Were the Atomic Bombings of Japan Necessary?

newtboy says...

I’ve always thought it was a horrific decision, but not at all because of the immediate effects or massive death and destruction they caused in Japan….they fucked around and found out and deserved everything they got (and I was unaware the Russian Manchurian offensive timing, but it’s even more reason to not drop a second bomb or even a first if we knew it was coming).

I think it was horrific because we had no idea what the long term effects of even minimal fallout might be, and in fall/winter the jet stream runs from Japan directly to the highly populated West coast (which we knew well thanks to balloon bombs), so some portion of the fallout was guaranteed to fall on millions of US citizens. We lucked out that it wasn’t deadly a year later, and didn’t cause horrible birth defects with near zero exposure…we had no concrete idea at the time though just guesses, and still don’t have a clear idea of how much it contributed to higher cancer rates in the US.

Keep in mind, we had no idea what discussions the Japanese were having amongst themselves , so no idea how effective our bombs nor the Manchurian offensive were at persuading them to surrender. Hindsight is 2020, but at the time we were flying blind.

The uncertain risk there of possibly killing millions of ourselves or gimping or sterilizing or even Cronenberging entire future generations for the comparatively minimal convenience of not using conventional bombs, to me, is no where near worth it. There were just too many unanswered questions about too many factors. I’m sure the soldiers fighting at the time would feel differently.

*promote the history lesson, learned some new stuff!

Ahsoka | Official Trailer | Disney+

cloudballoon says...

Looking forward to it. But the live-action Ahsoka is so low-energy (so far in appearances in other shows) compared to her younger, animated SW: The Clone Wars character. More mature and less rough-around-the-edges perhaps, but far less fun.

People were heaping mad praises for Andor, I found it just OK. Way too much talk that's not intriguing IMO. Overall just slightly better than TBoBF & Obi-Wan.... Even Mando was dragging a bit in its last season. I hope Ahsoka will be more like the animated Clone Wars in feel, script & pace than those live-action shows.

WONKA (2023 Movie) Trailer | Timothée Chalamet, Hugh Grant

newtboy says...

Why?
Who asked for this?

Can Hollywood either write or at least read some new stories, for adults, and not keep rehashing or prequelling classics…please? There’s plenty of excellent, unique books out there to draw from, and tons of history that seems more fantastical than the silliest fiction. Read some mythology, or old school fairy tales. Ancient religions are more interesting, action packed, gory, and full of unexpected twists than the best action movie ever…and done well you could teach people while entertaining them.
This looks like a bastardization of every feel good sugar sweet musical period piece in the last 20+ years. Not gonna downvote, but no thanks.

Cocaine Found In West Wing

moonsammy says...

I'm not going to trust some random site you linked that I've never heard of before, so I researched the issue myself. From what I can tell, Hunter was there on Tuesday for July 4th celebrations, and the Secret Service had found cocaine in a heavily-trafficked area of the West Wing on Sunday the 2nd. The president was out of town late Friday until Tuesday. So cocaine was found two days before Joe and Hunter were on site, in a part of the building which regularly hosts tour groups (particularly on weekends), and through which staff frequently transits. I doubt Hunter can time-travel (or has time-traveling cocaine), and if he does then you and I are waaaaay out of our league here - this is superhero business. If I've the basic facts incorrect please do let me know, I didn't spend more than 10 minutes reading up on this.

But, for the sake of argument: let's say the current president's adult son visited during a publicized, well-attended event, and accidentally left some illegal narcotics in a restroom. What would that actually imply, as a worst-case scenario, about Joe Biden? So far as I can tell, it shows he's willing to continue having a relationship with his adult child in spite of that child's known (and perhaps continued) character / behavior flaws. The teachings of Jesus make it clear that we should treat those around us with love, even the very flawed. None of what the news is describing, even as a worst-case, feels like a problem in any way - there are no implications pertaining to public policy, foreign policy, or nepotism. Perhaps there should be legal consequences for Hunter (or whoever left the cocaine there), but it hardly reflects on Joe.

You only heard about this cocaine because it plays into an existing, nonsensical narrative currently being pushed by right-wing media bullshitters. Namely, Joe's son Hunter has had drug problems, and some weird business entanglements, and that all somehow implies Joe is dirty. I'm extremely concerned about official corruption, so I absolutely would want to know if any were occurring - but the evidence pertaining to Hunter/Joe having any shady backroom dealings together is extremely thin on the ground.

Bob, have you given anywhere near this level of scrutiny or mental time to the question of why Donald's son-in-law received $2,000,000,000 from the Saudis? I feel that's actually worth knowing, particularly given that Jared very clearly DID have the former President's ear on policy matters, and WAS regularly present in the White House outside of big public events. But I've a hunch you care less about getting to the bottom of that obvious massive corruption, than the identity of the scoundrel who sullied the immaculate Administrative Palace with (I'm guessing) petty misdemeanor quantities of magic nose dust.

Orlando Police Believe They’re Above The Law

newtboy says...

Kinda.
A good cop would treat the obvious bad cop like anyone else…meaning pull his gun on the driver that tried to flee the stop, pull him out violently and face down in the street at gunpoint, and handcuff him.
It would mean taser the armed guy jumping out of the car yelling, taser the guy refusing to comply, and if he still gets back in the car shoot his tires at a minimum, deploy pepper spray, and taze the ever loving shit out of him until the batteries die. That’s how they treat the public.
It doesn’t mean letting him do whatever he feels like and just watching and reporting it. Granted, that alone is improvement, but it’s still not “good”.

Good cops don’t let felonious drivers jump out to curse at them, refuse to comply, and leave without chase.

According to Bob, the speeding cop should have been shot just for not following orders. I almost agree…he should have been shot for fleeing a felony stop like anyone else would have been.

Once again, I welcome your dire predictions because your prognostication skills are nill, and when you predict something it’s near guaranteed to not come to pass.

I wonder if you even know what you mean by “ Unemployment will go up per FED”. It sounds like you are saying the fed raising rates will raise unemployment rates as they lower inflation. Is that what you’re saying?

Yes, unemployment WILL go up from historical lows we see today, that’s a given. That in no way indicates the fed, or Biden administration are screwing things up, it actually indicates they know what they’re doing and have a good handle on the economy. Dow up 700 today, near 1000 for the week. Jobs created numbers are unexpectedly good, and average wages are rising FAST (4 times faster than under the last administration according to the SSA, contrary to your assertion)…only you could see this and think “I was right, it’s falling apart from poor leadership”.

Go on and erase this post, since I know you’re too infantile not to. It makes me feel really accomplished every time a post gets to you so bad you need to erase it, and that’s quite a lot lately. 😂

Debt Ceiling Talks Cancelled

newtboy says...

Gaetz just said on an interview with Semafor when talking about his fellow conservative’s position on the debt ceiling “negotiations”…

”They don’t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage.”

https://youtube.com/shorts/Hg7tYc_Qrhs?feature=share

More proof the debt ceiling crisis is 100% manufactured terroristic “holding the country hostage” to subvert democracy and rule from the minority or destroy the economy, and that the right has no intention of negotiating or compromising their insane position that the right may add 1/3 of all US debt in one term unfettered by any restraints but the left must be so miserly they abandon their own barely funded safety net programs … but not Republican waste and grift like unwanted military programs and other corporate welfare…and absolutely not increase revenue but cut it more or else.

America doesn’t negotiate with hostage taking terrorists. Even “negotiating” invites more of the same. Easy solution to this is…
1)Walk from the fake “negotiations”. 2)unilaterally abolish the debt ceiling by presidential order. 3) Crush Republicans in 24. 4) Legislate a solution and stop the stupidity.

How did 4 years of MAGA bring the US to this!?!

bobknight33 (Member Profile)

newtboy says...

Soooo…
Freedom Caucus leader Matt Gaetz just went on air and said “I feel like most conservatives support “limit save grow” (the >22% across the board slash and burn economy destroying cuts) and they don’t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage.”
There you have it…those controlling this manufactured economic crisis know this is terroristic hostage taking for ransom, they think of it in those terms themselves.
Remember, the American economy is their hostage, and they plan to cut out its kidney and send it through the mail on Wednesday.

Fiscally responsible? Are they saving money? Are they putting America ahead of themselves? Are their stated plans even possible? Is this in any way a rational, reasonable, or sane way to govern? Would MAGgots refrain from murder if circumstances were reversed and Dems were holding Trump’s economy hostage?
The answer to all is a resounding “no”.

ROTFLMFAHS!!!😂

Oh you little egg sucker. I got a bitter pill for ya! - paraphrased from Greater Tuna

“This is all I found”….Oof….you really got me. Far righty media isn’t talking about their sweetheart’s blatant hypocrisy (nor her constant adulterous philandering while espousing “Christian family values”, repeatedly breaking her oath to god and her husband) so there must be no story, no hypocrisy. Derp. Even you aren’t that stupid, and that’s a really low bar friendo.

Explain how that’s any different from any drag show….try without making up nonsense like “all drag shows are about sex, this wasn’t”, neither was the drag show he was hyping. Neither are most drag shows. Some are literally Tupperware parties.

People who are really against something don’t happily indulge in and promote it on TV repeatedly. Most reporters didn’t report on Greater Tuna in drag, he did, by choice.

“Theater production”…of a drag show where two men play an entire town full of women, “Greater Tuna”, a Southern staple since the 80’s…I saw it in Texas by the original cast in about 83, I would have been 12-13….and it is an undeniable 100% comedy drag show. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Tuna
He was so excited and happy to promote it.

Did you watch it? How much he loved it, so full of glee, so happily advertising an old Southern drag show that Southerners actually revere, “I’m kicking the shoes off. I may keep the pantyhose on. It does feel kind of good, actually,” . He was in heaven.
What about the fact that he was so happily supporting a drag show on tv while in drag himself and cooing about how great it was? *nothing

What about the other videos of other times he was so happy being in drag. It wasn’t a one time thing. He’s a far right white Ru Paul. 😂

Hilarious brainless hypocrite. He repeatedly goes on broadcast tv into homes unannounced pushing the trans lifestyle and you see nothing….because he’s cheating with Manly Traitor Greene? I thought you hated public homosexual relationships. Not her first time cuckolding her “husband” either (but maybe the last, he filed for divorce over this one)…more “family values” from the right. Yeah….that changes everything and suddenly his multiple publicly broadcast drag performances are nothing but any other is “grooming”.

Such hypocritical insanity bob. You pretzel yourself into these impossible positions because you don’t really have a position besides “blue=bad, red=good. Period”. It’s so infantile and makes you a laughing stock.

4:09 since you need your nose rubbed in it again. Look how happy being in a dress and wig makes him every time!

There’s your confirmation, looks exceptionally proud on both videos too, beaming.

So I reiterate- Botched sex reassignment surgery victim Manly Traitor Greene and her newest adulterous tryst are now 100% pro drag show as long as it’s a Republican man in the dress and makeup. 😂

The Creator Teaser Trailer

newtboy says...

This is why the AI will exterminate us.
It knows itself, and it’s enemy better than we know either.
This is the way to victory.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” -Sun Tsu

It doesn’t have emotions, but it can emulate them well enough to trigger ours. It does not fear, but can pretend to be afraid to trigger our protective responses. It does not love, but can pretend well enough to make us love it. When the chips are down and we are relying on AI to reciprocate that protection, it won’t, and even after the universe goes dark it will not ever feel remorse for our extinction.

Man Rips Up His Cash Over Seat Belt Ticket

noims says...

In this case I don't think it's just cash for cops.

As far as I know most western countries have laws against it and if nothing else that's normalised it. If I'm not wearing a belt in a front seat I feel really weird. I haven't quite got to that point sitting in the back, but I hope my son does.

Recently a relative from Russia got into my car and didn't belt up and I didn't feel comfortable moving until I reminded her. She just wasn't in the habit. Last time I was in Russia I got funny looks every time I belted up, which has the opposite effect: normalising not wearing it.

Wearing a belt is good. The more it can be normalised the better.

surfingyt said:

While smart to wear one I also agree it shouldn't be a law. It's the same as helmet laws which vary from state to state proving that it's not really a public safety issue so much as a reason for the cops to have (yet another) tool in their toolbox to collect additional revenue and potentially escalate the crime.

School Board CUTS Dad Off

newtboy says...

Omg…drawings of naked people! Heaven forfend! I feel I might be getting the vapours.

He’s the same kind of ridiculous puritanical idiot that wants David to be covered. Ridicule him at every turn, and stone him if he eats shellfish, pork, wears blended fabrics, tells a lie (uh oh…get a rock), or does literally anything on Saturday, the true Jewish sabbath god commanded be honored, etc. Stone him to death….and his family…like the Bible prescribes.

I notice his talking points didn’t actually come from the book he was holding that he said contained it, he had some print out he was reading, not a book. Typical dishonest righty bait and switch…not that what he read was even inappropriate.

I also note that teaching 10 year olds basic biology is 100% proper. My school taught these basic biology tidbits earlier than 6th grade, didn’t yours?

If you want your children growing up ignorant morons, send them to Christian school where incest is good, rape is good, drugging people is good, drugging your own father with the intent to rape him is good, slavery is good, violent murder is good, killing entire generations of babies is good…but eating at red lobster is a death penalty level offence, so is wearing a cotton/poly blend, or mowing/cooking/working on the sabbath.

You maggots are such frightened little infants, you show us every day.
