I've next to no experience with Macs and OSX, but plenty with networked groups. I have to point out that what service or product you need, depends a great deal on precisely what you mean when you say "access the same files". If you mean "read the same files", then dropbox should work fine. If you intend to have multiple people editing the same file at the same time, you might have problems with that approach (such as overwriting each other's changes). Then you'll want to look at something like a real source control system (think Subversion, Perforce, etc).

THANK YOU.

Forget all that brouhaha. DropBox is the perfect solution and it works on all platforms (even Droid and iPhone).

It just installs a folder on your computer that is synchronized every other place you have your DropBox account setup. For example, you have a folder like "dropbox/our_files/" filled with a bunch of files you need to share. Your compatriots across the globe install DropBox and they have the same "our_files" directory on their computers. Any time you or any of them add a file to the folder, it automagically appears in the same folder on everyone else's computer. Likewise, any time you delete a file, it disappears from everyone else's computer.

It's a pretty great service and starts with 2GB free (you can upgrade to 50GB for $10/mo). Either all of the other users can install DropBox and login with your credentials -or- you can create your shared folder and just share it with select individuals (and it will be sync'd in their own DropBox folders).

Dropbox is great for free online backup & file syncing (Geek Talk Post)

Do you ever think their pricing is a bit off? There must be lots of 2GB accounts and I find that sufficient for my purposes which covers work, key personal files and images. I don't have everything on dropbox of course but then I wouldn't stick my music on there (and there's probably something in the T&Cs about that I bet) or ripped videos.

I'm just surprised that for such a useful service that they don't charge for the basic service. The first payable package is Pro 50 which is nearly $120 per year. And finally Pro 100 is $240 per year. Those are big jumps. I can see room for a lower starting price for say 10GB and add a secure file delivery service as a premium feature (I often have to send files to clients).

And with referrals you can get up to 8GB free. I just hope they know what they're doing as it really is a service I cannot do without.

Need a bit of advice for data recovery services *URGENT* (Geek Talk Post)

Like I said on facebook, I've had some experience with this.

The drive is obviously dead, but if you're lucky you can sneak out stuff between break-downs. I found that taking the harddisk out, while connected and simply whacking it a little on the side, have jilted it back into action for a few minutes.

Connect it to another computer that boots on another drive and be sure beforehand what you need off the quesionable drive, then you should surgically and precisely go after the most precious data first, because once the drive really goes, it's lost - unless you want to pay upwards of several thousand dollars to get the data at a data recovery site. It should only start clicking when it's read for a little while, the reason it does it when you boot, is because it starts reading off the disk then and the stuff it needs to boot might be all over the platter, so it starts skipping. (It's the servo arm for the reading head that's going when it clicks.)

I lost most of my high school work this way, which is why I use several drives and dropbox for my important stuff now.

Yeah, I love dropbox too. Use it on my Macs - AND iPhone, with the web interface, it basically works anyplace you can get on the net. Very good service.

As I know nothing about Macs I'm not able to offer anything useful for your predicament - but I hope it has a happy ending - however once she's up and running again get her to use dropbox - https://www.dropbox.com/.

The files are still on the Mac but are then automatically backed up to the site and can also be synched with another computer. Very convenient when working on multiple pcs or just a very effective backup. It also stores different versions of the files it backs up and you can roll back - very cool.

Dropbox is really nice, but if you need more space the pricing may be too steep. (2GB free, 50GB for $9.99/mo.) As such, it's more of a file sharing service.

Personally, I'm sticking with regular backups to external drive. Several hundred gigabytes of stuff is a little rough for on-line storage.
