The Most Disturbing Painting

newtboy says...

Noooooo! Travesty.
Watch it.
So good....so very good. A totally different horror movie that's not just another rewrite of a classic, even though it starts out like every other teenage sex romp/horror movie, but then......no spoilers, just watch it. Hilarious and scary.
Side note, keep an eye out for a Reaver in the mayhem... Easter egg.

Yeah, I assumed that was the case, but I've never seen the movie.

Man saws his AR15 in half in support of gun control

Ickster says...

What was important in this video was seeing someone doing some hard thinking, and making a decision that goes against a big part of his identity because he decided it was the right thing to do.

That's such a hard thing for a person to do, and it happens really rarely. I just watched someone change themselves for the better, and the first comment is a dipshit mocking him.

Restored 1967 Footage Of Saturn V Space Rocket Launch

ChaosEngine says...

How amazing and beautiful is that?

Not just on a surface level, although the sheer spectacle is still wondrous to behold.

But the *engineering behind it, the ambition, the unbelievable cajones on the three guys sitting atop a giant missile, the co-operation of basically an entire nation working to build something to advance the frontiers of humanity.... damn, I get teary-eyed just watching it.

Even if the motivations were ultimately political (beating those pesky reds!), sometimes we can still do the right thing for the wrong reasons.

*doublepromote one of mankind's finest hours.

channel 4 trainwreck interview with jordan peterson

"Let me just get this straight, your saying that we should organize our society along the lines of the lobster"

NOPE, NOPE, I can't do it anymore... I stuck it out until 27:13 but that moronic question puts it over the top.

So let me get this straight Mrs. Interviewer, you have no concept of the scientific method and just want to push your ideals and emotions on this guy (write or wrong that he may be)?

I should have just watched the fireplace channel for half an hour... I certainly would have come out smarter after this show of abysmal "journalism".

Alex Jones Says Star Wars Is 'State-Funded' Propaganda

notarobot says...

Do I have to watch it? This vid, I mean?

Star Wars is about rebels fighting a powerful empire that governs the galaxy. It glorifies taking down the establishment by a group of (well funded) gun-toting terrorists.

I suppose you could draw a parallel to the American war of independence against the British...

But in a modern context this would be like a group of domestic insurgents blowing up an aircraft carrier ("Death Star") while staging an armed rebellion against the US government (now a subsidiarity of "Gov-co," a joint venture of the Disney, Viacom, Lockheed Martin, JP Morgan Chase, and Koch Bros. companies).

Simply put, that's just not going to happen.

edit: Okay I just watched the above clip. That guy made even less sense than the BS that I just made up.

Police K9 attacks innocent woman dumping her garbage

bcglorf says...

Did we watch the same video?

The officer's weren't 'just watching her get mauled and restraining her from defending herself', two of the officers were trying to pull her away from the dog and the third officer was trying to pull the dog off. If I was unlucky enough to get bitten, I'm not sure what more I'd want to officers to do. About the only faster way out is shooting the dog which is admittedly risky when it's still chewing on your arm.

newtboy said:

Reverse the situation, the dog would definitely be dead and the owner charged with assault on a police officer if not shot.

Saying "You're fine, you're fine" while just watching her be mauled and even restraining her from defending herself is in no way acceptable. They need to suspend their k9 unit immediately, it's not safe or under control.

Just watching him struggle through made me feel sick.

I cannot fathom why a man with all the money in the world, who can afford food that's not only tasty but is good for you, would ever eat that crap on a dare, much less choose it as their normal meal. WTF?!?

Is It Dangerous To Talk To A Camera While Driving?

MilkmanDan says...

Was just watching the old Mythbusters where they took an actual driving road test while intoxicated or talking on a cell phone. But, being actual driving, they legally had to stay under the .08 BAC limit even though it was on a closed course.

Really cool to see this place, where they can test things at mild/moderate/high levels of impairment, other types of intoxication, etc.

However, I did have one minor complaint, sort of the same as in the Mythbusters episode: it would be nice to see additional tests where the driver isn't ever expected to look at a video camera and/or respond correctly to questions. Ie., what if you're talking to somebody on the phone hands free, or talking to a passenger in the car, but you're not expected to devote a lot of attention to that ALL the time. In a real scenario, you can keep your eyes on the road and pay attention to driving while also listening to someone or even talking to them a little bit. If you see something in the road that requires your full attention, it seems like your brain should be able to do a reasonable job of prioritizing the driving (more important) over paying attention to the conversation (less important).

I'd wager that on average, people in that sort of scenario are slightly impaired compared to drivers putting 100% of their attention on driving, but not by a big margin. Probably lower than a lot of other distractions, some of which we deem acceptable (hard to legislate things like "driving while preoccupied" angry/sad/whatever).

Why The Cops Won't Help You When You're Getting Stabbed

newtboy says...

Um...this ended his 28 hour long stabbing spree, the reason the cops were there and why they recognized him.....sounds like "something stupid"and illegal to me, as did pulling the knife and stabbing people right in front of them, which they continued to just watch until citizens detained and disarmed him, and only then did they take him away, ignoring the mortal wounds he caused to those citizens, so they were not correct at all, he was a known armed public threat that they didn't even warn others about, they just cowered behind the door out of fear of a non existent gun, then offered no assistance to the man that just did their job....and took credit for it....sorry.
I think you need to watch again, assuming you watched at all, you missed literally everything.

bigbikeman said:

Ok, so....

Cops should just jump on people they think *might* commit a crime because: Reasons .

Good call, citizens!

Due process. Due fucking process.
It exists for reasons beyond your cynical worldview...or even worst case scenarios. It exists to protect the rest of us. The majority.

The cops were right there to take the guy away once he did something stupid. They were also "correct" in not doing anything beforehand. Right before he pulled a knife and stabbed someone, he was just being an asshole, nothing more. That's not illegal. Sorry.

and no: you don't want the police "protecting" you. That's what the Mafia does.

So what's the alternative? Preemptive police takedowns? That happens too, and people scream all the same.

Difference is: I'd rather live in a free society where cops wait for somebody (maybe me) to actually do something wrong, than just leave it up to them to decide when you (or I) *might* be a risk, and then taze or shoot you or me dead.

The police are not there to keep you safe. For one, there is no such thing as "safe" in absolute terms, and in my opinion, if there was, you sure as shit don't want the state prescribing that "safety".

But...that's just my opinion.
