Christopher Hitchens: No Deathbed Conversion for Me, Thanks.

shuac says...

Anyone have any idea what his last words truly were? That kind of thing isn't normally reported so soon after but I'd like to know.

I always like to recall the last words of Oscar Wilde or at least, his alleged last words:

Bedridden with cerebral meningitis in Paris, he took note of the unsatisfactory decor of the room and said, "Either this wallpaper goes or I do."

Skeeve says...

A bit late on the draw here, but if those military databases don't pan out, maybe post some of this guy's claims here. There are a few of us here that could probably spot a Walter Mitty based on where he served, when, what decorations he has, etc.

A lot of military forums have a thread or two about this as well. They should have tips for spotting an impostor and would be even better at verifying claims (forums.military.com has some particularly good threads about this).

I'd be interested to hear how this pans out. There are few things that bother military types as much as a poser claiming to be one of us.>> ^MycroftHomlz:

So far I have nothing. I can't find anything about him on the ship he says he was on. And I cant find him on any of the military websites. So either I have his last name wrong, the databases are incomplete, or he is lying.

MarineGunrock says...

The easiest way is to ask him if he has any pictures from his unit. That's just something you can't fake. He still may be lying about decorations and awards received, though. Guys who lie about medals and ribbons usually haven't served and they're easier to catch, but sometimes real vets will lie about shit like that to seem cooler.

Still, I wish people who wish to protest something wouldn't pick a pop-culture reference to represent themselves. They should represent who they are, not some icon the media made popular. It really degrades the whole message they want to spread.

They are legion... ; )

Heheh, maybe if everyone dressed up like Natalie Portman.

When the people who are the intended recipients of the protesters message see this though, they probably can't take it seriously. "Oh look, the masses are decorating themselves like a film character". The superficiality of its origins comes forward more readily than the intended symbolic attachment behind it. It would be more effective to find some emotional, poignant symbolism that represents, and is unique to, the movement and message at large.

The only "sock puppets" I see here are those who resort to name calling (instead of rational arguments) to defend this millionaire rockstar physicist.

He carried on banging hot chicks and writing best-selling books long after he murdered those people. Obviously that guilt really put a cramp in his style.

NORAD on 9/11: What was the U.S. military doing that day?

marbles says...

The government could have intercepted the hijacked planes had they followed standard protocols.

From http://www.911summary.com/:

Director of the U.S. "Star Wars" space defense program in both Republican and Democratic administrations, who was a senior air force colonel who flew 101 combat missions (Col. Robert Bowman) stated that 9/11 was an inside job. He also said:

"If our government had merely [done] nothing, and I say that as an old interceptor pilot—I know the drill, I know what it takes, I know how long it takes, I know what the procedures are, I know what they were, and I know what they’ve changed them to—if our government had merely done nothing, and allowed normal procedures to happen on that morning of 9/11, the Twin Towers would still be standing and thousands of dead Americans would still be alive. [T]hat is treason!" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMYzwf01Z7I)

U.S. Army Air Defense Officer and NORAD Tac Director, decorated with the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Soldiers Medal (Capt. Daniel Davis) stated:

"there is no way that an aircraft . . . would not be intercepted when they deviate from their flight plan, turn off their transponders, or stop communication with Air Traffic Control ... Attempts to obscure facts by calling them a 'conspiracy Theory' does not change the truth. It seems, 'Something is rotten in the State.' "

Richard Dawkins Promotes Teaching Religion in School

Shepppard says...

I actually took Religion in High School. It was an interesting class to say the least, but didn't sway my opinions on anything religion wise.

In fact, it was one of my reasons for becoming an Atheist. It's where I found out that Jesus wasn't the first "Miraculous" birth, in fact, Zoroaster and Buddha were also born in the exact same fashion.

My favourite part of the class, however, was the field trip. We went to three places, a Hindu temple, a Mosque, and a Buddhist temple.

Hindu temple and Mosque were interesting, but nothing special. The Buddhist temple though was nifty, I walked into the main hall and there were 3 giant golden Buddha statues there, with thousands of candles lit around the room. I was amazed by this, and eager to learn about it expecting our tour guide to be a monk of sorts.

Turns out he was a little middle-aged white guy, who turned out to be a dick. When asked "Why did you become a Buddhist?" we all expected some result that included soul searching, or because of it's outlook on everything. The exact answer we got was "Well, my friends were something different, so I decided to be different, too."

Needless to say, by the end of our tour, none of us were too impressed with this guy. Chinese new years was coming up so they showed us the basement that was being decorated in silks and lanterns, and looked pretty cool. The guide asked us "So, any of you know how to say 'Happy new year' in Chinese?" with a slight smirk on his face.

I looked him square in the eye and said "Happy new year in Chinese."

That's when we got kicked out of the temple.

Worth it.

The Secret Bookstore - Guerrilla Book Selling Tactics

EMPIRE says...

This in some way reminds of my own situation. I had a comic book store. From 2007 to 2009 I was the co-owner and co-clerk of the only comic book shop my city ever had. It was a great store. Big area, great decor, but unfortunately we just never sold as much as we hoped, and by early 2009 I turned to my associate and said: "Well.. either we close the store or I keep it going alone (I had invested a lot more money than he had) in a new, smaller, cheaper place and try to make things work". So by the summer of 2009 I was in the new, much cheaper, much smaller location. If I had managed to keep the same volume of sales as in the previous store, I would be fine. Unfortunately, things never go as you plan, and in the summer of 2010, I closed down for good.
Now I basically sell comics from my house, by catalog, to a few of the old clients who still want to. I don't really make any money from it. I get the chance to order a book for myself every now and then, and if I make 70€ of profit every month, it's a lot.
So yeah...

From Wiki:
"The lodge was constructed between 1936 and 1938 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression. Workers used large timbers and local stone, and placed intricately carved decorative elements throughout the building."

If you ever go there, I really recommend the tour. All these Old World craftspeople, out of work due to the Great Depression -- they poured all the love of their craft into this place.

Why is government... (Blog Entry by blankfist)

blankfist says...

>> ^NetRunner:

>> ^blankfist:
To extend your metaphor, the expensive steak restaurant down the street decided to shove their low quality steak down your throat and charge you for the prime filet mignon. Sure, you weren't hungry and didn't even ask for the steak, but now you have to pay for it. And they want to write down what you've eaten.

But that's not what happened. You moved to California. You got a dog. You weren't forced to do either of those things.
Metaphorically, that's walking into the steakhouse, and ordering a steak, and now you're refusing to pay the price on the menu.
Your reasoning? You think the decor they chose for the restaurant is more expensive than you think it should've been, the heating/cooling system was too expensive, their waiters have health care benefits that you think are too generous, and you think rather than buying their meat from a sustainable farm, they should buy their meat from some factory farm, and therefore you feel you shouldn't be "forced" to pay for things you didn't personally choose.
Except, you chose to come into the steakhouse, and ordered a steak from them...

No, to extend your metaphor again, you chose to walk down the street and they shoved a crappy piece of steak in your gullet and forced you to swallow. You also chose to be alive on that day, so they fed you. Then you refused to pay filet mignon prices.

See how stupid that line of reasoning sounds? That's how I feel whenever someone says "You chose to live in this country/state" and "if you don't like it, move!". It's like telling blacks to move out if they don't like the burning cross in front of their house. Essentially this is the statist equivalent of Godwin's Law, but way, way, way worse. And ends the discussion for me.
