How to get an egg inside a bottle and not break the bottle

Alcohol is drugs if exercise and a good beating are also considered drugs. Love them endorphins!

Also, any time a video displays someone that hasn't slept well, that should be considered drugs.

Worlds Hottest Curry - A League Of Their Own'

oblio70 says...

A major endorphin rush, and with a curry like that, one only needs a gentle push of the tongue on the roof of ones mouth to re-live the experience on demand for a few more minutes!

It is habit forming...like licking a battery (or so I've heard).

Worlds Hottest Curry - A League Of Their Own'

spoco2 says...

Apparently it gives an endorphin rush which is quite nice.

As for just trying it, sure, why not? It's an experience.

I ate a whole jalapeno while on a bus trip with little in the way of drinks available once.

Not pleasant, but here I am still talking about it

I have NEVER understood the compulsion to eat painfully spicy food. I don't think I have a male friend who hasn't tried something similar, always resulting in varying degrees of horrible.

F--- YOU - How To Stop Screwing Yourself Over

>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:

Not the best TED.

That's because it's not really a TED talk. TEDx is an independently run event. She wouldn't get away with this at a real TED conference, because you aren't allowed to sell anything tangible in your talk, like a book.

People like Mel Robbins, Dr. Phil and their ilk mean well. The problem is that people rarely walk away from these self-help seminars, with anything they will able to use. You leave the talk with this fortune cookie wisdom, elevated adrenaline and a endorphin rush. However this wears off. You are then back to square one with the same problems and a wallet that is $200 lighter.

It's naive and simplistic to think that you can rid yourself of problems, with a slogan. Slogans that are ever so popular in western culture, that it's no wonder that these people have a cache of them, ready to disseminate at a seminar.

I have the impulse to down vote this video in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 .. damn I missed the 5 second rule. Sometimes practicing restraint and not acting on impulse, can be good.

Final thought: How she tried to distance herself from the other self-help charlatans (in the opening 3 minutes), was a touch of brilliance.

Free Market Solution to AIDS Research (Blog Entry by blankfist)

They could sue for fraud if they're not dead because said disease hasn't completely overtaken them. All of your lofty ideas for how awesome a completely unregulated market would be come crashing down the second businessmen whip out their cost-benefit analysis charts.
You are the one conflating ideas here. The free market doesn't automatically mean that more eyes will be on every problem; it just means most eyes will be on the most profitable problems.

I'm glad the rest of the world doesn't have your cynicism when it comes to human endeavors. Chicken littles who live with so much fear are miserable people in real life. I hope you're not one of them.

People tend to want to do the right thing. There'll always be bad apples, but those are the minority. The majority of us receive endorphin rushes from doing good and feel symptoms of depression when we do bad. Evolution has made us caring of others. It gave us empathy. And when we open the playing field up to 350 million people instead of a handful of corporations, we're doing the right thing.

ABC Nightline: The Atheist and Her Brain - Margaret Downey

berticus says...

@Boise_Lib, the article is a springboard to other articles.

You claimed that there are no scientific studies suggesting that an NDE can be the result of biological reactions which help the body to cope. This is demonstrably untrue. The section on endorphins—which also mentions serotonin and NMDA—has multiple references alone. Note that I am not saying these studies explain NDEs entirely—just that they exist. The hypothesis is a relatively old one.

The only conclusions I make regarding NDEs are that they are complex, poorly understood, difficult to study, and almost certainly nothing to do with an afterlife. It also makes for a fucking excellent piece of fiction!

This isn't a coincidence. People go to this type of service and heavy metal concerts for the same reason and get the same high from it.
I never would have thought of making a mashup to point this out. Good job!

I haven't thought of it that way but you are so right. Both seek that high, that rush of endorphins and adrenaline. It isn't the rush of 'gods presence' it's the rush of chemicals to the brain.

Homeopathic A&E - Mitchell & Webb

It's obvious you're niether a medical professional nor have ever had acupuncture. So keep trying to make sense by agreeing that it works but not to your satisfaction... how would YOU know?

This sounds pretty plausible to me, rather than the rantings of some random idiot.

It's not based on smoke and mirrors, and spirits and "humours"... but results.. and results are results. Everyone's body is different, and we dont even fully know how it all works yet. I'm not going to get acupuncture but i'm not going to rule it out because you're being a spaz.

----------------------------------

Several processes have been proposed to explain acupuncture's effects, primarily those on pain. Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals either change the experience of pain or release other chemicals, such as hormones, that influence the body's self-regulating systems. The biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.13 There are three main mechanisms:

Conduction of electromagnetic signals: Western scientists have found evidence that acupuncture points an strategic conductors of electromagnetic signals. Stimulating points along these pathways through acupuncture enables electromagnetic signals to be relayed at it greater rate than under normal conditions. These signals may start the flow of pain-killing biochemicals such as endorphins and of immune system cells to specific sites that are injured or vulnerable to disease.14,15

Activation of opioid systems: research has found that several types of opioids may be released into the central nervous system during acupuncture treatment, thereby reducing pain.16

Changes in brain chemistry sensation, and Involuntary body functions: studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones in a good way. Acupuncture also has been documented to affect the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processes whereby a person's blood pressure, blood flow, and body temperature are regulated.3,17,18

It sounds to me like a very refined method of manipulating bio chemistry. I suppose you think meditation and exercise are useless as well. Stay in school.

Only now do I behold the true awesomeness of cat farts. You are honestly a visionary. I don't know if I ever laughed this much at any action of my own. Oh goodness, there's only so many things one can say/do to entertain themselves as much as posting videos of farting felines on the net.

Wow.

Now that the endorphin/adrenaline rush is almost over, I am kind of sorry for posting such a reply to a serious post, but I just had this sudden feeling that I needed to do something rather absurd. I'm quite sure you know what I mean.

P.S. I know you'll tell me to stop hitting on you in a gay manner, but to be fair, you just can't blame a heterosexual male for a perfectly natural desire to suck your big, throbbing cock and swallow your hot sperm.

The Atheist Experience: Pascals Wager

MINK says...

the prefix a- in atheism seems to denote opposition to the idea that god exists. I am sorry if I got the wrong idea there, perhaps you guys should rebrand, because even the definition of the word "atheism" is now being brought into the debate.

By some definitions, I am also "atheist".

The flying pink unicorn argument is a classic example of atheists reducing a complex intangible feeling into a ridiculous canard in order to try to make agnostics seem unintelligent. Fuck that one. I don't think hijackers get to fuck virgins, and if you want to believe in the flying pink unicorn then i would be interested to hear why. For a laugh. I think comparing the idea of God to a flying pink unicorn is just juvenile, and demonstrates an excessive faith in logic to solve all problems.

I don't think humans run on logic. Therefore I shy away from using pure logic to explain concepts such as soul or universe or heaven. So did the Bible. Unfortunately modern people try to interpret the Bible with logic, and then they find it is illogical and go around the internet saying "therefore it is wrong and you are foolish"

Some people seem obsessed by learning exactly what "reality" is.
I am not so obsessed. I came to the conclusion that I haven't even seen one speck of reality and this whole thing is just a fucking "illusion" which science can't explain to me. To attempt to understand it is futile. I am not the guy to find the answer. I think i am closest to god when i play music. To you it's just endorphins or something in my blood, but i find that a totally unsatisfactory explanation. I don't even want or need an explanation.

What is more, my belief that "magic" or "god" or "fairies" exist makes complete sense to me, and helps me understand what I want to do in my life. Your obsession with being "correct" just amuses me, because you're never going to get there, and you have absolutely no authority to tell me how to think about spiritual matters.

But it's interesting talking to half of you. Thanks

^ You may be oversimplifying a bit. You could also say sex is just an endorphin high. Conversely one might argue that sex is a series of intimate physical expressions of love. Maybe how you look at it determines what you're going to get out of the experience (both in watching the video and with sex in general).
