Guy who snitched on Warlogs leaker gets trashed by hackers

Access Hulu from Outside the U.S. Without a Proxy Server (1sttube Talk Post)

NICE! It only works on about half of the sites I've tried it on (and not Hulu, unfortunately) but that's still pretty damn sweet. I can can finally watch Daily Show clips! Thanks, campion.

Sounds like the port might not actually be blocked. I haven't actually followed the step described to block it since I just used my firewall which was alot easier, but Hulu.com works fine. Also be sure to disable your Ad blocker.

Psychologic, thanks, I didn't know about the ability to backup games, that's great.

And for me, ultimately I just had to switch firewalls and anti-virus programs to get around the stuck updating bug (I was using Avira and Zone Alarm). It was just frustrating since no other program seemed to have trouble, and disabling the firewall and anti-virus or starting in Safe Mode didn't fix it. Nor do they have updated installers on their website, you always have to update in order to finish the install. Believe me I went through the help steps suggest by users on half a dozen threads to no avail. The problem does stretch back years. And it seems crazy they don't just provide a simple command line switch to enable offline mode.

^ Valve Going Out of Business: I think this is seen as a bigger issue than it really is. You can make backup copies of your steam games, and Valve could always turn off the required authentication system if needed. This leaves me with two concerns, but I don't think they're specific to Valve:

-What about online games that use Steam's server browser (this would also affect non-steam games that use their company's servers to search for active games).

-What happens if the Steam servers go down and you haven't backed up your games? Well, you're probably out of luck at that point(same if you lost your game CD on a non-steam game). Of course, chances are that you would have advance warning for something like that so you could download them before the cutoff.

Stuck Updating Client: I looked around and most of the people reporting this issue ended up figuring out that it was their firewall software that was causing the issue. Apparently it let them download the content but wouldn't allow the .msi to run. I also found the instructions below, but I didn't spend a lot of time researching it. Hope that helps.

Windows 7 / Vista solution

1: Load up Steam, wait till it's stuck on 99%.
2: Press "Start" button, type "msconfig" into the search bar and press enter.
3: Under the "Boot" tab where the "Boot options" are, tick "Safe boot" then tick "Network".
4: Restart your computer and allow it to load up in safe mode.
5: Everything will most likely look big and ugly.
6: Load up Steam, once it completes the update, log in.
7: Press "Start" button, type "msconfig" into the search bar and press enter.
8: Under the "Boot" tab where the "Boot options" are, un-tick "Safe boot".
9: Restart in to normal Windows.
10: Run Steam successfully.

Frontline: The Vaccine War (58min)

NordlichReiter says...

Why do you vaccinate? Why use a condom? Why carry a tazer, or gun? Why walk in well lit very populated areas?

Once when I was younger I took a flu shot, and then a while later I got sick; you guessed it with the flu. I don't like the idea that "you where probably going to get sick anyway" because it is a stupid argument thrown out there with little explanation. I was already sick with flu before I had gotten the shot; but not showing symptoms. Which means that my getting sick was a coincidence but when I was younger I fell for the logical fallacy. At the time in my mind it was the vaccine that caused sickness.

Do I expect the vaccination to protect me 100%? Do I expect my house Alarm to keep me from being robbed or protect me from home invasion? No, but it can help protect me.

I deal with this stuff at work in a different sort of system. How do you protect your network from intrusion? By running a firewall, using a NIDS (Like snort), logging at the gateway, and running up to date anti-virus.

Does that save you from attack? No, which I frustratingly know. Even with all of the protections in the world it can't guarantee safety. It only lessens the likelihood of attack or infection.

The best method of security is prevention. Get Vaccinated.

I have flash 10,0,45,2.

Something is being blocked. But I don't know where. I'm only using the basic XP firewall and have taken this machine off the router.

Everyone of the videos I can't play connects to plugins.longtailvideo.com. I can play every other video here. ugh.

I realize this. I'm am IT professional. Regardless of software, firewall, and or router rules. If the kiddies go to the Kids channel they are in for a big surprise, as it's full of videos not suitable for young children or subject matter directed towards adults that they couldn't possibly comprehend. Perhaps when you get your ruby you can make a bid to take over the channel. It seems the owner isn't active on the site any longer anyway from what I can tell.

In reply to this comment by BoneyD:
Erm no, I'm not kidding. Parents can use filtering software, router url blocks or a myriad of other tools to ensure they only go to the kids.videosift.com page. It's not outside the bounds of reason that kids might be looking there, why would people even post children's videos in the first place?

Btw, please don't talk down at me like that yeah? I may not have as high a star count, but I've been around here a while.

In reply to this comment by Duckman33:
You're kidding right? Do you really think kids that young view VideoSift and are watching Bill Maher clips? And if they are, are you telling me they go straight to the Kids channel and don't look at anything on the main page where in plain full view are sifts with sexual subject matter, boobs, more boobs AND foul language, etc. blaring in their little faces? Seriously? Please. Not trying to be a jerk. But let's use some common sense here.

In reply to this comment by BoneyD:
The subject of appropriate content for the channel has been brought up before:
http://kids.videosift.com/talk/Kids-Sift-about-kids-or-for-kids
http://kids.videosift.com/talk/Kids-Channel-Dilemma

Just because a channel's strayed from it's intentions, doesn't mean it shouldn't be policed, does it? This video included metaphorical language about child rape and other such nastiness. Children don't understand sarcasm like that though.

I should have come to you first before going ahead and changing things, my apologies for that. But I just really think that Kids should stay as their 'sandbox'.

In reply to this comment by Duckman33:
I reviewed videos in the Kids channel before assigning that channel to my sift. It contains videos both for kids, and that have kids as the subject matter. Therefore, I'll be re-assigning the kids channel to my video. That said, please be aware of the subject matter of the channels before you re-assign my sifts, as I take great effort in verifying that they belong in said channels prior to assigning them.

In reply to this comment by BoneyD:
Don't think this is really suitable for the kiddies channel.

I am actually very glad every one is having problems - I was beginning to think my kids screwed up my computer playing more of those Free-Internet-Flash-Games!
(I'm currently running without anti-virus or firewall. Just can't afford to replace my old outdated one so I just removed it all..... Suggestions? Free-suggestions??)

Lol, there shouldn't be the need for police either, but here we are.

Title is correct. The problem is our governments aren't interested in protecting us. There shouldn't be any need for antivirus or firewalls, you don't walk around in a helmet in case someone hits you in the head. We should crucify these people and televise it.
