Straight Razor @ the Barbershop

westy says...

In many ways this is uterly retarded ,

I am all for having traditional barbers as an exsperance to go to just for the fun of it kind of like a musuim or in the same way its cool that you have some stream trains still running or that you can get some types of food and drink that are made in old fationd ways.

but I highly dobt that a cut through razor is as good as a sharp modern blade razor in terms of comfort and quality of shave In all practical ways its not realy a shame that allot of these places have disapeard Its much better in modern times that you now have a choice if u want to shave at home or in publick and how you want to spend your money and time.

Granted there has been a tendency for businesses to go the Macdonalds way where they couldn't give a shit about the customer , but in most towns its not hard to find a barber or restrant thats totally modern but yet does things properly and knows there customer base. ( i bet in the past a huge propotoin of establishments didn't give a shit about the customer ether we have just convenatly forgot about them)

In some ways holding onto the past or past sensabilities with no real logic or reasoin behind it can be like holding onto racism , sexism , inequality , and other attitudes of the past its pritty stupid to have the attitude that because something is traditional or old that its better by defult.

QI - The Saddest Song

AeroMechanical says...

I'd have to go with Adagio for Strings by Barber. But it isn't really sad per se, more of a "I've got something in my eye" kind of song. It's possible it's actually just a very beautiful song, but that Platoon was such a tremendously depressing movie and because they always play it at funerals, now its sad.

You've all heard it before, but here:

edit: Oh, and also, maybe that doesn't quite count as a "song" in the strictest sense.

Mel Blanc (Looney Tunes) and his 1000 voices on Latenight

Sagemind says...

I've met Mel twice - both times in Vancouver, BC at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

The first time He was presenting the Loony-Toon cartoons in their full and uncut versions on the big screen. (Some never seen un-cut before, as TV always hacks and slashes them - more than you've ever realized.) He introduced every one of them and talked at great length about each one. I got to meet and shake his hand.

The second time he was presenting all the operatic Buggs Bunny cartoons with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) playing the music live while the Cartoons played on big screen. Imagine the Barber of Seville played live with Rabbit of Seville playing on FULL SIZE Screen. I have a Lithographed poser of Buggs in a Canoe, signed by Mel as a memento of that event.

At both events he not only shared his voice talent, but went into detail about making each "short". He was very candid and stopped and answered questions in what was a fairly intimate setting.

Experiences I'll never forget!
An amazing speaker with amazing talent and a cherished legacy.

Will Smith- Summer time Feat. Dj Jazzy Jeff ( 4:04)

BoneRemake says...

summer, summer, summertime

time to sit back and unwind

Verse One: Fresh Prince

Here it is the groove slightly transformed

just a bit of a break from the norm

just a little somethin' to break the monotony

of all that hardcore dance that has gotten to be

a little bit out of control it's cool to dance

but what about the groove that soothes that moves romance

give me a soft subtle mix

and if ain't broke then don't try to fix it

and think of the summers of the past

adjust the base and let the alpine blast

pop in my CD and let me run a rhyme

and put your car on cruise and lay back cause this is summertime

Chorus

Verse Two: Fresh Prince

school is out and it's a sort of a buzz

a back then I didn't really know what it was

but now I see what have of this

the way that people respond to summer madness

the weather is hot and girls are dressing less

and checking out the fellas to tell 'em who's best

riding around in your jeep or your benzos

or in your Nissan sitting on lorenzos

back in Philly we be out in the park

a place called the plateau is where everybody goes

guys out hunting and girls doing likewise

honking at the honey in front of you with the light eyes

she turn around to see what you beeping at

it's like the summers a natural afradesiac

and with a pen and pad I compose this rhyme

to hit you and get you equipped for the summer time

Chorus

Verse Three: Fresh Prince

it's late in the day and I ain't been on the court yet

hustle to the mall to get me a short set

yeah I got on sneaks but I need a new pair

cause basketball courts in the summer got girls there

the temperature's about 88

hop in the water plug just for old times sake

break to ya crib change your clothes once more

cause you're invited to a barbeque that's starting at 4

sitting with your friends cause y'all remincise

about the days growing up and the first person you kiss

and as I think back makes me wonder how

the smell from a grill could spark up nostalgia

all the kids playing out front

little boys messin round with the girls playing double-dutch

while the DJ's spinning a tune as the old folks dance at your family reunion

then six o'clock rolls around

you just finished wiping your car down

it's time to cruise so you head to the summertime hangout

it looks like a car show

everybody come lookin real fine

fresh from the barber shop or fly from the beauty salon

every moment frontin and maxin

chillin in the car they spent all day waxin

leanin to the side but you can't speed through

Two miles an hour so everybody sees you

there's an air of love and of happiness

and this is the Fresh Prince's new defintion of summer madness

Chris Matthews to Tea Party Candidate "Are YOU a metaphor?"

Chris Matthews to Tea Party Candidate "Are YOU a metaphor?"

doremifa says...

What a trick: make the federal income tax and have the states to decide to either have a higher sales tax or IMPLEMENT AN INCOME TAX OF THEIR OWN. That is what Rick Barber says at the 5:00 mark.

Alabama Tea Partier Ad: "Gather Your Armies"

NetRunner says...

@blankfist, ahh, I see, so not supporting Rick Barber, just impeaching Obama and gathering an army to fight the government because of the income tax?

I like small business too, but it's not exactly the main thing about this ad that jumps out at me.

My concern here is with this whole attitude on the right that the election of Obama signaled the end of their acceptance of democracy, and that now their only recourse is to take up arms against their own country.

As someone who supposedly abhors violence, you should be a bit more disgusted, and a lot less supportive.

Alabama Tea Partier Ad: "Gather Your Armies"

savethecirclepit says...

Wait, wait, wait just one minute. Now this guy is running to become part of the government and at the same time advocating an armed take over of the government. So if he gets elected will he be out front of his new office with a gun trying to shoot himself?
Congressman Barber: "now that the Tea Party has gained strength we can finally stick it to The Man."
Congressional Aide: "but sir, you are The Man"
Congressman Barber: "don't bother me with details boy. just grab a musket and charge!"

I think Sybil comes to mind.

Alabama Tea Partier Ad: "Gather Your Armies"

kronosposeidon says...

@blankfist, Barber cites the tea tax - an excise tax - as an injustice comparable to the income tax, and just as worthy of rebellion, yet the Whiskey Rebellion was also about an excise tax. So if he wants to trot out the tea tax, then he might as well know that the very same Founding Ghost Father at the table who said, "Gather your armies" had no problem with excise taxes, nor squashing any tax rebellions. Whether he is or isn't your favorite Founding Father is besides the point. These assholes are elevating all the Founding Fathers to demigod status, so let the truth about these giants from a long-forgotten golden age be told.

And personally I'd prefer wiener rubs with Alexander Hamilton. He was such a bad boy!

Revoke BP's Corporate Charter

dystopianfuturetoday says...

Blanky, let me tell you the rags to riches story of young entrepreneur Terry Gou. He fled communist China to Taiwan, where he used $7500 borrowed from his mom to start a business manufacturing TV dials. In 3 and a half decades, he turned his small business into Foxconn, a billion dollar manufacturing corporation which employs a million workers and produces popular items for Apple, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.

Foxconn operates a huge facility called 'the campus', which is a humongous all inclusive structure/city that includes factories, work facilities, living quarters, stores, shops, markets and entertainment. Employees spend almost their entire lives in 'the campus'.

Foxconn is pretty much regulation free, which makes it an ideal environment for workers. Workers on average make $5 to $10 a day and are expected to work multiple 12 hour shifts. They have little recourse for the many injuries and deaths caused by unsafe working conditions and the negative psychological effects of not sleeping. They are not allowed to congregate in groups of more than 2 people on the sidewalk. They have access to one single corporate TV channel, which is produced in house. Motivational slogans are posted all over the campus for encouragement. Anyone who steps out of line or questions authority is met with punishment and intimidation. Employees are also not permitted to leave or enter the campus without a corporate ID badge in good standing.

Foxconn has been in the news recently because its employees have started committing suicide in increasingly larger numbers. Terry Gou has attempted to slow this trend by raising pay from a nickel an hour to a dime.

This is how your free market utopia went wrong.

This is an Orwellian nightmare, but from a purely capitalist perspective, this place is a raging success. It provides millions of jobs and produces high quality, popular consumer products for a very reasonable price; products that you and I both own and cherish.

In a deregulated free market, how does anyone compete with this? What's to keep this from becoming the status quo if it isn't already? This, in a nutshell, is why I fear the Ron Paul Love-o-lution. Foxconn could not happen today in America because of regulations, but with each little bit of accountability that republicans, libertarians and democrats strip away, the closer we get.

Your vision is a beautiful one. The tiny village with a baker, a butcher, a tailor, a shopkeep, a barber and a 5 cent nickelodeon, all working hard and living well together in peace and harmony. It's beautiful. I want to live there too, at least until Terry Gou discovers it and builds a factory there.
