Er mer gerd….FOX (and I’m certain other righty propaganda outlets) is now complaining about hearing about Hunter Biden all the time! Last month FOX mentioned Hunter Biden 1300 times, more almost twice an hour 24/7….but GAWD DAMNIT WHY WON’T THOSE DAMN LIBTARDS STOP SHOVING HUNTER BIDEN IN YOUR FACE!?

He’s constantly going on TV giving speeches…oh wait, that’s Don Jr, ok, he’s always posting coked out videos attacking his fathers enemies….oh wait, that’s Don Jr…we’ll, he’s intricately involved in his father’s administration creating disastrous policies and agreements while being unbelievably high on coke….oh wait, that’s Don Jr.. I wonder, besides right wing propaganda, how many times has Hunter been in the news? Once? Twice in 3 years? 🤦‍♂️

You ijits are just too fucking hilariously clueless. So pissed at yourself for being utter morons completely devoid of rational thought processes or factual information, but unwilling to admit it because that might be rational. 😂😂😂😂😂

Trump is going to be your nominee, that’s a given, he took over the party, but it bears noting he is not attracting new voters, not one. He’s playing HARD to his base, but not one bit to centrists, undecided voters, and especially not to Trump voters that switched to Biden. Can you think of a single person who is pro Trump today that wasn’t pro-Trump on Jan 6? He has the second hurdle of Covid, because MAGgots were infected and died at a 75% higher rate than democrats in the same areas, so hundreds of thousands more Trump voters simply don’t exist now or are disabled…directly because of Trump policies. He’s only lost supporters since his failed coup too, and all those RINOS (by which I mean actual republicans that hate Trump’s narcissistic fascism, hatred, division, and stupidity) aren’t voting for Trump. This all assumes he’s not in prison by election time…it’s clear avoiding prison is the only reason he’s running.

MAGA has turned out to be a comedy troupe, like the keystone cops but without the “trying to do the right thing” part. Keep it up, it’s incredibly gratifying watching the fascist MAGgot party crumble under the oppressive weight of their own hatred and stupidity. The massively unpopular 6 week national abortion ban promise from all your candidates for president guarantee you a loss, but you’re too dumb to see it. Loving those MAGA tears, so yummy!

Insane $3000 Steam Punk Puzzle Box! - Solved!

cloudballoon says...

Maybe it's the model builder in me, but for that money, I'd go for any DeAgostini model kits. The construction is super intricate that'll take more than a few hours, the finished models are like museum-level art pieces.

Hmm... maybe sell me this puzzle box in pieces that I can build myself in 70+ hours for $200 and I might bite. The process of building it must be more enjoyable.

The Vitamin D Paradox in COVID-19

newtboy says...

So if you synthesize your own through exposure to sunlight, you’re good? Or at least better off?
Is it possible that it’s not the delivery method, but the systems that use vitamin D being healthy beforehand vs being supplemented after the fact? Maybe it takes a while to get those systems healthy, and supplements don’t help with that.

Edit: Maybe, since the same receptors are used to metabolize vitamin D as to infect a cell with covid, those receptors being “full” might be what’s stopping infections, and dosing with vitamin D after infection doesn’t magically replace the Covid with vitamin D? Not really about vitamin D or why you need it, just about the mechanism the body uses to use the vitamin D? Biology is intricate, and why things work and how is not always clean and simple.

Melatonin? Then why aren’t people with more melatonin, people of color, nearly immune? Why are island nations like the Virgin Islands still having outbreaks today? Why were Southern states hit just as hard or harder than northern states? Many questions here.

His explanation seems to confirm this. If your cells produce vitamin D efficiently, they are less prone to infections, if you artificially add artificial vitamin D, it helps with the cellular functions, but the processes that should be producing it are still suppressed, possibly more because your body isn’t triggering them due to low vitamin D levels. It’s less about overall vitamin D levels than about having healthy systems that properly produce and utilize it….at least that’s my takeaway.

It’s not just about sunlight..it’s about diet, overall health, sleep, etc. biology is complex, and we always want a simple solution. There isn’t one most of the time, and our attempts to simplify only make things worse. Eat well, sleep well, get some sun, get some exercise, and you’ll be as safe as you can be naturally….then try supplements in addition, not instead.

I get plenty of sun, and my windows are from the 50’s. It definitely makes me feel better to get sun, but there’s a limit. Don’t just go sunbathe in Arizona, use your brain.

PFAS: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

newtboy says...

Nonsense. Pre industrial agriculture wasn’t very damaging in most cases…and when it was it was on a minuscule scale compared to industrial agriculture.
Pre industrial building wasn’t excessively environmentally damaging in most cases, certainly not to the point where it endangered the planet or it’s atmosphere.

It's utterly ridiculous hyperbole to say we have to be cavemen to not destroy our environment. We don't even have to revert to pre industrial methods, we just have to be responsible with our actions and lower the population massively. With minor exceptions, pre industrial farming caused little to no permanent damage, and it was almost all easily repairable damage. (With a few exceptions like Rapa Nui that may not have been over farming but cultural damage, we aren't exactly certain what happened there).

I eat berries now, don't you? I grow raspberries, blackberries, black raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and Tay berries myself. People would be healthier if they ate berries, and they're tasty too. What?!

Yes, around 7 billion need to die (without procreating first). Better than all 9 billion.

There’s a huge difference between being occasionally deadly and so insanely toxic we destroy our own planet in under 200 years to the point where our own existence is seriously threatened.
Edit: toxicity levels matter as much as exposure levels. Cavemen impacted their environment at levels well below sustainability (mostly….the idea they killed the mammoths or mastodons off by hunting is, I believe, a myth….natural environmental changes seem much more likely to be the major influence in their extinction.). Per capita, modern humans have a much larger, more detrimental footprint than premodern humans, exponentially larger….and there’s like a hundred thousand times as many of us (or more) too. We need to reverse both those trends drastically if we are to survive long term.

Yes, progress includes risk, but risk can be managed, minimized, and not taken when it’s a risk of total destruction. We totally ignore risk if there’s profit involved.

This is a night time comedy show, not a science class. I think you expect WAY too much. It points out that there is a problem, it doesn’t have the time, or the audience to delve into the intricate chemical processes involved in the manufacture, use, and disposal of them. It touched on them, and more importantly pointed out how they’ve been flushed into the environment Willy nilly by almost everyone who manufacturers with them.

vil said:

By that logic, Newt, its back to caves and eating berries for everyone. And 7 billion people need to die to make planet Earth sustainable.

Everything civilization does is toxic in some way. Even living in caves was deadly, ask the Mammoths.

I like how youre taking everything responsibly but in this case you might be lumping too many things into one problem. If we strive for any progress at all we have to take risks.

Maybe the consensus will be that we cant handle the production problems and need to ban the poly stuff, but this video was not the compelling analysis that would even push me in that direction.

How a Kar98k Works

That's what you have to tell yourself to get through the day....but there was absolutely no evidence produced of that.

If the election was stolen, then Democrats also control the Senate because those republican senators didn't actually win their elections. Can't have it both ways....and you can't explain how or why only the presidential portion was effected by fraud but not the rest of the ballot. If it was stolen, it would have been across the board. So asinine, little Bobby. You're grasping at straws.

If democrats stole it, they have suddenly become the ultimate Ocean's 80 million, pulling off the most intricate heist without leaving a trace. If they are that competent, they should definitely be running the country....but thinking they are that competent means ignoring their entire history.

My election was stolen in 2016 when the "winner" had over 3 million fewer votes than the "loser". When the person with the most votes loses, that's a stolen election, not when the person with millions more votes wins. Duh. This isn't Russia.

Now get out there, destroy the GOP and boycott Georgia like Trump ordered.

Sesame Street: Respect is Coming

ChaosEngine says...

So I’ll grant you the fantasy monsters and soft core porn, but the violence is definitely a hard R.

Besides, there’s a lot more to the show than that. GoT at its best is medieval House of Cards. It has great characters and a pretty intricate plot.

It’s not perfect, and of course, you don’t have to like it, but dismissing it as tits and dragons just isn’t fair.

Funny, that's actually what I thought when I watched GOT.
It seemed aimed squarely at high school kids imo. Fantasy monsters, pg13 violence, and super soft core porn, that's not aimed at adults.

THE AMAZING TRIPLE SPIRAL (15,000 DOMINOES)

Ehh.. I would really have preferred one continuous shot. No real point in having something that big and intricate set up if you're just gonna see a zoomed in part the entire time, you may aswell have built it and shot it in sections then.

The Simpsons - YOU'RE NEXT

poolcleaner says...

Way more disturbing than the actual movie it's portraying. Although the movie "You're Next" ain't all that bad. It's a pretty typical slasher but one of the victims turns out to be an ex wilderness survival child born to parents who lived off the land in Australia, so she sets up all these intricate traps to slow down and kill the murders. Pretty awesome at times.

The art film director boyfriend who get shot in the beginning is real life horror director Ti West, who directed an excellent retro satanic cult horror movie called "The House of the Devil". I love that shit. Had one of the actors from You're Next.

Can Coral Reefs Survive Climate Change?

newtboy says...

The suggestion that reefs might be saved by engineered or selected varieties 'farmed' by humans shows a lack of understanding of the massiveness of the problem. This isn't one, 20 square mile reef, which in itself would be completely impossible to 'reseed', this is the entire ocean.
Also, there's absolutely no way to select for varieties that can still make calcium carbonate in acidic waters, the chemical processes just don't happen, so selecting for heat tolerance only addresses one tiny part of an intricate, multifaceted problem.
I wish I could be placated by the idea that people are working on and will solve the problem(s), but I simply know better.

Need More Proof That The Music Industry Is Fake? Here You Go

I just watched DV8 Physical Theatre's filmed performance of John. Part of the National Theatre of London's series shown in movie theaters around the world.

Spoken word paired with dance.

The only dancer/actor who lost his breath was the baby of the troupe, looked like he was in his early 20's. The older actors were phenomenal in their ability to do the most intricate physical moves while speaking. Nary a huff or puff to be heard.

I only mention this to urge one and all to go see this show. It is fricking awesome.

crafting a Patek Philippe 5175R Grandmaster Chime Watch

newtboy says...

My only issue is the ridiculous extra time they spent machining patterns and filigree into parts that will never be seen by anyone besides the maker. That part really seemed like a waste to me. Well, that and the price tag.
The intricate and precise clockwork involved is great though, at least to me. Far more than needed, but most truly great things are. Just look at the Bugatti.
Also, I love the chime. You'll never re-create that tone with a tiny speaker and a digital file.
