Creationist "Discovery" Institute Busted

Croccydile says...

Upvote for a shining example of why the DMCA is/was fucking retarded.

Despite the "penalties" for an inappropriate use of takedown notice, I don't think there has been a single case ever where this has been applied. There have been counter-claims used before to get the material posted back, but it seems to be a rare occurrence.

The problem lies within say YouTube taking the video down, and being required by the DMCA to keep it down for a peroid of time (a week?) for a DMCA counter-claim to be processed if necessary. Unless you kick and scream about it like this guy is doing, everyone forgets about it and moves on because of the cool off period. If it ever got past step 1, the amount of money involved to take someone to court over a misfiled claim would bankrupt most people. By then the culprit will just go "LOL, sorry" but the damage will already have been done.

In short, its an extremely easy way for corporations to censor because of this setup. You have almost zero options as the little guy (it was designed this way on purpose!) since YouTube (or any other hosting company) has to follow the DMCA no matter how bad the law is.

Whats even worse is when places outside the US comply to the DMCA blindly despite having no legal obligation to do so whatsoever. Disgusting.

G20 protester snatched off the street by unmarked car

ForgedReality says...

Could be fake, to try and stir up viral attention for their agenda or whatever, but it could be real, I suppose. We don't really know what the guy did. Why is there a huge plume of smoke at the end? Maybe he was part of something that got someone hurt or otherwise stepped outside the bounds of "peaceful demonstration," and he was just somebody who needed to be cooled off. Obviously, if it's not fake, they're just keeping the peace. Take off your fucking tinfoil hats, people. God damn.

Also, image stabilization should be required by law in every device capable of recording video.

So can we ban his racist ass now? (Wtf Talk Post)

imstellar28 says...

^You should just walkaway and cool off, you are just digging the hole deeper. You have clearly lost all ability of reading comprehension.

I'm saying that "a majority of people calling someone a racist - i.e. via negative votes" doesn't make him racist because a democracy or consensus doesn't prove shit. The exact OPPOSITE point you are trying to suggest I am making. What proved he wasn't a racist was his previous comments, and the obvious context of satire, not the majority people voting NO in the poll.

No wonder you think westy is racist you misunderstand what anyone says in the exact OPPOSITE way.

Naked man tasered multiple times at Coachella festival

ObsidianStorm says...

Who gives a fuck if the guy is naked? This is a perfect example of a 'problem' that takes care of itself. Give the guy no attention, The novelty wears off and the guy leaves or gets dressed (probably the latter if it cooled off).

Yeah the guy was 'breaking the law' but it really should be at the cops' discretion whether the situation requires strict enforcement or not. In this case, the cops' actions were the greater evil.

The guy presented no threat to public safety. In fact he provided a feel-good service. He made all the men around feel well-endowed.

Norwegian kid banned from PS3 - drama ensues

maximillian says...

I still use spanking as a form of discipline but for extreme conditions such as disobedience or rebellion (which this kid demonstrates when he hits his dad). My discipline consists of verbal warnings, timeouts, sending a child to their room (not to play), taking privileges away, and finally spanking. Children need rules and boundaries. They also need to know that there is consequences if they break the rules. The consequences should also fit the "crime". Again, disobedience and rebellion are the extreme conditions. I do not spank for accidents like breaking a dish/glass, but do lecture them when they do so.

I think there is a proper way to spank a child but most parents utilize an improper method. My method is:
1) they should first know that spanking is a consequence to certain behavior.
2) Only spank in a private area... I use the bathroom. It gives me time to cool off myself if I am upset. Never spank your child if you are upset.
3) Once in the bathroom I talk to my children and ask why they are getting a spanking. I then tell them how many spankings they will be getting. Typically it's 1-2 slaps to their bottoms depending on the severity.
4) I hit only on the bottom and I don't use any instruments. It hurts me too. I hit hard enough to give them a sting and draw a tear. The goal is to teach them consequences not hurt them. Basically, I am talking to their brain through their rear end.
5) If they are upset afterward then sometimes I will give an additional spanking. They need to know that their choice to disobey/rebel is why they received a spanking.
6) I talk once again to them. And remind them of the rules.

That's it. I think that it has worked in my home. I got this method from a book called, "Dare to Discipline". If you review the comments on the book half are good and half are bad. I suppose it is the divide between people who favor spanking and others who do not. Some people say that spanking leaves psychological scars. I think if you do it the right way and be consistent then this does not happen. My kids are not oppressed. They are very loving and outgoing. As they get older they mature and spanking has also become infrequent.

Siftquistions (Sift Talk Post)

The last round of siftquisitions had many people upset about the fact that there even were siftquisitions

really? I thought I was the only one that railed against the whole idea, and even then I conceded that I accepted it as part of how VS is run.

24 hours is an unfair amount of time for an accused member to respond

Absolutely. And when someone has been in a confrontation with other users, there's a pretty good chance that person might decide to take a couple days to cool off. I know there will be messages left on profiles, but 24 hours is very short, even in internet time. Besides, as the resident public defender, I can't be around every day either.

if you want to vote to have a member banned from this site than that vote from you should be plain for all to see.

I agree with that completely. Anonymous voting on siftquisitions is a really Bad Idea™.

This is for thepinky, who doesn't read my blog. (Blog Entry by UsesProzac)

thepinky says...

EDD, you provided links where, I assume, we are supposed to find me name-calling, etc., but maybe I'm missing where I ever did that?

alien_concept, in the past you have been really cool to me and were very forgiving of past mistakes when I decided to be less confrontational, which is why it gives me pain to say that you are dead wrong if you think that Prozac is a saint and that I alone have been winding this situation up. After Deedub posted his http://politics.videosift.com/talk/Wonder-how-UsesProzac-feels-about-comments-by-thepinky thread and the whole situation seemed to be cooling off, Prozac called me a cunt on my profile not once, not twice, but three times without response from me. I admit I was boiling up a little bit inside, but I tried to ignore it. This more recent incident began when I noticed Prozac antagonizing someone else and being extremely nasty on their profile. I will keep the name of the person under wraps for fear that he will be dragged into this matter and called my sidekick. It wasn't my business, I should have ignored it, but it annoyed me, so I said something to her. WOW. I'm telling you truthfully that my original comment was very calm and I didn't say anything offensive at all. She responded with a hailstorm. She was understandably annoyed. I should have left her alone. But talk about personal attacks! She is the QUEEN.

All you need to do is read this blog to see that I am not the one winding this situation up. Two posts about me in a row? She seems to be thinking, "My insults are just not enough, let me expose my lies and exaggerations about her to the world and all of my friends can back me up!" The above post is one that she posted on my profile...I think it was 3 times? And I deleted it because it is as nasty as anything. Go ahead and read the comments on LittleRed's profile. Isn't it obvious who is antagonizing who? And it is not only LittleRed that she picks on.

You might also notice on Deedub's thread that I attempted to make peace with Prozac, only to have her make fun of it and make me feel like an idiot for trying.

I'm not asking you to take my side. I'm sure Prozac has plenty of wonderful qualities that I have never had the privilege to see. But the person I know loves to crush her enemies, take their weaknesses, blow them out of proportion, shove them in their faces, and announce them to the world. I'm not a fan.

We BOTH could have behaved much more like adults. Prozac is not the Big Bad Wolf and I am not the victim. I haven't behaved well, either. I wish it had never happened and I hope that we can all put it behind us.

The Great VideoSift Coming -Out Thread (Happy Talk Post)

Ornthoron says...

Hi, my name is Arvid, and I live in Oslo, Norway. I have just finished a degree in physics from the University of Oslo, but I can't seem to let go of the student life just yet. I enjoy sifts that mess with my head, such as these.

I discovered VideoSift because Fedquip kept referring to it on his old AOL blog. I lurked here for over a year before finally signing up this autumn. For a norwegian, I have an almost unhealthy interest in american politics, and I deeply regret the decline and death of http://newsbloggers.aol.com.

On my freetime I am a musician. I have played the Euphonium since I was eight, but have in recent years switched mostly to Trombone. I mostly play and listen to jazz, first and foremost in a Big Band. I was a member of a now dead 30's swing band, and I am soon starting a new band to play some more modern jazz. I sing in a choir as well. My muscial heroes are among others Bach and Bartok, Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, Pink Floyd and Steely Dan.

I read both fantasy and classics, and my favourite authors are Kurt Vonnegut jr., George R. R. Martin, Tolkien, Dostoyevski and Gert Nygårdshaug. My username is a witness to my geeky past, as it is the Sindarin translation of my real name.

I catch onto minor hobbies sporadically as well. I used to game a lot, but this has cooled off lately. I was an avid Guitar Hero player, and got to be pretty good. I have been into sailing. I have been into fencing. I enjoy walking and skiing in the majestic norwegian mountainscape. In the summer I play with the Diabolo. My latest fad is Origami, which I used to do when I was a teenager and have just now picked up again. I have also been an extra in some norwegian music videos and minor film productions. I am the emo-looking guy playing accordion in this video.

I follow both norwegian and international politics with interest, and I have a blog in norwegian about politics and science which I update very sporadically.

Oh, and I am the older brother of Haldaug, who has a higher integrity as a sifter than me. That is why I have higher ranking than him, even though he has been a member longer than me. So go to his pqueue if you want to find some musical/thoughtful/absurd gems.

edit: Forgot to mention my favourite beverage, Brakspear Oxford Gold organic ale. Try it out.

Scrimp Scampi - a Nice how-to video! Delicious!

djsunkid says...

whoa, i ... really dislike the presentation style. I was going to downvote it purely on the basis of the idea of "shrimp scampi" which to me is like calling a dish "beef chicken", but it turns out that scampi is the name of a dish in American cookery. Bah. To me, scampi refers to a small langoustine.

There are a lot of ways that I disagree with the recipe in this video as well as the disdain that I have for the perky presentation style.

Problem the first:
Recommending people to buy already peeled shrimp does them a disservice. The best way to cook shrimp is if they are still whole and alive, and each step further away from that will yield an inferior final result. So, best is alive, but whole, head on fresh is better than headless is better than headless peeled shrimp. Essentially, she is recommending boneless skinless chicken breast for the christmas roast.

Problem the second:
That garlic was NOT READY. There is a time and a place for raw garlic, but not in a dish like this. Fry your garlic until it just turns golden. This requires the garlic to be uniformly chopped. Not minced or pureed, but uniformly chopped, so that it is all ready at around the same time. I actually personally prefer to slice my garlic thinly, like that scene in Goodfellas. Pay very close attention though, because that moment when the garlic is perfect is only a few seconds away from burnt, bitter fail.

Problem the third:
While boiling shrimp is a reasonable way for cooking them in certain circumstances, for the dish that she is preparing, this is far from ideal. When the garlic has reached that perfect point of golden, then toss your shrimp in, and take it off the heat for a moment. If you time it right, the shrimp will cool off the oil and garlic, seizing it at just the right flavour. When the sizzle calms down a touch, put the pot back on the heat and let the shrimp get some colour on one side. After a moment, stir the shrimp and THEN add the wine. I agree with mintBBB about the clam juice. WTF. I am actually kind of scared of store bought clam juice, although I make my own from time to time and I LOOOOOOVE it. I wouldn't use it to cook shrimp though, maybe I'll try it some time. Anyway, yes, then proceed the way that the video said.

Basically, my biggest issues are the name of the dish, the peeled shrimp, how she cooks the garlic, and when she adds the shrimp. Oh, and her perky perky annoying voice.

Oh and another thing. Curly parsley? Come on. Get the flat leaf, please.

Anyway, that's my rant/recipe fix.

McCain: Palin Is Top Energy Expert In US, Understands Russia

joedirt says...

Joseph Goebbels ("Aus Churchills Lügenfabrik" published in Die Zeit ohne Beispiel, 1941)

Rather, it depends on a remarkably stupid thick-headedness. The English follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it. They keep up their lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous.

US Office of Strategic Services' profile on Hitler
His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.

Code Pink protester Hit with Baton: BOOM HEADSHOT!

NordlichReiter says...

Standard? When I worked the crowds there was no standard push. It was order them to leave or arrest them. There was no pushing, macing, or tazering. Just a good snatch and grab.

Just calmly walk up with a smile and hold your hand out, they will instinctively hold their hand out. Cuff them read them their rights and take them to a place where they an cool off.

Generally done with the baton at mid chest height? That's lethal force, targeting the heart. It is done when it needs to be, with the round edge of the baton(just like the officer did), never the point.

Simply should have just arrested her, do not mace. Just arrest, simple and easy.

>> ^McFarQue:
Protesters piss me off.
More so the confrontational ones that just have to be at the front of the line.
Also, that wasn't a head shot, it was a standard forward push used to force a crowd backwards. Generally however, it's done with the end of the baton at mid chest height. That was a little high, but still not in the head.
Oh and look, theres a megaphone on the ground beside her. Makes you wonder how long she'd been there playing the goody goody two shoes facade.

To erimus:

All the more reason to try and be a good cup, not a storm trooper. Why is that a stereotype? Because they never show when a cop is punished, they only show that he got his gun taken away and he is on a desk job. Or administrative leave.

Simple solution if you are a cop and in a situation like this do not act like an ass or a bad mamajama. Just smile and arrest them for disobeying an officer of the law. Simple and clean.

The less authority looks like gestapo the better.
