Enhancing photorealism in video games

Khufu says...

while this is cool, it's really just forcing a specifically art-directed look of the game(texture detail, color grading) into a dashcam-quality, drab color-scheme version. The game was obviously going for a more film-inspired color grading meant to give you the impression of a hot summer day in LA, not a cold German day seen through a raw ccd limited dashcam. cool that it's this fast though!

just saw the bit at the end with the broader dataset used.. that's more like it, keeps the vibrant color but does improve realism of things like road look.

Meanwhile in Kazan Airport, Russia

noims says...

Incidentally, for those interested, Russian newspapers are reporting that the driver was fleeing the police a few days ago and ended up cornered in the airport. That's when this video started.

He did a reported 6,000,000 rubles damage (almost 100k in USD or EUR) since he damaged the heating system.

The video of the leadup is at the end of this article, but seems so drab without Yakety Sax:

Our Greatest Delusion As Humans - Veritasium

Babymech says...

I think he misses the point that the rest of us already thought all of this through when we were twelve, and realized that our most perfect existence, our highest quality of life, would be attained by living drab, ordinary, miserable and lonely lives, clinging to convention and constantly complaining about it but doing nothing. We're already living the dream, and he's late to this party!

As Huxley said, "It is possible to make people contented with their servitude. I think this can be done. I think it has been done in the past, but then I think it could be done even more effectively now because you can provide them with breads and circuses and you can provide them with endless distractions and propaganda."
@StukaFox
Your comment is as clever as it is simpleminded. You can worship the elephant or the donkey and I'll disagree with you based on the zeal you have for one and the disdain for the other. The world is a complicated place and whats best isn't found in one camp or the other.
Look at Huxley's last novel Island. He merges 'East and West'. He takes what he feels is best from both.

I upvoted because my reaction to this is that we've ended up in a world a lot closer to Aldous Huxley's shiny, distracted, and soul suckingly disconnected dystopia than we have 1984's drab, brutal, overtly totalitarian one. Our dystopia is much harder to break out of, because on the surface it seems open, free, and filled with prosperity, until you scratch the surface, and see the rot festering underneath.

I could've just as easily have downvoted for the stupidity of your pox upon both their houses view of modern politics though. I don't really get the sense much of anyone on the left is filled with some sort of "zeal" for the "donkey" -- and the disdain for the Republicans largely stems from the way they seem to be functionally identical to the Inner Party members from 1984. They can shamelessly go from lauding an individual mandate as the "personal responsibility principle that's essential to bring costs down" and then when the party's needs change, decry the same policy as somehow being a violation of everything that Americans hold sacred. All this while demanding they still be treated as if they were serious people of conviction and principle, and painting those who dare to point out their hypocrisy as some sort of dishonest partisan hack.

The fact that one side, and only one side has fully committed to this level of partisan loyalty should make even the most cynical, above the fray, non-partisan person sit up and take notice. Maybe it's time to stop pretending this is politics as usual, and see it for what it really is: a battle to stop a group of committed fanatics without a shred of human empathy from pushing out the last vestiges of the flawed, inept, but well-meaning opposition standing in their way.

I've always liked the phrase 'music is the expression of the soul'. I think it answers that question rather well.
Wonderful video, was having a rather drab day, and now my mood is much improved. Loved the chello at the start, it's my all time favorite instrument and I rue that I never learned to play it.

Duke Nukem Forever Quicklook (yes it does suck that much)

grahamslam says...

As far as Diakatana goes, that is why I think it was a good game, because I remember it and I remember enjoying a lot of parts. I played through at least twice, the second time using just the daikatana (for the most part) because if you remember, the more you used it the more powerful it became. It was fun smashing through hordes of enemies with a powerful sword. The other weapons were good and varied. You could also level up your attributes as you went along. The mythical greece and midieval norway levels were beautiful imo. It was like 4 smaller games rolled into one. Once the patch was out, your teammates didn't get in the way and sometimes helped out. The voice acting was more stereotypical versus actually racist and I think they were trying to inject some humor into it. There were a lot of secret areas to be found. I could go on, but thats enough about diakatana.

I found some positive reviews about Duke Nukem Forever so it's not all bad reviews: (these seem more like my experiences)

And I think I was grumpy because I had a reaction to a wasp sting on my wrist which swelled up my hand and wrist bad enough I had to go to the hospital that day. I also couldn't play any more Duke

You know, I can tell you that the fundamental thing that comes to mind about Daikatana was that it was entirely forgettable. I've been an avid gamer since BEFORE the Commodore 64, I've played the greats and I think back to games which were contemporaries of Daikatana, say Deus Ex and I can tell you every last detail about that game. Now, if you ask me about Planescape: Torment, another game that predates Daikatana, I can go on and on about why that game was amazing. Despite having played through all of Daikatana, all I have in my mind is the vague impression of a horribly put together game, poor (and arguably racist) voice acting, terribly outdated graphics for when it was released, drab design, unimaginative writing and a lot of broken promises.
What I mean by that last part was that there was a LOT that was promised in the development of the game that never happened. What was it? I can't remember worth a damn and that's the point. It was a minor blip that didn't live up to 1/10th of what John Romero promised and it certainly didn't make me his bitch.
I get what you are trying to say about Duke though. Hell, I even agree that it is something we NEED to play. But after watching videos and reviews, I really don't think it is a fluke that it is coming in at 40/50% reviews (at best). Like I said in another post, that moment where they compare Duke to that annoying uncle you thought was hilarious when you were 8, but now just see as sad and really unimaginative.
Again, I'll stand by Gearbox as well. We all wanted to see this mess and they did the work to bring it to us.
As for feeling like Mr. Grumpypants, no worries, I think DNF has made us ALL Mr. Grumpypants this week.

Sorry Graham, but you had me until you defended Daikatana... Daikatana was horrible horrible horrible. In every way possible. Patch or no patch it was an embarrassment.
I will play DNF on my PC, but I'm going to wait till the price comes down (which I would give 3-5 weeks). No way am I paying $50 for this, history or no...

Explain to me why Daikatana was horrible in your opinion?
Price for a game is a matter of economics, not a matter of how good the game is or is not which is why I hate when people rate it according to price. Sure price can be an indicator of value, but if duke was priced at 10 bucks, would it all of a sudden be a 10 out of 10 game? No, but you would be happier you got to play the game for less money. If you had millions in the bank, you would probably care less if you paid $50 or $20 for the game, you just want to know how damn good the game is.
I understand your intention was just to simply say the game doesn't interest you at full price. The rant was just directed at the idiots who score games low because they didn't like it being released at full price. I think I need some sleep, I'm being mr grumpy pants.

Those graphics do suck -- not enough dynamic range, not enough stabilization, drab textures.

Future FPS will look more like Hollywood, and less like crappy cell phone video (which I know this wasn't, but somehow it looks terrible).

Inception Characters Don't Understand Inception

NetRunner says...

>> ^budzos:

I dunno. I consider myself a real Nolan fan, yet I never liked Memento, and don't rate Inception extremely high either. I feel both movies focus far too much on mechanics. Now that it's been a couple weeks my memory of Inception is a lot like this clip... people explaining shit to each other for two hours.

I kinda felt this way about Inception too. It felt like it was the dramatic conclusion of a trilogy, except for budget reasons they never made the first two films, and therefore were forced to explain a huge amount of the universe's mechanics through exposition.

That, and I wondered why so much of the action was utterly conventional fistfights, gunplay, and car chases, and not nearly so much about the really wacky kinds of things a dream world can do.

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus was a lot more in line with what I would expect a dream world to look like. In Inception, it seemed so dreadfully drab and realistic, like it was the Matrix, not a dream world.

Who let the clowns out?

silly sally productions should think what they are doing a couple times over before intravenously injecting their drab bullshit into the Internets. That people, in my opinion was horrible. It left me with a gritty feeling in my teeth of " hit the bitch with the yellow curly head of hair"
