Orangutan Cools Off (or Opposable Thumbs are Cool)

ponceleon says...

Well, you should explain yourself as I do... this is EIA in every sense of the term! Awesomeness is naturally selected FOR and lives on!

It's too bad the EIA channel can't be applicable here.
Because this orangutan is moving the other way in evolution than the the other idiots on that channel!

We really should have a channel called evolution.

You guys don't understand EIA. EIA doesn't mean the person has to do something stupid or die. If someone does something awesome, lives to tell about it and has offspring who then go on to be awesome that is ALSO EIA. Therefore, I invoke eia

I do understand what EIA means to me and obviously to you, however in the many times I have invoked EIA for similar videos, I have always gotten rejected saying that it's not what the channel on videosift is about.

Full Lyrics:

--Satori
Just gonna stand here
while you go dig
Im so angry
as you ride off on your pig
Just gonna build here
I'm doin' fine
It's allright because
I love the way you mine
Love the way you mine

--hojjoshmc
I can't tell you where the diamonds are
I can only tell you where they might be
But normally I have the best of luck around 16
I can't see, but I got my torchlight tonight
As long as I'm down here I know creepers could be in sight
know we should build, but it can wait, it's like I'm gonna faint
and I hate it, the more im down here, she suffocates
and right before I'm about to score a creeper locates me
he freakin hates me, but I saw em, wait
"Where you goin"
"im going back"
"No you ain't! Get back!"
I'm walking straight back, but here she's goes again
It's so mundane, but when the minin's good the minin's great
I'm on top of the world with the gems at my feet, she's praising me
But when it's bad its awful Man I'm so ashamed
She snaps, "I thought you found some, I don't see a grain"
I just looked at her, I told her I could mine some gems
I just gotta find em first and then...

You ever want some diamonds so bad
You can hardly think till you find em?
They're rare, and neither one of you ever even mined em
got that dark sinking feelin, that you always will be leaving
and she's getting really sick of building for ya
You swore you never leave her, never do nothing without her
Now you're fighting every day
Spewing items in their face that'll teach em
You yell, scream until you're red, jump spin
Kick em, but he's leaving to find diamonds in the morning just remember
It's the hunt that's the reason, it controls his mind
Friends say he's obsessed
They think you shouldn't stay
You say they don't know im
Cause today
Isn't yesterday
Today's almost over
and he's still away
sounds like the green record
playing over
But he promised you
This time he wont make you wait
You gave him another chance
I guess he respawned in the game
But he lied again
Now he gets to watch you leave out the server
Might never return again

--hojjoshmc
If only he could spawn things
Big things
Then he wouldn't leave
But still he goes back
Into the same mine and
mines it clean
But you're doing just as good
Without him
But it's you he needs
And when he comes back home
You are reminded
Man he wants you back
He just messaged you
"Honey it was me"
Maybe our new world
Has a lot more dangers than it seems
So I think I'll cool off
And I'll help you build something
All know is
our house is way too small
To be out spelunking
Get inside
Pick up your chest off the ground now
Don't you see me chasing down
this stupid little brown cow?
Here's some leather pants now
Defend me while I build now
Next time you leave
I'll set the spawn in the air now
Next time?
There won't be a next time
Giving up my mines
For ya But you know it's lies
You're tired of his lame
Excuses you're glad he's back
You know his dishonest
If he ever tries to leave to mine again
You're gon' throw him in the bed
And set this house on fire

--Satori

Brick Laying Machine

Ryjkyj says...

>> ^Porksandwich:

I've seen a few brick layers work while doing asphalt work off to the side. I was under the impression that a good brick design needs a layer of sand underneath and sand spread in between and over top of it to fill in voids. Where the sand in between is from the top and bottom layers of sand being shifted around as they place the bricks. Which doesn't appear to be happening here. So are there steps left out, or is this a "cheap" brick job versus someone who takes time to work the sand by hand to make them stable and last longer? And the machine loading and dropping like that is going to chip and break bricks more often as well...and cutting to fit patterns, etc is still manual.
Need more footage to see if this is an actual advancement or one of those machines that is trying to justify it's existence.

I know with asphalt the machine actually lays a better job than people can do by hand in the same time frame, but there's a lot of prep work to be ready for the machine and an hour or two of post work monitoring and rolling/compacting it when needed. Less time investment on the post work on highway jobs because they use low temperature material and it cools off much faster, and they tend to lay a lot of layers which cools off quicker because they aren't as thick.

I've laid a bit of brick in my time and I'm not sure one way or another if it's really an advancement. But I think the most important thing would be the surface you laid on. If it was sand/mortar/dirt that was also laid and leveled by machine then you'd get the job done in much less time. Having a level surface or adjusting the bricks one at time is probably the hardest part. You could then do the top layer of sand the old fashioned way. Pouring it on and sweeping off the excess doesn't take much time at all. As for the cuts. This is probably a pre-set pattern where the bricks are made to fit at the factory and sent out in the appropriate amounts.

It certainly is cool.

Southern Avenger - Are Tea Partiers Racist?

NetRunner says...

Here's something Lee Atwater, the architect of the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush campaigns and mentor to Karl Rove, said in 1981:

You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can't say “nigger” — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger.”

The idea is to package conservative ideas in such a way to attract racists, and provide them with a cover story so they have plausible deniability. In other words, so people like Southern Avenger here can claim "all they're doing is taking a principled stand based on their well-reasoned philosophy", even if they seem to be tolerating outrageously racist commentary and signage within their midst, and espousing a policy set that is generally condoned by racists due to its negative impact on non-whites.

These days it's less about racism per se, and more of a generalized form of xenophobia. It's the fear of people you don't know, don't understand, and who you don't want to have to care about or feel responsible for. It's why attempts to formally establish a legal responsibility to others (strangers!) are seen as intolerably intrusive.

Personally I think a lot of the rhetoric today is about dehumanizing the poor. It's often an expression of the belief that people who're poor have individually made some sort of choice that directly warrants things like losing their house, not having money for food, being unable to pay for medical care, etc. People who want on the government dime are all lazy leeches who're dragging all of society down, and if we give them help, they'll just stop trying to be productive, and try to leech more.

That started with racism, but I think just like the rhetoric, the emotional core got a lot more abstract -- it's not about demonizing black and brown people anymore, it's more about demonizing anyone who's different, so that the idea of having to take responsibility for them seems tyrannical.

I know that there's a huge percentage of moderately conservative people who don't buy into that emotional core, and want conservative-ish things done for pragmatic reasons. There's also a group of people who are True Believers, and think that the conservative ideology is morally superior to the alternatives, or that a libertarian policy set would benefit everyone greatly, even (especially?) the poor.

Those guys I like, and truly hope they find a way to purge the racists from their political organizations (i.e. the Tea Parties and the Republican party). That is, assuming they cool off on the calls for political violence (but that's a whole other conversation).

Building on what dft said, charges of racism wouldn't really stick if you guys stopped responded to it by saying "we condemn what you're talking about, and we'll take steps to ensure it doesn't happen again because racism won't be tolerated in our movement", instead of always saying "there's no racism here, and you're a racist for calling me a racist, racist!"

Should We Bring back the Siftquisition? (redux) (User Poll by dag)

schmawy says...

I like it. The two day "cooling off" period makes sense. I've always felt that the most important thing is a gradient of sentancing. No need for a binary ruling of ban / don't ban. I'm very comfortable with the idea of verdict by the group and sentancing determined by the admins benevolent dictatorship. I have great faith in Dag's judgement. He has earned this by exercising even handed and reluctant authority.

As for drama, there should be every bit of this (if not more) as there is in real life (sorry Sarz).

I've always felt that the Siftquisition was a good idea, but it lacked finesse and flexibility and judiciousness in execution. This seems to be a good answer.

I say again: VS is very unique in it's approach to community. I still believe that we are setting precidence for how people relate on the web. Maybe we're just a video posting site, but I still think there's something larger being worked out here.

Upvote for a shining example of why the DMCA is/was fucking retarded.
Despite the "penalties" for an inappropriate use of takedown notice, I don't think there has been a single case ever where this has been applied. There have been counter-claims used before to get the material posted back, but it seems to be a rare occurrence.
The problem lies within say YouTube taking the video down, and being required by the DMCA to keep it down for a peroid of time (a week?) for a DMCA counter-claim to be processed if necessary. Unless you kick and scream about it like this guy is doing, everyone forgets about it and moves on because of the cool off period. If it ever got past step 1, the amount of money involved to take someone to court over a misfiled claim would bankrupt most people. By then the culprit will just go "LOL, sorry" but the damage will already have been done.
In short, its an extremely easy way for corporations to censor because of this setup. You have almost zero options as the little guy (it was designed this way on purpose!) since YouTube (or any other hosting company) has to follow the DMCA no matter how bad the law is.
Whats even worse is when places outside the US comply to the DMCA blindly despite having no legal obligation to do so whatsoever. Disgusting.

Well said man, i've always had this problem about the legal system. It works the same way for big businesses etc. - you make them rich, then the moment you cross some vague line that cuts their profit by even a penny, they have a team of legal experts on hand which they don't have to pay extra for cos they're already on-hand. All they need to do is come and say something that sounds worrying to you, and you now have to either submit or spend your money to defend yourself when you may have done absolutely nothing wrong.

The legal system is absolutely fucked in this way - it benefits people with money. If you don't have it, you can't defend yourself from people who do; you either conform to their desires, or spend money to find out if they're even telling you the truth. If you think about it, throwing around false accusations could be part of an accepted system to generate extra income for the legal professions. When one person makes a false accusation, another person needs to be hired so you even know where you stand.

Imo, there ought to be heavy, heavy penalties (perhaps massive fines or jail time) for threatening false legal action. A couple of examples of a legal professional going to jail for years or bankrupt because he threatened someone with some trumped up nonsense at the request of a fatcat would go a long way. These people should not be allowed to go around bullying people in this "free" world in which we live. They should be concerned that they'll never see their family for a few years, that'd make them think twice before pushing people around with green paper.
