The Raid Director Gareth Evans Lists His Top 5 Action Scenes

ChaosEngine says...

It sounds like the ultimate hipster doucheism, but really Jackie Chans Hong Kong movies are just so much better than his western stuff. Police Story is just so funny, it really showcases Chans comedic timing.

If you haven't seen it, you're really missing out. It's worth it for the scene where he has to answer 5 phones at once alone.

Also similiar to that last scene is the last fight in Fearless between Jet Li and Shido Nakamura (or at least his stunt double)

The Raid 2: Berandal (Indonesian Trailer)

9547bis says...

Try Merantau, the first Uwai/Evans project, it's sort of "Ong Bak Done Right" (still simple yet better story, better acting, waaayyy better directing).

Iko Uwais / Gareth Evans could be the best thing in action movies since Jet Li / Tsui Hark. I really hope Berandal, as their biggest project to date, does work and proves they have the acting/directing chops for that.

The Raid is the only foreign language movie I've watched more than once in the last decade.

I concur with you assessments of the movies I mentioned and welcome your recommendations with great anticipation. In fact, I intend to search out copies this weekend. Thank you again.

I am unfamiliar with the two films mentioned and look forward to seeing then. He has done some of the most beautiful films. Curse of the Golden Flower and House of Flying Daggers are stunning.

If you were looking for things similar to "Curse of the Golden Flower" in the 3 movies I named, then you'll probably be disappointed as they are very different. To me, Zhang Yi Mou is much better at depicting characters than big fighting scenes (though I think his direction of the Beijing Olympic opening was awesome).
"House of the flying dagger" and "Curse of the golden flower" were just too superficial for my taste. Sure they have pretty pictures and actors, but they lack the essence of humanity that's present in his other movies.
Another one of my favorite movies of his: "No one less" is terribly slow and uneventful from the first glance, but at a certain moment in the movie, the viewer couldn't help but to feel the raw emotional connection with one of the main characters, and I literally couldn't hold back my tears. It's the only moment in the movie that makes you feel that way, and it only last a few seconds... but it's all worthy.

This movie got so panned, and I could never understand why, it's one of my all-time favourites!

It was mainly because of it's none too subtle pro one-China/communist message. But nevertheless it is one of the most visually beautiful films ever produced.

The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies

Dignant_Pink says...

the main character in Fight Club has no name. or the jet li movie "Hero", but that's kind of subverted since they start calling him "nameless." you could also argue reservoir dogs, but that's just splitting hairs.

What major/driving character is nameless in a film or novel?

Jet Li Vs. Jackie Chan

TheFreak says...

So pissed that this movie came 10 - 15 years too late.
On top of that...Hollywood.

"Hey, we gotta sell this to a larger audience. Grab any popular American actor who works cheap and stuff him into the story for broader appeal."

Jackie Chan - Check
Jet Li - Check
Story of the Monkey King - Check
Film ruined by addition of annoying and pointless American character - Check

Batting a thousand there Hollywood.

Jet Li is Nobody's Bitch!

demon_ix says...

I suppose that's one way of looking at it...

I see it as "Jet Li finally decided no other film star was man enough to defeat him, so he made a movie where the only one who can defeat him is himself, and in the end showed he was both an inmate-beating badass, and a cute makes-you-wanna-vomit husband at the same time... All with bad English and terrible acting."

Best Fight in the History of Awesome!
