I missed the Caribbean, and having played pirates I have no defence.

So about half the problems are due to changes since the film was made, and half were taking liberties to get it to rhyme.

Transnistria not quite the subject I remembered, but that was the article I was thinking of.

I remember seeing some of this while snorkeling in the Caribbean on my honeymoon, and have explored tidal pools on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Canada. Underwater is a completely different and sometimes eerie world.

Moray eels (family Muraenidae), bluespotted cornetfish (Fistularia commersonii), and large groupers, like the tiger grouper (Mycteroperca tigris) and Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus), have been observed preying on lionfish. Falling overboard is rare (23 incidents in 2013), but apparently Carnival is not the company to go with if you're worried about it (Carnival owns Royal Caribbean), they have 21 percent of the traffic worldwide, but half of the overboard incidents in the past ten years have come from Carnival ships.

It's really rare to be rescued in an overboard from a cruise ship. Successful rescues only happen every few years.

In the United States there is still a high prevalence of firearms, even in areas with some slightly more stringent restrictions. France is not the US is not Germany is not Spain is not Norway. They are more different from one another than Florida and Colorado are. Nevertheless it is possible to compare the countries. Comparing US drug policy with Columbia on its own may be foolish, but when you compare it to all the countries of Europe you are getting a better idea of what works and what doesn't. If decriminalization works in every European country it would be unusual if America was so different it would make things worse. On the other hand, you have been trying to compare Spanish speaking Caribbean islands with mainland USA, so I think you are hoist on your own petard there, I'm afraid.

Yes it's a coincidence. That's the most likely outcome from trying to draw conclusions from the position of a single data point. I'm not sure if you think that the culture of a Spanish speaking Caribbean colony a thousand miles from the mainland is representative of the US as a whole, but that seems a strange position to take.

In any event, you have shifted the discussion from spree killers to killers in general. The video here is about a guy who might have stopped a spree killer (but almost certainly didn't), and did shoot a mentally ill person. You raise European comparisons, so let's do that. Really? I understand racial insensitivity, but is this a fair expectation of diversity in a fictional place that takes place in Scotland? Sure, the name is completely off, but it feels like the rest of this anger is misplaced on an author who is not trying to tell a story on themes of racial diversity.
To top it off, crowds react strongly and positively to enthusiastic and impassioned anger, further building the bravado of this poetic "slam" piece.
If Rowling is trying to tell and cast a story reflective of the local demographics, it doesn't appear inaccurate.
Scotland isn't the same type of "melting pot" America has come to be. Again, perhaps the expectation has been created that all cultures must have the demographic diversity that America has established. Remember, the character she is referring to is actually Scottish.

Caribana is a huge festival held every August in Toronto. It's a celebration of Caribbean culture. It has awesome food, music and dancing. The parties are off the chain. It usually takes place either at the CNE or on the Toronto Island, it varies sometimes.

It is also a giant grind fest. If you're looking for action and you do not care with whom you bump uglies with, this is the place for you. =)

This is one side of the coin, the dude contingent is the exact same. Oh the days of working at Medieval Times and opening the bar during Caribana. =)

Very cool. I've done quite a bit of snorkeling (mostly in the Caribbean though) and have seen lots of weird fish and marine inverts, but never seen or heard of that before. Learn something new every day...

The bridge is over the Chagres river, which supplies water to the canal. All road and rail traffic in and out of the town of Gamboa must cross that bridge.
The canal itself continues off the right of the screen. The ship should be heading roughly parallel to the rail tracks. The tanker was out of the shipping lane; so, collision with the bridge was not the only danger, it could have run aground in shallow water.
An oil spill here would flow both directions, to the Pacific and to the Caribbean. Clearly someone f@^k'd up bad.

Monkeys are fucking dicks. I remember when I was in the Caribbean I watched these monkeys pick up a possum... and I hate possums they are ugly dumb shits... and carry it to the top of a tree several times to drop it. I was a little monkey kid and thought it was hilarious. I don't like raccoon's either but watching this makes me want to have Indiana Jones soup.
