District 9 - The Aliens Arrive

cybrbeast says...

So there was a spaceship hovering over Johannesburg for 20 years and no nation has even tried to deconstruct or even claim it? You'd think that the US and the Soviet Union would be the first to jump at the chance of an extraterrestrial technology advantage and would go to great lengths to get it, regardless if it had landed in either territory or not.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. -Arthur C. Clarke

In the movie you already see that they have no idea how to reverse engineer the alien weapons, even though they've been trying for 20 years. My guess would be that they must have tried the same with the spaceship but also failed. They might have removed interesting bits and just let the rest of the ship hang. They also wouldn't want to break the engines because it would come crashing down on Johannesburg.

Imagine the humans of 1930 (the electron microscope was discovered in 1931) getting their hands on an iPhone. They wouldn't know what to do with it. They wouldn't even be able to see the actual circuits let alone know how they worked. It would be a long time before they could actually discover and use anything of use out of an iPhone.

Role Reversal in Soweto, South Africa

Cars suck, public transport rules, it's obvious

acl123 says...

woh I've never seen so many terrible arguments on Videosift before.

Fact is, cars make the world an uncomfortable and smelly place.

Driving a car to avoid the uncomfortable smelly bus (or avoid doing a bit of exercise) is pure lazy selfishness.

Get your head kicked in on the bus?? Maybe if you lived in Johannesburg... but really your kidding me right. It's mostly old ladies and 12 years old.

Yes some city's have terrible public transport systems, but that's no argument. Vote for local government that will make a change. Take a stand against dumb bosses and dumb supermarkets and adjust your lifestyle. You'd be surprised how easy it is no matter where you live.

Have these Crackers even been to Africa? - Toto

In answer to your question. From the band's website:

In late 1997, the band toured South Africa for the first time, eventually joining a South African choir and drum team to perform “Africa” in Johannesburg.

In 1998, Lukather and Paich put the finishing touches on TOTO XX, including the fabled “Africa” track from Johannesburg, and it was released in May, after which it rapidly climbed the European and Japanese charts.

Alive In Joburg

deputydog says...

'Alive in Joburg is a science fiction short film directed by Neill Blomkamp, released in 2005 by Spy Films. It runs approximately six minutes long and was filmed in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is noted for its visual effects as well as its documentary-style imagery.'

Blomkamp is the guy now doing the Halo film btw, and he's still only 27.
