TotalBiscuit | Let's not play Need for Speed: Rivals

People hear that the flicker fusion threshold is about 16hz, and that movies play at 24hz so they assume that there must be no benefit to higher framerates. Ofc, movies have a lot of motion blur to make the movement appear more smooth and quite often a TV will have sophisticated tech to make the lower framerates on TV shows appear smoother than they actually are. Computer monitors, for the most part, show sharp images and we sit closer to them so low frame rates are much more noticeable. The rods and cones in our eyes might have a "fresh rate" of 16hz (I think rods actually respond much faster, but w.e) but they aren't synchronised like a camera. Our eyes will detect light, or any changes in it pretty much instantaneously. You don't have to wait for the next refresh. At what point our brain, or the variance in latency of the optic nerve, become the limiting factors I don't know. I'd like to think we wouldn't have evolved such advanced optical receptors only to be bottle necked by our brains. In short: 120hz ftw.

My absolute greatest peeve with console ports is mouse settings though. The number of times I've had to delve into the .ini to disable mouse acceleration or set my sensitivity to something sensible. Sometimes even the .ini doesn't have the answer. I fucking hate it when you get a sensitivity slider with 10 arbitrary notches. "Don't worry gamers, I'm sure you'll find a setting you like. As long as your preference is for a mm of mouse movement to spin you between 360 and 720 degrees. Ps. you do have a gamepad rite?"

As you say, "Fuck you" indeed.

YES I agree 120% about the FPS and FOV limiting in games. WHY oh WHY do they take away or limit those options with such a heavy hand? Whenever I complain about it everyone acts like I'm insane to care about that because you can't see it.

I draw an analogy to a vinyl vs a digital recording, I may not be able to hear the different frequencies produced by the vinyl, but I can feel the difference in the sound. It's because complicated changes (rapidly drumming is most apparent) are based on an approximation of the sound wave in a digital recording (depending on the quality of the recording). Vinyl, meanwhile, is a recording of the actual sound wave grooved into the plastic.

Although it's nearly impossible to hear that difference, people still buy vinyls for some reason. Back to fps and fov though, I may not be able to see higher than 30 fps, but I don't live life (or drive cars) at 30 fps like a flip book. Your eyes don't give you an accurate picture of the world, they only give you a useful one.

Real life runs @ ∞ fps and htz. I'm not asking for anything close to that, just make the choice available or don't ban me for hacking when I go into my config file and try to change my fov and fps limit manually.

"Yes but it gives those players who change those settings an advantage"

All those things you mentioned Jinx have been located by members of the community and can be fixed through the .ini files. Google a bit and you'll find it pretty easy (or look up the post about it at pcgamer.com) While I do agree that it feels like entirely to much of it was a port job, the game itself is good enough I hardly care. Now if you'll excuse me these dragons won't slay themselves...

Ya, I "fixed" everything apart from the sensitivity-framerate scaling.

And it still sucks having to google fixes and mess around in config and setting files just for basic options that SHOULD be included on the fucking menu. The fact the game is good only serves to frustrate me more.

As the the UI, well I got used to it quite quickly. Its a little clunky but I don't think its so awful. I don't doubt that it could be better though. The only think which really annoys me at this point with it is there doesn't seem to be a way to draw one handed weapons on your offhand using it. Spells and Shields default to left hand, and weapons default on the right, but if you want say, a dagger in your offhand you can't equip it using a hotkey. Its rather clumsy.

WTF? Mind-blowing Condiment Picker Upper

Ryjkyj says...

>> ^dag:

I think I'm seeing a little conveyor belt on the "blade" of the tool - especially in the last shot. I think the material on that belt is the key. Looks like teflon or something similar.

Yeah, I think the point is that the material on top of the blade never really moves. It just sort of spins around the edge as it's fed from the bottom. So it really is sort of "picking up" the condiment and getting underneath it. It's a tough action to describe but it's not unlike a conveyor belt. Pretty ingenious although like Zifnab said, who knows how the hell the need came up.

EDIT: The site I just read said that it was designed for bakers ini order to handle bread, etc. that's too soft or can get messed up by sticking to a person's hand. It really makes perfect sense.

findthumb

First of all, holy fucking shit the findthumb command actually worked!?!??!!?!?
Secondly, I bought Bioshock 2 and feel like i was totally ripped off. The game is good enough, but the pc version has HORRID mouse controls for some reason. I've tried multiple fixes and scoured forums looking for a way to make the game I bought for $50 play as well as my $10 copy of Portal or any other FPS. Anyone else run into this? I'd love to play the game...someday...

General Unreal Engine advice you've probably already heard: Try disabling vsync in the video options. If that doesn't help, there are some INI tweaks related to mouse smoothing and 'direct mouse' you can try.

The unbelievable real time graphics of Cryengine 3

EDD says...

meh.
seriously, meh as far as improvement from 2.0 goes (not that the engine isn't all good and gorgeous).

And btw, global illumination was already included in the XRay engine that powered 2007's STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (released half a year before the 1st Crysis game) - the option wasn't on by default even on the highest of the default graphics settings and was only accessible via console though, because the devs thought (rightly so) that even most hi-end pcs would struggle with it. I know this because the STALKER TweakGuide wrote about it. I'm pretty sure the second STALKER game Clear Sky had the option enabled on higher graphics settings though.

Bottom line is, overall CryEngine 3.0 will probably still be 2.0 dumbed down for the consoles Apparently we're just going to have to wait for 4.0 for ACTUAL improvements.

p.s. blankman, get crysis warhead (some 30% optimized compared to 1st game) and take a look at the TweakGuides page and/or google for custom settings .ini files - even my 2006 crappy PC could run it on high @ some ~20FPS.

Virus / Malware creators need to die (Blog Entry by burdturgler)

Deano says...

Ouch, sorry to hear that. One big problem with Windows is that apps aren't consistent with where they store data/config data. Some little apps I have use ini files as well. I backup one key file but everything else is on external drives. If the laptop died I could carry on.
Still I need to do a new Windows image which I would use to start the recovery.

^ you'd love to ride that giant cock, wouldn't you?

Can't we arrange a threesome, really?? I'd sure like to WONKA that WILLY of yours *wink wink*

thepinky: what you're saying you're trying to do is good. the iniative itself, not the results I've seen so far. I do think you'll 'come around' eventually, at least to some extent, and start seeing things from points of view other than those of your community/mindset/values (other members' experiences have illustrated the Sift has this sort of influence).

yet I still feel you're trolling because I don't buy that the strong vibe of conscious attempts to illicit negative response and controversy I've picked up from some of your comments is really just me. you've rarely supported your claims, you've shown you can be angered by people expressing opinions that differ from your own, opted for name-calling ('liberals' is the worst offender on my list; there's no such thing, so would you please, PLEASE refrain from using that?), and sometimes you comment on gut feeling (and I think it's understandable that a lot of us Sifters have a beef with religious people who <W>go with their gut</W>). all of this mirrors an entire artificial mindset that is ignorant and hypocritical and in direct conflict with most sifters' views (and imo, the worst thing to hit America in the 20th century).

speaking of religion, sifters' attitudes won't change anytime soon, I can tell you that. meanwhile, it'd be a LOT more worthwile if you didn't preach about "creation" and "afterlife" (and any of that other stuff humankind has no clue about whatsoever) - instead why don't you sift some videos that paint religion in a positive light? I'll upvote any that come my way.

Oh, and I didn't call you an attention-whore. That's because I'm sure everybody is one, more or less - but yeah, you're definitely in the "more" camp So am I.

and rasch, I'll be waiting for that phonecall.
