Sexual Assault of Men Played for Laughs

BSR says...

It sounds to me as though you're on a mission to point out the evil taking place in children's movies that encourage bad things, such as torture as a tool. It also sounds as though you are ready to set aside some of your valuable time to bring attention to this "problem."

I'm not aware that you have ever attacked any sifters and it never crossed my mind.

What would you say if I told you Pixar knows EXACTLY what they are doing, why they are doing it and how they are succeeding, with or without your help? Your doubt about what they are doing is sending you down an unending, fruitless road costing you valuable time that you should be spending with your children. Not to mention the cost at the ticket window.

All the answers to your fears are already built into the same movie(s) you point out. If you look for evil you will create it and find it. Drop your cynicism and look for the good.

When you find the good you will be able teach your children how to get along in this world just by your example. Make your valuable time worth it.

I truly believe you are straightforward, honest, and as factual as you can be. Find the good and you will have unlimited power on your side. Yes, even the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion.

The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall
Some hand in hand
And some gathered together in bands
The bleeding hearts and the artists
Make their stand
And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy

I suppose that depends on the definition of demonizing and on my intent. As I said, it's not just an indictment of Pixar but children's film's more broadly. Its limited in scope because of the forum.

I'm not sure how to respond to your second comment about what I fear. That seems like some sort of red herring and I haven't attacked any sifters. I don't feel like the commentary on Pixar film's is an attack either, I doubt they realize what they're doing beyond adding what they think will be a salacious plot point to a movie.

I suppose I fear being surrounded by dumb internet trolls, but hey, all I can do is be straightforward, honest, and as factual as I can be.

The Day Jesus Returns

BSR says...

I remember my "judgement day." Greif.

I discovered for myself that I, unknowingly, had written my own bible. I created all the rules that I thought I should hold dear. Little did I know that one day I would be judged by own bible.

Then I lost someone I loved. I became suicidal. I could not bear the loss and the pain.

My plan was to drive head on into a semi truck, thinking that hopefully the driver would survive somehow. I drove back and forth on the highway I picked to end my life.

I imagined what the crash would be like and who it would affect. Then I pictured something that stalled my plan.

Upon crashing into the truck I envisioned the people I love being crushed and dismembered in slow motion. My parents, siblings, friends, as though they were in the car with me.

In my death I would be the only survivor.

I had destroyed the world. With a single bullet, I could have destroyed the world. To me, that meant one thing. If I had the power to destroy the world, then I must have the power to save it. The only thing standing in my way was the bible I wrote for myself. Forgiving others was the easy part.

Forgiving myself was not so easy.

The very thing that almost killed me was now the thing I had to believe in.

Love.

Pure. Simple. Without demands or conditions.

Every human needs love. "There lies the rub."

I snatched the pebbles from the Master's hand. It was time for me to leave.

God was no different than great works of art, music, poetry.

If there is a God, it must be me because I now have the only power God ever had.

Love.

Hey BSR, I appreciate your question.

However over the years I received revelation that showed me that Jesus Christ is the Messiah and the bible is His book. It all kind of culminated one day when God showed me my spiritual beliefs were delusional and my choice was either to give my life to His Son or deliberately deceive myself.

I knew I was a sinner, no one had to convince me of that. I knew that if God was holy I needed forgiveness because that meant there would be a judgment. I knew that was the reason that Jesus was sent, to save us from that judgment.

His revelation has taught me that there is hope which is real, substantial, and available every day of our life. He has taught me to love sacrificially and lay down my life for another. He has wiped every tear from my eyes and helps me with every problem and situation. He has shown me that He is all the bible says He is, and even more. I know He is faithful and eternally, He will always be there.

Dave Grohl's Short Film, 'How I Ended Up In Seattle'

Found a possible alternate embed -- 7:58 instead of 8:08, so I'm not positive it is the same thing:

(I'd invoke that as a backup, but I doont have the power captain!)

*edit*
I'm sure enough this is the same video that I'll upvote. I dunno if the original embed is dead or blocked, but seems like it must be one of the two.

If you could kill with impunity, would you?

MilkmanDan says...

Weird. I get the sense that from the perspective of the author of the question, he's taking the specifics too literally; sort of the opposite of how people try to weasel out of introspection when confronted with things like the trolley problem ("I'd pull the lever, AND shout as loud as I could to try to warn the guy", etc.).

To me, the idea is not to be worried about things like accidental use of the power, whether or not you know/believe that you have the power, etc. Assume that you have the power, you are aware that you have it, and that there is no risk of accidentally triggering it. Would you use it?

I can say with near certainty that I would have used it when I was younger; faced with situations like the experience he had with the bully when he was 13. I might have given it up after a single use, when firsthand confronted with the reality of it. Or I might easily have descended into the depths of utter evil, and eventually started using it casually, for offenses real or imagined.

If I got the power NOW, I think it is fairly likely that I would never use it. I'd be strongly tempted, though.

The Way We Get Power Is About to Change Forever

newtboy says...

Ok....they start with a few mistaken premises.
Most importantly, the premise that energy is best stored in a chemical battery. It sounds good, but it's simply wrong. The best way to store large amounts of energy is in a hydro/gravity storage system. This is a two basin system, with two basins at different heights with a pump/generator linking them. When you have excess power, you pump water uphill. When you need more power, you let it flow back down. It's ecologically friendly, cheap, and effectively never wears out like batteries all do, it can work on any scale, and unlike most hydro doesn't impact a living river system. It's proven technology that's head and shoulders above battery banks.

Art of Police Cover Up - Recorded Hiding Evidence

newtboy says...

Um...that's legislative, judiciary, and executive.
Also, all 3 of those branches DO have oversight, although granted it is weak and highly politically influenced oversight at this point.

That said, public third party oversight of the police is hardly the kind of power that easily corrupts. Any abuse would be easy to spot and halt with some simple and clear rules. Many jurisdictions already have this, and I've never once heard of the powers being used for personal vendettas against a force or officer....or being abused at all for that matter. Usually they only have the power to suggest prosecutions or other actions (I think they need the power to fire officers at the least), and even that's unacceptable to the police.
The other option, the one you seem to prefer, is to allow the police to have all the corrupting power with absolutely no checks (except those they randomly self impose when it suits them) and no possibility of justice because the entire legal system is in cahoots and thoroughly corrupted, meaning any built in safeguards and oversight are made moot.

Funny to me that you start your post with "no need to politicize this with Obama/Trump or whatever" and end by politicizing it with Obama/Trump and whatever.

bcglorf said:

Power corrupts, and political affiliations don't change that. I get the mindset that oversight might help, after all if the ones with power are corrupt, watching for it and removing the corrupt makes things better. The catch is that oversight in itself is also power. Meaning the people there also get corrupt. So then let's watch them.

We already have the legal system's power separated into 3 parts that are supposed to check/watch each other. Adding another layer onto legislative, judiciary, and police isn't transparently and obviously the correct answer.

Greater transparency on this crap helps, but the problem of people being terrible doesn't have some simple answer. Obama didn't solve it, Trump's not going to either, nor did either of them undo the perfect solution of their predecessors.

Rotary Jails and Accidental Amputations

Strange that a hand crank would have the power to amputate someone's limb. Especially since the gear reduction doesn't seem to be all that high, there's just not that much friction in the system to overcome.
