Penn Jillette: Camera Tricks Are Not Magic

Stormsinger says...

>> ^Sagemind:

Hmm, you do know that show is scripted right? He doesn't write that stuff, the show has writers, he just acts it out - As well as being a brilliantly minded magician, he's an actor.
>> ^Stormsinger:
I think it was the episode of Bullshit when he displayed his complete "I got mine, fuck the rest of you." attitude...

If it were presented as a work of fiction, rather than a work of fiction-busting, you might have more of a chance of changing my mind. And just like the case of Ron Paul and his newsletter, when it has his name and endorsement on it, he's responsible for the content, no matter who actually writes it.

Finally, something I can agree with him about.
He's still an utter asshole, though.

Actually, I've always liked the guy; I think he comes out with some great ideas as well as amazing tricks. In what way is he an asshole? I'm genuinely curious.

Upvote because it definitely can do with scrutiny... but sure as hell looks like it could only be done with camera tricks.

Plus, yeah, the first part of the full version of this, where he 'pulls' the music icon off an iPhone as a physical button, then interacts with that, which interacts with the phone.... That all has to be pre setup

oh i know it was in fact real, and not edited. the only edit made were the joining of the many videos of each angle we took of the dog working the ropes, the music, and the titles. the video is pixelated because it has been compressed. i know this because i am the dude in the video holding the ropes for little geronimo come to dollywood this summer to see the action in person, and see for yourself.

The dog is clearly talented and may perhaps be able to skip a couple passes of the rope (though that's questionable) but the extended video of the dog jumping up and down is clearly edited*. The exact same sequence of the dog jumping up and down is used multiple times in each new camera angle. In one of them, at about 0:50, you can see some fade artifacting from the editing process. I'd love to see the original footage if it exists, but I think it probably doesn't...

*I can tell because of some of the pixels. (;

actually dog is jumping rope perfectly. no editing of the dog jumping rope at all. i should know. its my video and my dog. took me 5 straight weeks to complete the trick. no camera tricks here.

I don't get why these are popular I can understand the ones with the neat camera tricks, but watching shirtless men in towels talk about how sexy they are isn't really my thing. (I prefer the towel off)

Sorry but monocle smile is fucking HISTORICAL. That is all.

I love that people are crying "fake". It's a magic trick, folks; of course it's fake.
"the ppl there didnt seem like actors"
Acting like a typical idiot shouldn't be much of a challenge for any decent actor.
The correct spelling is "Criss Angel".
Not really a one-up... more of a tie.

Yes, it's not so much that it's fake, but more that it's disingenuous. He didn't really perform a feat of illusion or misdirection before an unsuspecting audience, it was done using camera tricks and paid onlookers.

I like to think that 'real' magicians have the ability to ply their craft without the need for such hackery.

Yes, but that's what I like about this video, Ponceleon. Regardless of the "researchers" commentary, these are verbaim, taped, from-the-cockpit accounts, not fanciful tinfoil-hattery. (although I like those too, but for different reasons.)

[e:] Incidentally I can't help but wonder if your invective is the type that made Constitutional_Patriot pack his bags.

>> ^ponceleon:
My biggest problem with UFOs and UFOologists is the jump they make from small, featureless balls of light that are unidentifiable, and space-ships/aliens.
Face it, every single GOOD picture of a UFO, alien, or similar thing is likely a hoax or a camera trick (intentional or unintentional).
Ultimately though, there is nothing you can say to a "believer" be then religious or tin-hat wearing to make them stop believing. For the last decade the perpetrators of crop circles have tried to take credit for their amazing skills and yet, douchebags like that Mexican media fuck who is constantly on the UFO circuit insist on claiming that even the most tongue-in-cheek examples are legitimate evidence of visitors from another planet...
