Wikileaks - U.S. Apache killing civilians in Baghdad

WhataWonderfulworld says...

This is a most shameful episode. It represents failure at every level in the US:
The psychotic pilots were saw what they wanted to see, and either made an incompetent judgement on what they could see, or lied, or both.
* The rules of engagement were clearly misapplied and the chain of command failed to verify that a threat existed.
* The pilots then fired on civilians rendering aid to the wounded, which is a clear breach of US military code and of the Geneva convention.
* They also fired on wounded people who if they represented a threat before the were fired upon certainly didn't once shot with 30mm cannon (a weapon which incidentally should be used on materiel rather than people given that these look like exploding rounds).
* There is no proper investigation and the General lied to Reuters.
* Once the video released the White house and doubtless Pentagon behaved in a shamefully complicit way.
* Finally the US media behaved in an extraordinarily cowardly way. Why is it too shocking to show what ones troops do? If you don't want to be shocked your troops should be properly commanded and controlled?

I think this is a war crime. But who cares what I think? What should happen is that these pilots undergo a Court martial, and if found guilty serve long hard time, and if innocent (fog of war and all that) be exonerated by a court. That presumably is why there are military courts - to test difficult cases?

The bottom line here is that the US needs to sign up and recognise the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court over the US military that most other countries accept, but which the US has failed to ratify, so that its soldiers and indeed the whole chain of command recognise that they are accountable for what they do. Why should US soldiers be exempt from a need to observe human writes in the same way as American Civilians? Only real accountability will prevent this sort of shameful butchery in future.

Government sanction child molestation is wrong. Boycott Flying

I know right! How dare they! And Dr. Child Molestor? Who cares if you are checking for cancer! Medical sponsored child molesation is wrong! And parents who give their children baths?! Parental child molestation should not be sanctioned! Hyperbolers unite!!!

I remember where this baby was dead and filled with coke on a plane... But who cares!

We should blame the govnt. for failing, and we should blame them for trying! Down with democracy!

One war brought to an end, one more to go.

Oh good! So, I guess our savior will be bringing all the troops home from Iraq? Surely there won't be a [dramatic cue] postwar occupation? But who cares as long as it's not called a war, right?

They'll bring thousands of troops home but at the same time deploy new ones in their place. Old strategy to show they're 'bringing the boys home' when in fact they're just recycling them through.

Sam Harris on The Daily Show - The Moral Landscape

BicycleRepairMan says...

>> ^quantumushroom:

Is this guy really being held up by the left as some sort of Big Thinker? You know he advocates torture for terrorists, right? As do I.

You really have a strange worldview. To you, "The Left" is the entire part of the world that discusses things, read books, write articles, critizise religion and dogma, thinks critically, disagrees internally and just plain THINKS, isnt it?( in addition to being all Stalin-supporters, naturally)

Your thoughts mirrors exactly Stephen Colberts rule of thumb: "Reality has a well-known liberal bias"

To me, Sam Harris is a thinker, but its not because I'm "on the left" or because he is, its because he fucking thinks. I dont really care if he cheers for Sarah Palin, if his ideas are interesting and good, they are interesting and good. Why the fuck does every thinking person need to conform to your idea of some "leftist agenda"?

The use of torture is to me a question with a weird property: Its difficult to answer in principle, but easier to answer in reality. The ticking bomb example has probably never happened in real life, probably never will. The other thing is that if it ever happens, torture probably wouldn't work: imagine you had like 1 hour till the bomb goes, you got the bad guy, and start torturing, whats to stop him from giving in after 15 minutes, only to give a false address, and have the police waste another 45 minutes?

So basically I disagree with Harris on the torture question, so there you have it, qm: leftists commies disagree! its like Hitler and Stalin all over! (Except Hitler was a rabid right wing loon, but who cares, thats just in liberally biased reality.)

Giant Fish Head is Going to Eat You!

moopysnooze says...

I've been looking up Iki Jime after Gee mentioned it and from what I understand it's to accurately and quickly sever the blood vessels and spinal cord with the use of a knife or something like this.

The thing stuck in that fish's head has multiple proggy things and does not look like the ideal device to be using for any accurate spinal cord cutting work.

In any case, this vid is pretty freaky and yeah they are being disrespectful but I care more about if the fish suffered while it was still living. If not, meh... what can you do? You cannot force people to be respectful to everything that they eat. Better than if they were toying around with it while it was alive.

All the hoopla over this video proves to me that there are millions of people that have never seen or been in a real fight (in person). When I was in high school the drive-in was the place to be on weekends and if there wasn't a fight, we were all somewhere else.
People fight. And one person usually loses. That's what happened here, 2 guys fought, one guy lost.
The only racists are the people that think there's more to it than that.

Excellently said. But be careful. I think a certain someone with racist agendas round here has a reputation for insulting we who hold this opinion.

I think the amount of talk about ME2 in this thread says everything that needs to be said about Borderlands...

But just in case it doesn't, one play through was enough and even that was fucking tedious. But who cares about that, back to ME2!!

Whelp, should get around to buying it at some point I guess... =\

The EIA channel should be... (User Poll by xxovercastxx)

Sagemind says...

B). Delete a bunch of the channels and slim it down - doing this creates 2 problems:
a). you would have to create an "Other" channel (bad idea).
b). you would have to remove the Ruby reward of being able to create and run a new channel (also a bad idea).

Neither of these things logically follow the choice to trim the channels back. If anything, I think we'd be more likely to stop making new channels if we don't clean up from time to time.
Creating an "other" channel is a bad idea. Why did you come up with it?
I think a combination of cleanup (your option B) and organization (your option A) is the best solution.

Remember that the channels we have were created because we saw a need. If we remove a bunch of them, then there "WILL" be those videos that no longer suit the remaining channels. Which is why I brought up the "Other" tag (a particularly bad idea) because there has to be an option for those videos. (I for one, would never want to see an Other channel.)

I'm sure I can up with channels that can be deleted too but they aren't going to be the same as the next guy that uses those channels. (Cinema, Election08, Future, Humanitarian, Mystery, Obscure, Travel, Woohoo). These were created by people that saw a need for these channels. Categorize the channels, but be careful what you want to remove, cause like I said, I like the channels, as many other do.

Back to the point of this post: EIA and FAIL are different. I suggest the moderators define, judge and remove posts that don't belong. There will always be overlap.

Sort of like the overlap between Animation & Woohoo, Comedy & Happy, Standup & Talks, Music & Livemusic, Conspiracy & Lies...

Overlap doesn't have to mean "the same thing" they are more like adjectives, they help to define.

The French health care system

blankfist says...

"In France you can go to the hospital without going broke."

Not true. There's a 12-14 billion dollar deficit. That means the system is already broke. But who cares as long as the future generations are footing the bill.
