Ricky Gervais responds to Golden Globes criticism

Yogi says...

>> ^pointykitty:

In my opinion it's far less offensive that he was "offensive" than it was that he used really lame, overdone, talkshow jokes. Charlie Sheen? I've heard that joke several times already on Jay Leno. It's DONE. I want humor from Gervais, not TMZ fodder. Try a little fucking harder.

If only you could perform or write something funny...then maybe we'd give a shit what you say about other really funny people.

Ricky Gervais Trolls Tim Allen

harry says...

Awards shows are mindless Hollywood circle jerks. For four hours, rich people come to the stage to thank God and a selection of contractually stipulated names, intertwined with brief sections of other rich people reading bad jokes from an autocue.

Now, I'm not entirely sure WHY they hired Ricky Gervais, but he did a good job making it enjoyable. And I guess it got the Golden Globes some awesome publicity and buzz.

Ricky Gervais' Extremely Uncomfortable Golden Globes Monolog

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

1. Hollywood (actors, directors, writers, et al) regularly tear a new one into targets that "didn't ask for it". The question isn't whether the person being satarized 'asked for it' or not. The question is whether they DESERVE it or not. And in this case, Ricky's satire was 100% on target and more than overdue.

2. 'Crossing the line' is entirely in the eye of the beholder. Ricky did NOTHING in this ceremony that the people in the audience haven't done 100X over to other people, industries, or whatever. Actors take low blows, cheap shots, and pure snide meanness as part-and-parcel of these award shows. They pontificate about this or that pet peeve, insult this or that person, or otherwise use interviews, ceremonies, and public events to vent. If you can't take it, then don't dish it out.

3. This whole attitude Hollywood is showing of, "Harumph! Why I never heard of such a thing! Harumph what a canard...!" is doing nothing except prove that Ricky was right to do what he did. Quite frankly, this reaction is showing that someone needs to do this at every Golden Globe ceremony, the Oscars, and EVERY single one of the 10,000 other ceremonies and award shows that actors throw for themselves every year.

Yeesh. You're ACTORS. You aren't that important. You're just people who can hit marks. Don't be so full of yourselves. You aren't special, or intelligent, or funny, or superior. In many cases you're a bunch of spoiled, selfish, drunken, drug-addled, adulterous, obnoxious, hypocritical jerks. Some of you are lucky you don't get egged when you show your face in public, so quit copping this "how dare he" attitude.

I think perhaps he will not be asked to do those ceremonies again but he is alot funnier and geniune then some of the guys they have hosting these bore fests

Just so everyone knows, this is not this year's Golden Globes. This year is 2011. It makes the above comment about Gervais not being asked back quite silly.

I just reread all the comments, who said he wasn't asked back?
