Audi's electric R8 e-tron tears up Nürburgring in silence

bcglorf says...

Well, nuclear is there to make electricity and vehicles emission free. If the greens hadn't worked so hard to ensure that nuclear power was stopped the 41% for electricity and whatever chunk of transportation is vehicles would all be gone.

But fine, is you wanna be sarcastic how about you chime in with a better solution. You hear plenty of chicken little's running around crying it's time to panic. You hear plenty of talk about reducing our emissions. You don't hear nearly so much about how to do that. It seems the only answer that comes up is carbon credits and absolute emission limits. Without nuclear power for electricity production and switching large parts of transportation over to electricity, what is left? Are we just to stop using transportation and electricity all together I suppose?

>> ^bremnet:

Yes, so true. Just look at all of the countries signing up for new nuclear power plants. Oh, and of course, those who generate their electricity today with that peskily cheaper natural gas from shale gas will likely just shut that down. Forgot to ask, how do we generate the electricity to charge our batteries? If you say anything that involves rubbing balloons in ones hair, well that's just too clever! Let's see - in 2009, 41% of global CO2 emissions were from the generation of electricity and heat, and only 23% for transport per the IEA report (that's all transport - cars, trucks, buses, seagoing vessels, trains, planes) so let's call your 30% a rounding error. By 2015, it is estimated that the total CO2 emissions from seagoing vessels will surpass that for all land based automobiles, so can we get a video of an electric cargo ship instead of this car? Pretty sure they have those, right? If we have electric vehicles, and have to generate more electricity ummm... (head explodes). Top marks for enthusiasm, but I'm afraid we're going to have to keep you back for another year to re-teach math and energy balance.

Anthony Davidson's Horrendous Crash at Le Mans

robbersdog49 says...

"It appears that neither driver was seriously injured."

Anthony tweeted last night:

"Well that was a big one! Lying in a French hospital with a broken back wasn't what I had in mind at this stage in the race..."

He was walking around so it's not as bad as it could be, but personally I'd count any injury described as a broken back to be pretty bad! Really hoping it turns out to be minor fractures and it won't affect his career, or life. Seconds earlier the other Toyota had just taken the lead from the Audis after a real nail-biting lap. The team never really had a chance to enjoy their lead.

Interestingly you can see the weight difference between the cars, the LM P1 hits the wall going faster, but look at the difference in the dent it leaves compared to the GT car.

Ahh. Here we go:

I think it's a case of people not realising the benefit until it's an actual working product. If you asked people in 1900 what they wanted in a vehicle they would probably say a faster horse that eats less.
I'd love to see a video of that Golf in Hannover - does it exist?
>> ^radx:
Audi and VW could have started selling driverless cars as early as '09. Don't know about Mercedes Benz, my city is VW territory. The primary reason you can't buy one is the lack of a market for these cars. People are reluctant to hand over control to a machine, and safety regulations on their home market demand extensive testing under even the most unlikely conditions -- and rightfully so, if you don't mind me saying.
That said, when they let loose a driverless VW Golf convertible in the city of Hannover, it scared the living shit out of quite a few pedestrians and bikers.

@EMPIRE

You thought correctly, VW is indeed very common over here. But take out all the Golfs and Polos and what remains is either old and used, a company car or leased. Same for BMW, Audi and, to a lesser extent, Mercedes and Opel. We produce cars for others to buy, because we can't afford 'em anymore. The majority (>60%) of new middle class saloons made in Germany you see over here -- those are company cars.

Google's Self-Driving Car: Soon to be Street Legal

Self-driving cars designed by Google will soon be a reality on the roads of Nevada.
