This is a silly conversation. There just aren't that many NSFW thumbnails, as @Sarzy said.

The jousting vid is a perfect example of how "discuss" works just fine. That stingray wanted to stay out of a perceived controversy, that was up to him. We had some private conversations and it was clear to me he was just fine with how it played out. It was just a vid to him, something fun, and he chose to kill it.

Just use common sense. The community will sort it out.

I understand that there is some fear that the politically correct police will make life miserable. But really -- apply some common sense. If someone is really touchy and is constantly drawing vids out of rotation because of a perceived NSFW, the community will make it clear that that person should hide the thumbnails and leave everyone's vids alone. The sift is really really REALLY good at shaming, blaming and making an individual's life hell, especially a sensitive individual. They will stop. Or leave the Sift.

The other side of that is someone who consciously and constantly posts vids that he (believe me, it would be a he) knows cross the line. Same thing will happen -- although wouldn't that person chance being banned for pornography, if it was a constant barrage?

Anyway, residue posted this question and has solved it for himself.

Personally, I plan on using the "discuss" tactic -- sparingly, sparingly, don't worry, I have no interest in censorship, just common sense.

The title was deliberately over the top. The word doesn't carry as much weight outside of the US as it does there, and it was deliberately chosen to cause as much outrage as possible (but not this kind of outrage). Lann did want me to call it "Cooter punching", but I said fuck that and went all out. I'm sorry that you felt particularly hurt by it, it was a joke.

The description is also a joke of course - I have a persona to maintain, and boy do I maintain it. I do think you have a thin skin, and I'm sympathetic - I really am, but I think you should say your piece in the comment of the video "I really don't like this and this is why (...)" or, if it's title and description you have a problem with, you could speak directly with the poster in private PMs. In this case moi.

Regarding the video larsarus posted, I don't like it either. I love my nordic brother (or you know, as much as you can love a Swede.. ), but that video was a lot worse than the one I posted, in my view, because it seems like the girl isn't in on the joke. So that's a whole other level of abuse/violence.

I'm not sure I even saw the thumbnail of the boob video before I promoted it, so I didn't troll you with that deliberately. It wasn't even aimed at you, it was aimed at the many white knights who said "it's never, ever, ever OK that a women is hurt by anything" (I wanted to say violence, but really it's too harsh of a word for what happened in the jousting video).

I'll end with this. I'm sorry that you felt so bad about the incidents. I'm sorry that the other people who decried the stuff felt bad. The title/description was over the top by design, so it was bound that some people would be pissed about it - I'm OK with that - that was the joke. It'll probably happen again some time, maybe not by me, but maybe by me. By then I hope you'll take it for what it is, or at least have built up more of a resistance to it. Or hell, just grab me by the collar in a PM and say what's on your mind.

In your opinion. In my opinion. In somebody else's opinion.

The community will sort it out. We have a tool for dealing with perceived problems. We have lots of brainpower (and time to waste) -- we don't need software to deal with this.

The entire situation you described with the jousting video (controversy, video killing) could have been potentially avoided had members likely to take offense at such things been using a filter to remove the thumb

You can also pull a vid into discuss so the thumbnail disappears from general view and it can be changed.

Here is the vid mentioned above -- the poster was happy to change the thumbnail when asked politely (unfortunately he subsequently killed the vid -- the vid was drawn into a controversy and the poster wanted OUT of that noise. Can't blame him.)

The original thumbnail was a perfect bewb shot -- torso only. It was clearly a naked woman even if you were 20 feet away. Other than its obvious allure, it was also boring and static and story-free.

The new thumbnail is so much more enticing, I think. There is even side bewb. Side bewb is good, right? It would draw in the same crowd as would have been intrigued by the original thumbnail, without causing folks at work to do some convoluted dance and have to remember to change their settings back and forth, and log in and out.

I don't think we need to do anything other than use an existing tool -- discuss -- and the community will sort it out. Doesn't need programming, doesn't need Sifters tying themselves up into pretzels to save the sensibilities of some of the touchier people around here. That would be you, @blankfist. Toughen up, honey. It's just a thumbnail.

Well the issue was that a couple days ago someone promoted the topless joust video so everytime you loaded the page, there was the topless thumbnail proudly displayed right at the top. That was an issue for me and I had to completely avoid the sift for the day at work (not a big deal, but a resolvable problem for that and future situations). There are lots of times at work when I want to show a colleague something that's on the sift and you're right, most of the time it's perfectly fine. What I'd like to create a situations where it's ALWAYS fine.

If it's a huge amount of work, which lucky has alluded to, then you're right it's not worth it. Just a suggestion

In the rare, rare case that you see a boobie or a wiener or some other NSFW bit of skin in a thumbnail, just scroll past it. The thumbnails aren't exactly huge -- unless your boss or a coworker is standing right over your shoulder while you browse the sift (in which case it's your own fault if you get caught looking at something inappropriate), no one will notice.

I actually downvoted the jousting vid out of my own disgust that they weren't both topless. If I had known that upvoting it would've enraged somebody, I would've douplepromote quality'd that mofo.

I thought about it for a while, and removed it because the video doesn't mean anything to me. It's just a dumb video I found and submitted it to notch up my star points and nothing more. The video also represents a catalyst for causing a ton of controversy on the sift, and I don't really want to be caught up in it.
