The 'unclimbable' hill is finally defeated

newtboy says...

They need to invite some Formula Off road guys next time.
Vikings really know how to fly a car up a vertical hill. In fact, they're driving skills are so godlike, they can drive on water.

New Math vs Old Math

vil says...

Segway.. is that still a thing? I thought everyone was riding those damn electric scooters now.

I like the graphic representation of multiplication as rectangles, works for me. Theory or method, I like to understand how things work so i can reinvent them myself whenever I forget the formula.

Hellboy (2019 Movie) Trailer

Drachen_Jager says...

Hollywood doesn't ever learn. They just keep making the same movie over and over until it doesn't make money anymore, then they find something else.

I'm so tired of seeing the same movie with different characters every few months. The genre is dead unless you break out of self-imposed formulas.

Sadly this does not look like they stray far from the well-beaten path.

And the CGI looks like shit. I mean come on, you can't even make a helicopter look real? WTF man, CGI could do that fifteen years ago!

Kid Physically Threatens Teacher For Not Rounding His Grade

psycop says...

I don't know if you've seen the sort of thing I'm talking about, but the usual formula is you see a video with a title like "Bully picks on the wrong guy" or something, then you watch the video and what you see is someone getting their head kicked in, and you feel good. Then you have an entire comment section with "That's what you get for being a bully" etc. But nothing in the video actually shows him being a bully.

So if the title had been "Man is attacked completely unprovoked and suffers life changing injuries" the judgement would be very different. Maybe you just watched a crime and enjoyed it.

I find it really strange that people will argue back and forward about the details of the content of the video, but never question the framing. It's "a given" he was a bully etc. because some text at the top said so, we just discuss whether it was appropriate.

So in this video, maybe the situation was exactly as described, but I don't know what information I'd use to get to that conclusion. And nobody in the comment section really seems to be trying.

Why don't we see him asking for his grade to be marked up? Wouldn't that be the money shot here? Kid makes outrageous request, which for some reason I edited out, then behaved terribly... maybe they didn't get their phone out in time... who knows? Not me.

This is not one of those 'instant karma' videos I mean, I'm just drawing the parallel with the context free clip, followed by collective righteous feeling and judgement.

Why Everyone is Going to Iceland Lately

newtboy says...

We went 2016 because tickets were <$200 roundtrip from the West coast on wow air.....air bnb was everywhere and great, most attractions were free and amazing, zero crowds, we drove the entire island in a week without rushing, everyone speaks English well, and because Formula Offroad, which I finally saw in person after years of disbelief. I would suggest a summer trip there to anyone who loves nature, beauty, friendly people, and interesting mythology.

Edit: book your day at blue lagoon first, they can be booked solid for months.

Neat science trick that I'd love to have the soap formula to

Samantha Bee, Full Frontal - Voter Suppression

newtboy says...

Just as incorrect as always, at least you're consistent.

1) All those things aren't rights, voting is. To remove a constitutional right should take more that a racist whim or the lack of a document. That should end your argument right there, but rationality and understanding my country's constitution isn't your strong suit.

2) buying smokes or liquor....not if you're over 25 or know a place.

3) getting a job....nope, only to get non cash job or benefits

4) getting a gun....not if it's a private sale

5)renting a house....nope, not true at all

6)getting married....not common law or religious marriage

7) I doubt you have an honest clue what's required to receive public assistance, but it's not a driver's license

Poor people don't do much of the rest of what you mention, they use cash, don't own a car, and don't travel.

These false excuses for violating the constitution and placing targeted obstacles in the path of mostly minorities to keep them from voting are brought to you by the anti voting rights party, Republicans, every election since voter protection was lifted and they could legally go after minorities voting rights again.
Odd, they weren't an issue before the court removed the coverage formula, making it nigh impossible to enforce voting rights.....
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_Rights_Act_of_1965

...the reason being, had the right implied this was their plan, or even a concern of theirs, the supreme court would have ruled that the protections are still needed and not removed said "coverage formula", which would bar most states from enacting any voting requirements, as they had historically proven and been ruled to be blatantly racially motivated.

Since that decision, republican led legislatures have tried everything but reinstating literacy tests to disenfranchise minorities. Voter id laws and voter purges based on minor clerical errors (errors made by the same people who then decide the error makes the registration invalid, errors that happen 3/4 of the time to minorities in areas with less than 30% minority populations, while whites in the same areas are 1/4 the errors caught, but almost 3/4 the population) these purely Republican sponsored laws are blatantly targeting minorities because Republicans don't represent minorities so don't expect their votes.

To imply that not having a ID to vote racist is BS.

Everyone of age has an ID.

You need an ID for nearly anything important.
Buying
Smokes,
Liquor,
Airplane tickets

Getting a job
Getting a Gun
To drive
To get a passport
Buying groceries and paying with a check.
Buying some forms of medicine

Opening a bank account
Apply for food stamps
Apply for welfare
Apply for Medicaid/Social Security
Apply for unemployment
Rent/buy a house
Drive/buy/rent a car
Get married

This false argument is brought up by Democrats every election.

Why Meat is the Best Worst Thing in the World

newtboy says...

Ha! Thanks for the link.
So, it's total b.s. as I read it.

First, then he misstated, he thinks we could feed 3.5 billion more people if we converted all land currently providing food for animals into successful industrial human farmland, which is not what he said at all. He said "if we just eat what we feed to animals", which is impossible insanity.

Second, they extrapolated by determining the approximate number of hectares being used to provide animal feed (likely including natural grasslands that aren't and cannot be planted or farmed), then extrapolating again using a formula that tells them the maximum number of people you can feed with successful aggressive multicrop farming of the same number of hectares, as if you can get the same maximum yield from any hectare....and ignoring that it takes huge amounts of fresh water to farm industrially, water that native grasslands don't need or have available.

He doesn't actually explain how that number comes about and what it means exactly. Where he pulled that statistic from, for anyone interested. from.http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/8/3/034015

Lucas di Grassi on how quickly Formula E has evolved

newtboy says...

You would like formula off-road, Icelandic off road racing. Those cars have no electronics, just 800 HP motors, industrial gearboxes, and military axles tied together with steel tubing. The things they can do with that minimalism are astonishing.

This is all fine, why not. IMHO Formula 1 is basically approaching this from the other shore most of the time.

Racing cars used to be about adrenalin, taming a beast, surviving unlikely odds and so on, an adventure for gentlemen.

In the last 40 years it has become a competition in pushing buttons, mostly.

If racing cars can have ABS, automatic gearboxes, power steering and all, why not an electric motor?

I still think it is sad and I am glad I saw F1 in the 70s.
