of paid maternity leave, though. It is not (in the country at least) to encourage population growth. It is to improve the family situations of those who have kids.

While it's true that childbearing is usually a choice, and that people ought to save money or wait until they are financially secure, the fact is that this just doesn't always happen. There's a parallel argument for public pensions, which would not be necessary if people would just put aside 20% of their paychecks every year.

Given that people are going to have kids, and that they aren't always going to be financially secure, the question is: is there a material or moral benefit in giving those families more time to nurture their children and more time to bond without the stress of trying to navigate financial hardship? What is that worth to society in dollar term?

I don't claim to be smart enough to know the answer.

sirex said:

Well firstly you're making an appeal to extremes which is besides the point, and secondly cancer or unemployment aren't (or at least shouldn't be in the case of unemployment) a choice

...

People are having kids just dandy, so no, i don't think really any paid time off is a particularly good idea.

The most obvious solution would probably be to cut jobs. It vastly reduces your loss of income during maternity leave if you don't have any to begin with...

Using your numbers, I'll ask you, why should an employer be allowed to pay an employee $33 a day for full time work? (this issue only covers full time employees)

Now I'll answer YOUR question...employers and the fed should pay for at least that much time off because it's been proven that spending that time statistically reduces the time they'll have to take off caring for that child later, saving work time, child illness, AND healthcare money. It's short sighted VS long term thinking. If you only count today and never consider tomorrow, maternity leave is money wasted...if you DO look at tomorrow, it's an incredibly good investment in uncountable ways.

Why should an employer give you $1500 to 5 grand to take off 45 days?
If I were in an accident or such should I get such a paid vacation?

Americans are already paying for paid maternity time off but its not for average Americans.

President Obama signed a presidential memorandum ordering agencies to give federal workers six weeks of paid leave to care for a new child or take care of ill family members.

Canada gets 6 months paid maternity leave and 6 months parental leave. The last one can be taken by the either person. Moms can take a year off, or both parents can take 6 months off at the same time, or trade off after the first 6.
