So We’re All In Agreement

newtboy says...

It’s not bizarre when you remember that Republicans have become pathological liars who know the policies they actually work for are not supported by their base so they simply lie about their clear written plans and people like Bob eat it up with a spoon.
As you note, their silence or even approval when Scott and Lee put their plans to kill social security, Medicare, and Medicaid on the table proves they weren’t a bit upset at the idea to kill these social programs, they were upset at their clearly written and stated party plans being stated publicly.

I find it so bizarre that it went down this way. If the bulk of congressional Rs don't like the idea of having Social Security and Medicare sunset, maybe they should have been vocal in pushing back on Rick Scott's proposal? Their relative silence on that front effectively proved Biden's original point, so to react so strongly to his statement seems silly. But then, the party stopped behaving seriously years ago, opting for culture war nonsense over actual impactful policy.

Fox Talks About FBI Raid Looking For Classified Documents

newtboy says...

Good comment. Points out how cultists don’t let facts get in the way of their accusations no matter what, no matter how many partisan and bipartisan committees and government agencies clear her, no matter how many hundreds of millions are wasted repeatedly investigating the same things over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over….finding nothing at all, nada, zip, zilch, nothing burgers royal with cheese.

What “things” did “Dems” do? They didn’t steal classified documents…although Republicans accused them of it and held numerous hearings which Dems participated and testified in…and were cleared. They didn’t expose top secret information, although republicans accused them of it and held multiple hearings that Dems participated and testified in…and were cleared. They didn’t refuse to turn over those stolen, unsecured state secrets for 6 months (because they never stole any).

You’re so delusional you still chant “lock her up” but don’t have a clue for what anymore, and chant “nothing burger” when Trump admits to the exact crimes you accused Clinton of but then exonerated her of because the accusations were false.

Not watching one second of that idiot blowhard Gutfeld….I’m dumber for having read his name, he’s such an information vacuum that just mentioning him makes a person less informed. No surprise he’s a trusted source for you…like Beck and Jones…all admitted liars and frauds that lie for your money…and you eat it up like poo pie….just begging for more turd tarts.

Sidney Powell, according to reports admitted during her deposition that she also didn't bother to check and see if any of this stuff was true, because she felt according to what it says in this deposition, that the truth wasn't material to the inquiry.
Why did you not ask to provide a statement, correcting the misstatements that you had reported?
SP-That didn't seem to be the material part of the inquiry.
So she admits that she made these claims. She admitted that she had no evidence to back them up and then was asked, “okay. But then you knew they were false. Why didn't you go out there and correct the record? “
SP- “That didn’t seem material.”

They’ve admitted now that they just saw people putting unverified nonsense on Facebook and that's where they got it from. And they didn't vet it. They didn't research it. They didn't fact check any of it, both Giuliani and Sidney Powell admitted that in their depositions. Wasn’t their job to make sure what they claimed on national tv had any basis in reality, they say.
In fact, once it was proven that their claims were false, they still never went out and retracted any of their frivolous, baseless, impossible, nonsense accusations, just like you, buddy. They just moved on to the next lie they found on Facebook and never looked back. That’s why you believe the utter bullshit you believe, Bob. Because people like this, under Trump’s direction, lie to you and you eat it up and ask for more, even when they tell you directly under oath that it’s all made up fantasy with no basis in fact or reality and is often completely impossible because the people involved have been dead for decades and because Italian space lasers can’t actually change paper ballots ….you still believe it, or pretend to which is worse.

Trump Is Losing the Shutdown Fight: A Closer Look

RFlagg says...

I don't get how Trump and the GOP say the Democrats need to be willing to negotiate. They are offering $1.6 Billion in additional funding. But Trump is acting like Veruca Salt, and stomping his feet, saying he wants $5.7 Billion, and he wants it now. That's not how negotiations work. You want $5.7, they offer $1.6, you come down to say $4.6, they come back at $2.3, you come back with $4 and permanent residence status for Dreamers, they come back with $3 and permanent resident status, then you meet at $3.5 and permanent resident status. You don't just keep acting like a child throwing a temper tantrum and demanding the $5.7, and if you don't get it, the other side is the one's being unreasonable.

The "Pro-life" party, that loves the death penalty and war, so not really pro-life at all, is now holding millions of Americans (800k, plus their families, plus the millions of people who depend on those services) hostage in an act of economic terrorism, until the other side fully caves into their demands. They are the ones not willing to negotiate, but are doing some 1984 level doublespeak, and blaming it all on the Democrats. And the Fox News types are eating it up, which is probably why Trump thinks he's winning. "Just look. Steve says I'm doing good and that all real Americans support me."

They need to pass a law, that Congress, their aids and staff, the President, their aids and staff, the White House aids and staff... all don't get paid on any shutdown. If they've already given up their salary (I love how Trump followers commend Trump for giving up his salary, while ignoring he makes more a year off the Secret Service than he would in years of salary) then they have to reimburse that salary they would have made in that time. Congress and the President may not take back pay, and it takes a 60% vote to authorize the aids and staff back pay, but only if all other Federal workers also get their back pay first in a separate and prior authorization.

Canada's new anti-transphobia bill

dannym3141 says...

Sounds like an exercising in rearranging the furniture on the Titanic to me.

In a world where discrimination and separatism is qualitatively and quantitatively on the rise, people in charge must be ecstatic that they can appease people without having to do anything meaningful that might piss off the extremists on the right, or "shareholders". And people are so used to being told that change is only possible through incremental adjustments that they'll eat it up like candy and think this is progress.

"People people people, if you're going to call someone a filthy tranny and throw fast food at xem on public transport, at least use the proper pronoun when you verbally abuse xem."

When there's a hole in the boat and you're taking on water, the least of your concerns should be about what language you use to describe the in-rushing water or shape of the hole, nor arguing over the colour of the material you use to repair it.

I'm sure some people will see this as a victory. Until next time they apply for a job and not get hired due to transphobia. And the manager of the company, with a gleam in their eye, begins the rejection letter with 'Dear bun/bunself', then sniggers to themselves and says "fucking trannies."

What I'm trying to say was summed nicely in a tweet i saw the other day:
ALTRIGHT/NEO NAZI: your all going to the gas chambers!!!
NEOLIBERAL: you're*

If this is the extent of what activism is able to achieve, i should say that the establishment/elite have won by pacifying and declawing the protesters. It's no longer about breaking the shackles of oppression. We can't go around breaking shackles everywhere - think of the effect on the economy? And what about people getting hit by shrapnel? No, instead the LGBTQ community will be given multi coloured chains, the black community will be given slightly longer chains, and we'll pad the shackles with silk so that everyone is much more comfortable. Don't complain about the concept of being chained, instead complain that your chain is not as nice as the next guy's chain.

It's as though the great struggle of protest and civil disobedience has been taken over by the liberal intelligentsia, and the worst kind of discrimination faced by a 20 year old middle-class university student with rainbow coloured dreadlocks and a nose piercing is the letter they receive about their student loan that begins "dear sir/madam". So they go out and march about it and think they've made progress when they get their own pronoun. In their life, in their experiences, they are treated equally in other respects, so they think they ARE fighting inequality.

But for the working class male or female transsexual who gets filthy looks and a seat isolated by themselves on public transport, to travel to their entry level job where they've been skipped over for promotion for not looking the part, or getting the right level of respect from the trans-phobic staff, getting snide whispered comments from customers about the size of their hands, getting abuse yelled at them as they travel to have a night out at the ONLY trans-friendly bar within a 20 mile radius....... I get the feeling that receiving a letter with the correct pronoun isn't exactly going to change their fucking lives.

To remove a weed, you go for the roots. Some wanker calling you him/her when you prefer bun/bunself is not the root of this problem. The problem is that they are trans-phobic, not the language - which is just the tool they use to discriminate against you. To change the language and think that you've won is a bit like redefining room temperature and claiming you've warmed everybody by a few degrees.

If you march for equal rights, fair pay, fair treatment then people are going to see that and join your protest because they also want those things. Those things will solve the problems faced by the trans community, feminists, masculinists, minorities alike! And through common goals and by supporting each other en masse for simple, unified goals like EQUALITY, progress will be made, change will happen. It is a concept called solidarity and seems to be going out of fashion, but our grandparents knew.

The objective for the establishment is to drive a wedge between groups of people so that their demands are more manageable, and they can be turned on each other. Feminists, masculinists, LGBT, everyone... can't you see how better off you'd be marching together for common values that lie at the core of what every human wants?

Wall of text, sorry... and I know it looks like i'm being insensitive. So congratulations, genuinely, for getting someone to use your preferred pronoun if that makes you feel better. But whilst people have been fighting tooth and nail to get their own pronoun (in civilised settings only), we've suffered huge leaps backwards in freedom and tolerance behind their backs whilst they were bent over intently concentrating on the finer detail of what their ideal equality looks like.

Senator Warren Destroys Wells Fargo CEO Over Cross Selling

SDGundamX says...

Awesome comment. I wish I could upvote it twice. I threw up a little in my mouth watching the grandstanding going on here and how apparently most Sifters are eating it up.

Fraud? Cross-selling is perfectly legal and in fact practiced regularly in many industries besides banking (like when Best Buy tries to get you to purchase a protection plan for any electronics you buy at their store). If she has an issue with it, as a legislator she is free to bring a bill to the floor to do something about it. The problem is, she didn't give a shit about cross-selling until she realized she was going to have an opportunity to stump for future votes in these hearings and she apparently doesn't give a shit about it now because despite those strong-worded pleas for action she's done nothing personally to make anything she said happen.

Stumpf should give up his money? He isn't the one who opened fake Wells Fargo accounts nor is there any evidence he directed his employees to do so. And as he tried to explain before she cut him off to grandstand some more, those fake accounts only represent 1% of the total cross-selling that happened, which means the stock price was not unduly inflated--people were in fact opening of their own volition more accounts with Wells Fargo than any other bank and Wall Street loved them for it.

The real issue here is that there were not adequate controls in place to prevent the fake accounts from being created in the first place (or detected quickly after being created). And for that Stumpf probably does have some small amount of responsibility, although it sounds to me more like whoever was in charge of compliance is the person who likely should be the one left holding the bag.

But let's not let reality get in the way of a politician's dreams of future offices.

It should matter more that she's not actually doing anything here, but judging by the comments she doesn't have to bother.

Samantha Bee on Orlando - Again? Again.

Mordhaus says...

True, the constitution has some screwed up parts. However, there is a process in place to make or change amendments. If the bulk of the United States decides to repeal the 2nd Amendment, using the methods in place to do so, so be it. I'd give my guns up in that case. If the legislature decides to pass an unconstitutional law as a knee jerk reaction to a terrorist act, then they aren't getting them. The problem with unconstitutional laws, by the way, is that SCOTUS can always wink at the bill of rights and say that it is constitutional. I don't care for that, but again, it is a legal interpretation of the document if they do it. I'd give up my guns if that happened.

I don't even really have an issue if we go back to the assault weapon ban of the 90's. I get that we can make some changes and cut down on these incidents. I'm just extremely leery of package deals like lets ban everyone who ends up on a list from having weapons based on a government decision. You give someone due process to avoid being on the list, like we do to people accused of felonies before they are convicted, no problem. But as it stands, our President is just tossing an idea out there that absolutely violates multiple rights and people are eating it up like it was candy.

Oh slippery slope... same document used to give people the RIGHT to own other humans...

Oh slipper slope... the RIGHT to vote is clearly intended for white men and land owners only.

etc... etc... seems like we're up to like 27 HEINOUS infringements on YOUR rights by now.!

Its absolutely utterly fucking ridiculous. The entire country is held hostage from even discussing the issue. The government isn't even allowed to collect data.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/04/us/gun-violence-graphics/

We are the ONLY ones doing this at anywhere even close to this rate. And we can't even discuss potential solutions rationally without it being turned into some paranoid hypothetical tyrannical enslavement scenario.

Its fucking pathetic. So yeah... your right lets not even make a fucking attempt at solving our issues.

Megyn Kelly on Fox: "Some things do require Big Brother"

eoe says...

This will undoubtedly stir up a flame war, because it touches upon one of the forbidden topics, but what the hell:

Although there is, indeed, not a vaccination for heart diseases, a plant-based diet, across the board, in studies since, like, the 70s have shown that it basically heart-disease proofs you, not to mention diabetes.

Here's a long 53 minute video that goes over the basics, but the entire webpage has a little under 2,000 videos with a bunch of stats, papers, meta-studies, etc.

In a lot of ways, heart disease is very preventable, and even reversible in some cases, if you stop eating so much damn meat.

But, as stated above, "not eating meat" or "don't tell me what I can and cannot eat!" is up there with religion as far as topics that people get super-defensive about.

It's up you, truly, to determine what's more important: health or food deliciousness. And some people, knowingly, choose food deliciousness. And bless them. You make your own choices.

But also bless them for our ridiculous health care costs.

I'm 39 the only vaccine I ever got was polio as a child as my grandfather died of polio when my mom was 18.

My mom refused the rest , when I was 4 I went to a measles and chicken pox party and gained immunity that way. Parties like that was huge in late 70s.

But I'm 39, never had mumps, chicken pox, etc anything other than bad back and heart disease which runs in the male side of family, had heat attack at 30, I've made it 9 years so far with stints in chest. But all the men die in late 50s to mid 60s on the paternal side to heart disease.

No vaccine for that

Only vaccine my son has had was polio. He's in a private school

How Oreo Cookies Are Made

Michaldaruk says...

Oreos have always been my favorite cookie. Did you know that they've been the best selling cookie in the US since they were first introduced in 1912? Everyone has different tastes but my preference is a sandwich cookie. They're fun to eat. Lift up the top wafer and lick the creamy middle, or dunk them in a glass of milk. I don't find them bland at all, if anything too sweet. What do you mean by dry? Because the wafer part is crunchy? Crunching on them is part of their appeal.
