Facepalm (Blog Entry by Sarzy)

Ryjkyj says...

Jesus Christ, the people who make that about Obama supporters just drive me nuts. (Segues into personal anecdote)

I used to work in an office in NYC. Not being from NYC, I was SHOCKED at the amount of people I worked with, smart capable people, who thought that it was so weird that I spent my spare time reading books. I used to have conversations like this about history all the time. I used to tell them stuff they couldn't believe, things that I thought at least a few people might know, but they were never interested, and they certainly could never even care to grasp the concept of history repeating itself. Again, these were capable, hard-working people that I respected. BUT...

They were the same people who were shocked, shocked, to find out that a presidential candidate could have the middle name Hussein. The same people who told me they heard about Obama's "true Muslim beliefs". The same people who questioned Obama's birth certificate when it was still a new idea. The same people who sent me chain e-mails with pictures of the Helix nebula that said things like: "astronomers call this the 'god's eye' and it's the biggest thing we've found in space".

I always though NYC was supposed to be this educated, literate, liberal place and I heard shit there that completely blew my mind (and not in a good way). These people are everywhere, in every age and in all walks of life. Never let yourself believe that they aren't.

And for that matter, never try to explain to them that history moves on, and common anecdotes and interests like the Titanic disaster become irrelevant and inessential to newer generations. Just like the survivors of the Titanic would've been mortified that you don't know the outcome of the Battle of Chancellorsville. I'm not trying to defend them, but I've certainly heard a lot fucking worse.

Ron Paul Booed For Endorsing The Golden Rule

bcglorf says...

@GeeSussFreeK As Netrunner says, virtually nobody advocates specifically for statism. In theory, pretty much everyone can agree on the Libertarian principle of your rights end where mine begin. The trouble is a very widely ranging difference of opinion on where my rights and your rights begin to overlap.

I would propose though that the most extreme 'statists' of late would have to be the ranks of Kim Jong-Il, Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi, Bashir Al-Assad, and Omar al-Bashir to name a very short list of those imposing the most rigid of adherence to the absolute power of the head of a state. If you oppose statism, at least to some degree the removal or end of such men holds common cause with your ideals, no?

Ron Paul Booed For Endorsing The Golden Rule

MilkmanDan says...

@Yogi - interesting (and disturbing) observation. In the 5 years I've been living in Thailand, most of the people I've talked US politics with (be they Westerners like Brits, Aussies, etc. or Asians / SE Asians) have exactly the kind of read on US foreign policy that Ron Paul is suggesting we have earned here. Ie., they see beyond the faces of the different presidents calling the shots and notice the long-term track record of going out and meddling, whether that meddling is beneficial or not.

For a long time, I bought into what we hear in the US and was hopeful that, say, the Iraqi people would be appreciative and thankful that we came and "took care of the Saddam Hussein problem". Remember when the troops got to Baghdad and we saw the Iraqis jubilantly tearing down his statue, later discovered to be largely or entirely prompted by US psyops? Then I moderated my position and thought, OK, we got into this, now we've got to see it through to the end for the sake of those people whose lives we have disrupted. That pans out real well when they overwhelmingly just want us to get the hell out...

Anyway, it sort of boggles my mind that Ron Paul would get booed over suggesting a "Golden Rule" approach. Maybe more of our fellow Americans need to get a little more world-wise and see for themselves that we've already got a big backlog of ill-will to overcome from our legacy of unrequested "intervention"...

Obama worse than Bush

Not support Saddam Hussein and his gassing of his own people as well as a brutal 8 year war with Iran? One of the many reasons Iran hates us with very good reason by the way.

That's what I thought.
For the rest of us mere mortals who lack the ability to solve problems by using time travel, what should be done to make the situations better instead of worse?

OH you mean what could OBAMA Do. I don't know because I'm not an expert on Foreign relations. You'll have to read more Chomsky I guess.

Who's been calling for Marxism?

dystopianfuturetoday says...

Remember when George W. Bush used to say the names "Osama bin Laden" and "Saddam Hussein" in close proximity to one another in order to transfer the fear many had of Osama to Saddam? That's a type of psychological manipulation called 'fear conditioning'. The point is to teach you to be afraid of something by associating it with something else that you are already afraid of. I sense the cold war has shaped your politics to a large degree - which is common among conservatives and conservative libertarians - so the word Marxism is likely something that causes you great fear. Through conditioning, your fear of Marxism has been projected onto the Democratic party by FOX news, Glenn Beck and the entire corporate media echo chamber. In reality, the Democratic party is in no way Marxist. It's actually quite conservative, economically speaking.

In order to illustrate my point, I'd like you to explain to me what you believe Marxism to be, and then to detail how, in your own words, you see the Democratic party as Marxist. If indeed this is a case of fear conditioning, you won't be able to do it.

Good luck.

Herman Cain suffers major brain meltdown on Libya topic

quantumushroom says...

If it was Obama stumped on a question, you would have a long list of excuses why he flubbed: heat exhaustion, campaign exhaustion, global warming, tired from playing golf, Republicans drugged his arugula, racism, racism, hidden racism, the illuminati...

Also, as someone who does not get his "news" from biased a-holes in the libmedia, I'm willing to give the man the benefit of the doubt. Cain is still a success.

The only flaw in Cain is he doesn't seem to know the reach of this corrupt regime's media shills.

What the fuck are you on about? Theres a huge difference in what Obama does in that video, He's struggling to make a point, sure, and he forgets a few words, which is actually pretty rare coming from him, his speeches are pretty flawless, even the ones without teleprompters (BTW, do you even remember that last president?) But basically, he fails to make the point clearly, and he ends up mangling the sentence and loose the point, fair enough
But Cain doesnt trip up words or forget a phrase: He has no clue what to say, or even what his opinion is supposed to be on this topic, this extremely relevant, important topic, and he doesnt know what he himself thinks about it. And apparantly, he cant make up his mind until he knows what Obama thinks, so that he could "think" the opposite, but then he doesnt know what Obama thinks either, so he's fucked.

If not, there's always this.

Amen.

Don't bother with mushroom though, it's 99% confirmed that he's just trolling for the lolz.

The most painful part of the video is watching him try to buy time as he tries to remember the talking points his minders made him memorize. He knows the key words are Libya and Obama, which slowly leads him to remembering something about an uprising, which leads him to remembering that questioning the opposition was the important talking point. Unfortunately he takes so long trying to remember these little keywords, while mumbling about them, that it becomes apparent for all that is the extent of his knowledge of the subject. That his planned attack on Obama then becomes his failure to get all the facts first is just a whole separate level of insanity.

QM, I tend to disagree with many of your political comments, but I have to say that I think you are right about something. That is: Obama has not lived up to the (gigantic) expectations that people had for him. The "change" that was "hoped" for was not to the extent that was needed/expected.

That said, parties aside, what would you have wanted to see done differently over the last 4ish years? I don't mean who does what. I'm not asking for your favorite candidate or historical president. For a minute I'd like to pretend that that doesn't matter or don't exist, and presidents never have names. I'm just interested in what actions/decisions could have been taken/made that you might have approved of. What could have been done differently to land us in a better place for us both, and Americans in general?

And, again without giving any mention to political stripes, how would you make the world a better place?
