The Israel-Palestine conflict: a brief, simple history

newtboy says...

1)As if they DID know what the future would hold when they left? EDIT: Those things you mention had not happened when the Jewish people invaded Palestine in the 30's, and NO ONE KNEW what was coming 10 years later.
2)Yes. The European Jews invaded FIRST. Before that, the Arabs and Jews lived peacefully in the region from all history I can find. There was no 'civil war', it was a war against invaders coming from all over Europe in an effort to 'create' a nation.
3)The Jewish population was not growing in relation to the Arab population, so it was still <8% when the European Jewish invasion began, an invasion of foreigners, not a native population boom which the Arabs had. Duh.
4)'standing army' is hardly a measure of applicable force. If it were, we would be Iraqis today. They had far more men in their army when we walked over them with advanced technology, exactly like the Jews did. I've been over that. We (the US) supplied them advanced weapons making enlisted numbers meaningless...
...also, you ignore that ALL 'Israeli' are in the army, 100%. The 'standing army' number is only the professional soldiers, not the entire force by far.
...AND....The Jews didn't need to mount any defense if they had not invaded.
5)What should they have done? Much better minds than mine have failed on a solution that pleases everyone, but stealing another people's property using deadly force, and then subjugating the survivors for decades to the stone age in concentration camps is absolutely NOT the right answer.
That said....If they were truly 'refugees', they should go to refugee camps (as should the Syrians, I don't get why they are spreading all over Europe, but I digress) until they can either be assimilated in other cultures or return home. Period.

Once again...things being bad at home does not give one the right to just move in on someone else's land and push them off. That's what Israel is, a land theft by overwhelming force, and an expansion of that theft continuing to this day. EDIT: It's akin to me stating 'my brother abuses me at home, so I'm moving into your house and you're moving out, and my buddy's with big guns gave me some to force that to happen.' Is that OK? If so, what's your address?

6)Have you seen the stuff right wingers used to wright about Jews...how about the KKK? How about Palin and her cohorts? If some idiot spouting hatred is a reason to run, the entire planet would be on the run all the time.
Would you support blacks invading any European countries they choose because they are treated poorly here in the US? With money and arms? Displacing the current residents and subjugating any that stay as sub human non citizens? I doubt it. EDIT: Would you also make the argument then that it's OK because the invaders are a smaller military than the country they invade, even though they have far better weapons and more of them? What's the difference?

The Israel-Palestine conflict: a brief, simple history

greatgooglymoogly says...

The formation of Israel and the question of stealing land can be debated, but at this point it is history and cannot be changed. At some point a nation needed to arise out of the ashes of the Ottoman empire. The problem was, when one did it didn't encompass the entire area. Arab Palestinians didn't vote to accept the border, but neither did they declare war on Israel in 1948, how could they if they weren't even a state? The root of today's problems have to do with the taking of land by act of war. Palestinians are punished for the acts of the other arab nations.

I found it highly surprising the video didn't mention the countless UN resolutions condemning Israel's acts of land confiscation, usually with the USA and Israel the only ones opposing it. In war you can defend yourself, even invade the enemy's territory. But when it's over you have to go back your home, you can't keep a permanent army presence on the captured land and slowly allow your citizens to start living in the captured territory. The fact that the land wasn't part of Jordan made it easier for people to give Israel a pass since they weren't stealing land from a nation, just a nation-less people. That doesn't make it any more justifiable. Israel should have occupied the territory until the end of hostilities and then completely withdrawn.

The video mentions the land they grabbed from Egypt, the almost empty Sinai peninsula that was an incredible strategic value. They were plenty happy to hand it back for a peace treaty, mainly because the hardcore Zionists weren't determined to expand the state of Israel there as they are in the west bank, which has much more history for their people. Notice how they went out of their way to establish a salient to Jerusalem during the 1948 war.

The only reason at some point in the last 40 years Israel hasn't just put up a fence and closed the border permanently(surely the safest choice if you're really worried about suicide bombers) is they wouldn't be able to move beyond that border and capture more land, which is what the orthodox Jews demand. People living in the west bank live under different laws based on their religion. Israeli civil code if they're settlers, military rule if they're Palestinians. How ironic that Israel is lauded as the great democracy in the middle east, yet deny the right of representation to millions under their control.

Israeli Soldier Stopped From 'Arresting' 12 Year Old

iaui says...

Wow. We don't really know enough to say whether or not the young boy actually deserves to get arrested (because we can't see what he did and it'll just be one side's word against the other.)

BUT, that Israeli soldier did throw some sort of explosive at the crowd of journalists and women and children. Fuck that guy. He is a total disgrace to humanity.

Israeli Woman Sets Car On Fire At Gas Station

Sagemind jokingly says...

Smokers, they should all be arrested and smoking should be illegal. These are the type of people that smoke - they can't be trusted.

Or we can make the story about the fact the she's Israeli. Israeli's can't be trusted, they all want to set your car on fire once your back is turned.

I have no idea where I'm going with this, just one of those moods - it's the media I'm lampooning here.... because they need to have a scoop to sell the story. It's impossible that one person could just be loopy enough to do something stupid - there needs to be a conspiracy behind the violence.

Okay - I'm done

george carlin-the sanctity of life is bullshit

Asmo says...

The sacredness of life is subjective, which makes it a useless measure.

A Palestinian mother thinks her son's life is priceless, an Israeli mortar team don't even consider it. An American husband thinks his wife's life is sacred, the terrorist that blows up the plane she is on does not.

Think about the dispassionate way we regard yearly statistics on road fatalities or death due to chronic disease. Do we weep our hearts out for every one of those deaths? Of course not, those lives have no worth to us beyond the abstract "fellow human being". They don't really bother us emotionally because we have almost no care for them.

If life is only subjectively sacred, then it's not really sacred at all...

The people that picket abortion clinics are the same ones that vote down social support mechanisms to promote and enhance people's lives. Life is so sacred that they oppose things that would make the live far more worthwhile living...

I'd say "ironic" but it's not surprising in the least.

Gaza: Why is no-one rebuilding it? BBC News

newtboy says...

Even if that was true, (and it's almost certainly not, it's a figure based on Israeli estimates based on promised funding, not actual funding, not facts, not records), you do realize it's not still the 90's, right? Things have gotten exponentially worse for them since the 90's.

Arafat spent it on arms and bribes.

Gaza: Why is no-one rebuilding it? BBC News

lantern53 says...

Who owned it before it was inhabited?

Nobody.

It belongs to whomever can hold it...same as any country. The land doesn't have 'property of...' signs anywhere, does it? If the Israelis wanted Gaza, they could get it.

The palestinians seem to be an example of how not to do anything right, hence the destruction of their area. Their leaders just sock away foreign aid or fire rockets at Israel, which brings back the destruction 10 fold. They need to smarten up.

Conflict in Israel and Palestine: Crash Course World History

newtboy says...

If Israeli attacks weren't fully funded proxy attacks from larger nations like the USA, you might have a point.
If Iran and Syria had not 'supported' Hezbollah, there would be no Palestinian area today, only Israel.
The reality is that if "Palestine" could defend itself like any other nation, Israel would be 1/2 it's size and not constantly expanding, and there would be hundreds of thousands more Palestinians who had not been killed by Israel and the isolation/starvation they caused.

It seems you're saying that any nation not busy expanding into it's neighbors is 'weak' and should be invaded? Maybe I read wrong?

bcglorf said:

If the Palestinian attacks weren't fully funded proxy attacks from larger nations like Iran And Syria you'd be dead right. As it is though, groups like HeZbollah are just an arm of the Iranian state launching attacks on Israel and testing it's resolve. It's horrible, but the reality is that if Hezbollahs attacks do more damage than is done in return, the attacks from them will continue to escalate as Iran throws more resources behind it. Regrettably we live in a world were restraint and being the better man are just signs of weakness encouraging the militaristic parties to push even harder to take advantage.

Cenk Uygur debates Sam Harris

billpayer says...

@RedSky profiling is dumb. I thought that exactly as Harris mention the old granny in the wheelchair who shouldn't be searched. Guess what, if that was the case where do you think they will hide the next one ? It's so dumb. If the bad guys know you will not search children or old people, who do you think will be used for smuggling next ?.
Your other post, Radical Christians are just as happy to die and go to heaven. it's called the Military, and yes they forcibly proselytize and recruit from the poor and minorities and yes they murder people of other religions on a massive scale.

@gwiz665 No. Judaism is just as bad. Judaism also suffers from Racism. That could be argued is why it does not spread. Look up Jewish intermarriage. Their doctrine preaches the disregard and manipulation of the 'GOYA' or 'animals' because they are lesser human beings. That is why they do not inter-marry or recruit. That is why over 90% Israeli's support bombing defenseless Gazans including targeting children. That is why Israel is imprisoning or forcibly deporting Africans. That is why Israel treats Israeli Arabs like sub humans.

ALL RELIGIONS ARE EQUALLY AWFUL.

Bill Maher and Ben Affleck go at it over Islam

What a surprise, the two Jewish panel members are anti-muslim.
Sam Harris pro-Israeli.
Bill Maher is racist. Pure and simple.
never heard him calling out Judaism for Israels genocide in Gaza.

I'll never watch his lame unfunny racist shit again.

TYT - Israel steals more Palestinian land

Gee, why would someone be shooting missiles into Israel? I just can't fathom why that would happen. Those poor innocent Israelis always being attacked for nothing. We should all continue to support them, and I guess Russia too.
