"I like Turtles"

Apple Campus 2 January/February 2017 Construction Update 4K

artician says...

I really wish companies in the Bay Area would focus their $$ on more responsibility in the face of immediate, local issues.

But hey... space ship, or whatever.

Did a 3D Laser Printer Kill A Bay Area Couple?

shagen454 says...

I don't think that is what he was saying. My interpretation was that he was citing (a recent slew of misinformation) of media claiming that 3D Printers are harmful and in this case the cause of death ; of which a 3D printer would not be able to cause carbon monoxide poisoning, which is way more likely to have been a laser cutter.... No, he's trying to stick up for 3D Printers, of which may contain lasers (not very likely since it's not very commercial yet) and a completely different production method (additive). Obviously, there are A LOT of people with 3D printers in the Bay Area.

That's not how you pronounce epitome.

Is he saying there aren't 3d laser printers? There are. Some use lasers to activate and solidify the medium they are printing with...not all. Sorry dude, you're wrong. Maybe this report is a case of misidentification, but the statement that laser 3d printers don't exist....that's just a bold faced lie.

Straya Day Ride

I want to go back to OZ someday. Loved my visit in 2001 and the delightful people I met there. First two days were at the Byron Bay Bluesfest and there was a small hippie town nearby that I can't remember the name of [something like bin bin ... only not that]. I could picture myself there, especially now

Baseball games are longer than ever. Here's why.

Brisbee is the shit even if he roots for those bastards by the bay. If you're even just a casual fan I'd recommend reading his articles over at McCovey Chronicles. Go Rockies.

blade runner-2049-sneak peek

00Scud00 says...

It wouldn't matter how badly it fails, it would only affect further Blade Runner movies. You'll still end up with a Treasure of the Sierra Madre remake, directed by Michael Bay.
Personally I've never understood the whole concept of remakes destroying people's memories of the originals, Blade Runner was, is, and always will be awesome.

I'm torn.
On the one hand, more Blade Runner would be awesome.
On the other hand, these god damn member berries keep getting their disgusting sticky juice all over my childhood memories.
I'll reserve judgement on this particular nostalgic 'redux', but I really fear that's all it will be. Hollywood is completely devoid of independent thought or original storytelling these days. Part of me hopes this movie loses $200000000 so they'll quit rehashing classics.
I totally expect another Treasure of the Sierra Madre to come out in the next few years with way more explosions, more grisly deaths and action, and everything that made the original great missing.

Do You Know Where The Candle Supply Is?

Transformers:The Last Knight Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

Nailed it.

This entire franchise has been awful from the start. It's like watching someone wearing a deceased relatives skin.... there's some superficial resemblance to your loved one, but the flesh is rotten, it looks horrific, there's no soul and it has all the wit and intelligence of a particularly stupid sack of hammers.

Fuck this, fuck Michael Bay and god help me, fuck you Anthony Hopkins for sullying your god name in association with this shit.

When the hell did this turn into a mixture of Highlander, King Arthur, and some fucked up version of the Transformers of my past?

Really, there can be only one? Why not just call the enemy bad robot the Kurgan?

Plus, and I'm sorry for saying it, but C'mon Anthony Hopkins, have some pride. You played Hannibal Lecter, don't sell out and become like Sean Connery in Highlander 2.

The only good point of this movie is that it is the last to be done by Michael Bay.

Thanks man,I replied.... I decided that I am going to move to the Sonoran desert, get away from Cali and focus on health, space and money Ayahuasca/DMT definitely influenced that decision. SF/Bay Area/Santa Cruz/Silicon Valley... it's too unwieldy for me to deal with anymore. Shit, is out of control in terms of risk & cost of living.... 15 years, brah, I'm finally off into the wilderness... will be riding my bike across a seemingly infinite wasteland of beauty every day

John Green Debunks the Six Reasons You Might Not Vote

Chairman_woo says...

Will it? Or might the ignorant heard instead frequently shit all over something that lies beyond their own foresight, self interest and/or ill considered sensibilities?

By way of example, the abolition of the death penalty was opposed by the majority population in the UK up until about 2015 (it was introduced in 1965)

Likewise with equal voting rights, the abolition of slavery, child labour and so on (though I don't have numbers/dates for those to hand).

I realise the question of democracy is more nuanced than that, but there are enough examples of progress despite popular opinion to seriously call it into question.

I just can't help but shake the notion that the most successful and free democratic societies tend to be those most limited by political elites within them. (this can of course work both ways)

I will agree however that the illusion of democracy certainly seems to do wonders for keeping the baying pitchforks at bay.

A cycle of violent revolution does not seem at all preferable I agree. Clearly we are going to need a bit of both, a meritocratically regulated Noo perhaps? (i.e. earned but readily accessible votes for the demos to influence an elite Noo)

Though of course the problems with establishing that are also legion. I suspect that ultimately unless/until we create a mind greater than our own (A.I. or somesuch), it's always going to be a bit of a shit sandwich.

I don't think the systems are usually the real problem. I think it's just that people as groups are bloody awful.

All hail the mighty Noosphere!

Edit: I'm using Noo here to refer to the higher functions of the hypothetical collective brain. Strictly speaking everyone is part of the theoretical Noo and the anticipated harmony which it would/could grow into.

vil said:

Democracy isnt about who rules, its about how to switch rulers without bloodshed.

If the Noo get to rule and they dont turn out to be as transparent as you hope, democracy will take care of it.
