Crime On Southern Border NM Border Reside We Have A Crisis

newtboy jokingly says...

I bought some land insanely cheap because it was on the border and now I want a government paid for $50 billion wall to increase my property's value and enrich me.

Build your own walls, stop asking for free handouts, snowflakes.

3D Object Manipulation from a Single Photo

bcglorf says...

I'm a Comp Sci grad who spent a great deal of time doing 3D coding so yes, I've got some idea what is involved here.

Best case scenario here is you have to track down an existing 3-D model that matches the object you want to manipulate close enough to do well. You also need that model's texturing to match close enough to look good. They don't clearly show how you map that model to a portion of your 2d image, but if they have made that relatively simple it is the 'big deal' portion they are showing off because that is very hard, and most likely has some finicky bits to it.

Also, the first bit of finding a good matching 3-d model is the killer. Armed with a well matched 3-D model, something like Blender already let you do this relatively easily. Finding that model is the hard part and for anything living it's simply not going to exist in 90% of cases, so your gonna just not do it, or do what the movie guys are already doing and build your own model.

I'm not saying there's not good work here, but I am sceptical of the fact that the real nuts and bolts of what would make this a 'big deal'(the UI mapping) isn't being shown. Furthermore, the animated origami clinches my skepticism. Sorry, but 3-D animation of 'some object' in your 2d image has NOT been made easy or IMHO been changed at all by their product. 100% of the effort there is the 3-D animation of the object, which you still have to get somebody to do artistically, full stop.

Did you even watch the indepth video ?

They've made it soooooo much easier.

Yes, Hollywood has been putting cg into footage for years but it require a team and tonnes of specialized software that cost thousands of dollars.
This is one app, with an immensely streamline workflow that most school kids could use.

Alex Jones Disrupts BBC's Sunday Politics

aimpoint says...

I think thats what happens when you've been saying the same thing over and over for the last decade. Its like telling the perfect lie, you actually believe it.

The only real reason I can think of is that hes just generating traffic for his websites, his primary advertising on there is for his own videos and for self/defense, emergency food, and build your own bunker items. His original website was all red and black and more of a fear machine before he had it redesigned.

If anything, he is his own dictator, he loves to hear himself talk and all he talks about is fear and what we should be afraid of so we can flock to him so to speak.

In some ways, I do feel sorry for him.
It feels like he genuinely believes this nonsense and just wants to warn people.

For all his deranged lunacy, I think his heart is probably in the right place. It's just a shame his head is so far up his arse.

I've been a lurker on videosift for at least 4 months. I only recently joined because I found this video on youtube and couldn't find it on videosift. In my state of shock I came up with a great idea to create an account and post it on the very website that I shared many joyous moments with.

After checking up on the video and seeing it got no hits yesterday, I lost all hope. I would just like to say thanks, alien_concept. I will definitely be staying around now

Custom LEGO Marble Maze

When I was a kid I played with Construx, anyone remember that? Not legos, I despised legos, they're for babies. Construx had these knots that really hurt your fingers, specially when you had to snap them off. Toys should hurt you, the pain makes you stronger, helps you grow. Or something.
Now legos are everywhere, Construx is nowhere to be found, and you can build your own marble maze out of legos.
What is wrong with the world?

They're both baby toys. All hail the Erector Set!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Construx

Discontinued in '88, revived and discontinued again in '97. I can't say I'm surprised, either, considering how far Legos have come, what with all the motors, sensors and programmable stuff.

I had a ton of Construx as a kid, enough that at one point I built a "robot" that was roughly my own height. I use the scare quotes because there were no motors or other forms of self-motion. It was articulated, but I had to move it myself.

I had Legos, too, but not as much. I also had Lincoln Logs and Tinkertoy, both inherited from my uncles, so I guess I had a lot of construction toys. I probably spent more time building things in the yard with sticks, rocks and dirt than with any of these toys, though.

Poll on America's Opinion of Socialism

Porksandwich says...

I don't live in California so
1) I am not sure what you are talking about besides everyone suffering economically since 2007-2008.
2) I am not saying socialism is the way to go, but ignoring it's merits and continuing down a path that is not producing desired results is not helping the situation.
3) How do you insulate yourself from society when by interacting with it, you are apart of it?
4) Who is that second line directed at? I can assure you I did not cause any permanent decay of society. People with money and power are the culprits you seek, not your neighbor.
5) I am not sure of the time period when you classify California as one of the nicest places in the world. Many people probably think it's still pretty nice given it's mild weather.

So what socialism experiments plunged California into the state it is in now that didn't exist when it used to be one of the nicest places in the world?

>> ^chilaxe:
@Porksandwich
The US does experiment with socialism.
Here in California, we have some of the highest taxes and most liberal policies in the country, but our academic scores are now literally the dumbest in the country and the state is on the verge of bankruptcy.
If that's what you mean by socialism, nobody wants more of that. People would much prefer how California used to be (one of the nicest places in the world, with high academic scores and a globe-leading economy).

If smug liberals can't figure what they did even in retrospect, these discussions are a waste of time.
Focus on building your own life and career to insulate yourself from the permanent decay of society you caused.

“Once You Learn That, You’ll Never Be the Same Again”

notarobot says...

When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and you're life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.

That's a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Once you learn that, you'll never be the same again.

Young Boy strip searched by TSA

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Religious doctrine? Cults? Market research? Corporate policy? Economic policy by banks, hedge funds, Wall St.? Big Pharma? Big Agro? Big Oil?

These are all excellent points, and in my zeal I have to admit that it was rather hyperbolic to say government is the “only” institution that creates the “I was following orders” mentality. In that I stand corrected. However, I stand by the substance of the idea that government is the primary violator, and that history’s most egregious examples are government created.

If you are down on government save us all the time and just denounce humanity and go live in a cave somewhere.

I’m down on big central governments. Limited, small government at the municipal, county, and state level which are held to a high standard of culpability and performance by voters is fine. Big federal government that implements one-size policies on nations for social engineering are lousy. Federal government is for national defense and some intra/inter state trade regulations. That’s it. The constitution was designed to keep federal powers limited. It is no surprise that one of our man-child president’s great irritations with the country he runs is that the constitution doesn’t allow him to do more “TO” the public.

Build your own running water system, police, and fire dept. while you're at it.

Feds don’t do those things. Those are city, state, and county functions.

Maybe instead of bitching about the TSA you could suggest an alternative?

I have. Profile the likely offenders and stop hassling people who are low statistical risks. It will decrease the workload, reduce costs, and speed up the process a hundred-fold.

I'm not going to sit here and scream… even though I don't like them either. … The kid will be just fine. He'll get over it. … It's a brave new world.

Brave New World. Oh, what fools these mortals be. I’d suggest brushing up on your Huxley and Shakespeare. I doubt Huxley would be applauding your, “bend over and take it” sentiment. You might think it is admirable. History suggests that such a docile attitude towards central government is profoundly unwise. Government is meant to be questioned, held to account, challenged, and regarded with suspicion.

The problem, of course, is that the TSA procedures do not work, and using them to only inconvenience a demographic that does not happen to include you, will not make them any more effective.

Well – very true – this is a good point. What the TSA is doing is security theatre. It is not effective at preventing terrorist acts from succeeding. So why are we doing this? If the object is increased SECURITY then the procedure needs to change radically. But if we aren’t willing to do the things that will actually provide security then we’d be better off just abandoning the whole effort as a fruitless exercise.

Allan stole a loaf of bread. Allan is a thief. Allan is black. All blacks are thieves.

Except that’s not what I said or even anything remotely close to it. I’m saying…

“Over 95% of all air travel terrorism has been committed by foreign-born Muslim males between 17-40. The TSA should focus its efforts on this population to increase efficiency.” That isn’t saying “all Muslims are terrorists”. It is only saying, “This population sector is the highest risk”. Correlation does not equal causation but it does tell you where to weight your cases and analysis. Right now, even a basic statistical model would heavily weight the probability of a terrorist act towards foreign-born Muslim males.
