Penn Jillette: An Atheist's Guide to the 2012 Election

Rock isn't flammable

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!"

Shiny is here to 'sell' a point of view. Granted, it's the wrong audience to espouse fundamentalism, but if you see someone's house is burning in the night, you don't worry about their grumpiness at being awakened by total strangers.
Be grateful for hearing other points of view, and more grateful for resistance, it's the only thing that builds strength.

Someone wrote of shiny: It's highly unlikely that you will ever convert anyone here but at the very least you'd be less despised if you weren't so angry and obnoxious all the time.
Shiny's the one being infinitely patient here, and by an act of free will endures these cheap shots. A less angry foe you do not have.
A good Christian spreads the Word, and in another Penn video Penn himself states if you Believe, you should be out spreading your message.
You should be grateful there are shinys out there to keep you honest, as honest as a liberal can be, anyway.

I can't swallow this. By its very nature, Christianity as espoused by Shiny is bigoted and infinitely intolerant (the ultimate end of impatience) of any view point in opposition of its literally written in stone beliefs.
Just because the evangelists adopt a cloyingly condescending tone that can be mistaken for politeness when they 'discuss' (read: lecture and don't listen) this with us heathens does not make them 'less angry' or 'infinitely patient'.

Generally speaking you are right. But in this case shiny is a supporter of the company which only builds houses out of highly inflammable compounds. And he may was at the crime scene, who knows.

I wonder if he poured gasoline or some other flammable liquid onto the top of the engine, and then tried to heat the engine enough to ignite it? ..or some variation on the theme.

The new ASUS cardboard motherboard box is a PC case

residue says...

wow, that's ridiculous.. based on the apparent structural integrity of those...boxes... It would need to take up an awful lot of real-estate on a floor or desk.. Standing it upright doesn't seem to be a viable option since it would be off-balance with all the crap mounted(?) to one side. I also don't like the idea of putting all my heat-producing, electronic components inside a flammable container...

If they are concerned about waste, why not take the extra money used on manufacturing cardboard cases and instead use it to include pre-paid shipping for the box to a cardboard recycling center?

Maybe your utilities should take measures? I'm sure it's not too difficult to degas the water before piping it into the municipal water grid.

Rural pennsylvania does not have a municipal water grid. Each home, farm, or development has it's own wells which pump water up from deep underground. So the only way that gas companies could do it is to install a water filtration system in every home.

I agree that this type of rural water wells have always had methane problems, but the guy who lights his water on fire and has the lawsuit - I'm sure he didn't have nearly as many problems before granting the gas drilling rights.

Pit crew flee from invisible fire

AeroMechanical says...

At the time of this videos, Indycars ran on methanol rather than ethanol. Ethanol has a very faint blue flame, but methanol is almost perfectly clear, though you can see the flames as sort of a shimmering disturbance in the air. These days Indycars run on ethanol, but it's more of a marketing thing than for any practical reason... the racing industry is hard up to show how "green" they are.

Are we sure this isn't a very elaborate Monty Python sketch?

While I am sure this is a joke, you can actually do this experiment at home with alcohol. Get yourself some everclear or some other very highly pure ethanol and set it ablaze. And did you notice he used the word inflammable. That is the correct word, we only recently made the word flammable up because it confused to many people.
