ATARASHII GAKKO! - Tokyo Calling

newtboy says...

You thought right.
Give me some Kaiju and I’m there.
I also like the group. Totally unexpected from an all girl Japanese group, and they’re GOOD! inventiveness and talent together are a rarity.

No, but was thinking newtboy would enjoy the Godzilla vibes of this video.

Just started watching this groups videos last night. Came for the fun, well choregraphed dancing while enjoying a few of the of the songs.

5 Yr Old Girl Discusses Princes Leia's Slave Outfit With Dad

Asmo says...

Which was part of my point.

The girl is innocent of all the context, and unless her parents are pretty awful, I doubt she's been soaking up not stop advertising that all girls = objects for 5 years.

All that matters to her is what it looks like, free from the judgement of body form, "sluttyness", societal pro/con opinions.

Yup, she'll probably get formed in to shape by society eventually but it's nice to see a kid who doesn't feel the need to conform yet.

SDGundamX said:

If only that were true.

This girl is 5 years old. Over the past 5 years, in every commercial she's seen on TV, on every magazine cover she's seen by the checkout counter when she's grocery shopping with her parents, in the majority of the cartoons she's watched and the dolls she's probably played with, in every reaction she's seen in adults' faces to how women dress and behave, she's been culturally programmed with and internalized what modern Western society deems as "beautiful."

It's unavoidable, really, as @Truckchase pointed out above. It's part of the socialization process. But if you've read about how Carrie Fisher struggled with body image issues and eating disorders throughout the filming of the original trilogy, then you probably (like me) find this video more tragic than cute.

Speaking Out On Street Harassment

bareboards2 says...

@milkman
Thanks for your great deal of thought on this subject.

However, I have ZERO regret over not "socking the creep."

It was inappropriate under those circumstances to hit this tiny guy. I was much bigger than him and I could have really hurt him. His assault on me was psychological more than physical -- my first response was to laugh! He didn't hurt me physically, clearly wasn't assaulting any more, and I was going to attack him?

Excuse me, but that seems a very male response to a situation. I don't see a single woman in this comment stream writing that I should have slugged or kneed him. Every comment about physically striking him came from men -- correct me if I am wrong, I might have the gender of some posters incorrect.

I am very clear, after thinking about this for a long time, that my single regret is that I didn't call him out verbally. It was my first regret, and I struggled to get to the place where I wasn't ashamed of my lack of action in not calling him out. I got myself out safely and that was the most important thing that had to happen. I did that. I was successful in protecting myself. I won.

But I learned from this -- if it happens again, because of this experience, I am prepared next time to SHAME THE HOLY HELL OUT OF HIM.

That is, IF I can do it safely. My first priority will always be to protect myself.

So if I do not feel threatened physically, I will call the perv out in such a way as to stay safe and embarrass the hell out of him. I do so want to "strike a blow" on behalf of all girls and women who have to suffer this shite, and maybe be a role model for any women and girls who happen to be watching.

If I feel threatened with additional physical assaults, I WILL use my training to protect myself -- which starts with body language and a strong NO, and physical strikes if necessary.

Here's a little factoid for you -- 78% of assaults on women are by single unarmed assailants. As we were taught in class, they are looking for a victim, not a fight. Strong body language, strong use of voice -- that is often all that is needed to protect yourself. Assholes will run away when you show you are willing to stand up for yourself.

No need to hit anyone, except with your chi.

Japanese Grandma Jazz Drummer's dream comes true

Suzanne Vega's grandma was a touring drummer in the 1930's, in an all-girl band. Don't know the music style, though.

Cee-Lo Green - 'F*ck You' live on Later with Jools Holland

Fusionaut says...

Yeah, the band is playing over a track. There are some male voices in the back up vocals but you can hear the girls singing louder some times.

There's just something about an all girl band that is totally awesome. Girls playing kick-ass music... *melt*

Valedictorian Speaks Out Against Schooling

Lawdeedaw says...

>> ^blankfist:
@<A rel="nofollow" class=profilelink title="member since May 3rd, 2010" href="http://videosift.com/member/Lawdeedaw">Lawdeedaw, but that's my point. Your take on public schools sounds like a monolithic one-size-fits-all system. That's what it means, it seems, when people say "it takes a society" to raise the kids. But does it? I thought it took the parents. They decided to have the children; I didn't. No other person was responsible for them having their kids. On that point, I don't have children, so don't you think I should have ZERO say in how a school system is structured?
You want "good, fair and harsh" discipline for those who fail, but what about parents (or teenager students for that matter) who don't want that type of discipline? Certainly we should have individual choice how our kids are disciplined, let alone how and what we teach them. Some parents believe in corporal punishment while others do not. Should one group's wishes outweigh the next?
But a public school system is a one-size-fits-all system where the larger group's wishes outweighs the smaller group's wishes. It's always been that way. When I was in school at an early age, teachers were allowed to paddle us, and the parents had no say in the matter. Was it fair that parents and children had to accept public school paddling without any recourse at all? What if a teacher had a grudge against a kid? What if a teacher got off on spanking children? What if the teacher left bruises and welts?
The reason I believe we should get rid of public school is because it's a terrible failure. And it doesn't address the individual needs of parents and children. What if a kid knew what they wanted to be, or at least had a strong interest in some field or industry (medicine, filmmaking, etc.), wouldn't it be cool if there were schools (or tutors) that catered to that without having to teach the horrible 'no kid left behind' one-size-fits-all curriculum passed down by the Dept. of Education? I think so.

Let me give a recent example of no-responsibility members of society fucking things up for parents. My brother does not want children nor can he even stand them. I have three children, all girls 3 and under. Well, my mom got remarried and her dictate was for all the children to have fun during the reception. Fine and well.

They were having a blast. They were screaming and running as kids do, and my brother got furious. Mom was cool with it, even if her wedding had been very formal. My brother said, "If I wanted fucking screaming, I would have went to god damn Jumberee." I said, bro, calm down and watch your tounge when you speak about my kids. "No, I fucking hate kids."

Now, knowing my brother was speaking directly about all children, including my own, I almost punched his face off his chin. That would have had me in cuffs and would have certainly affected how I raise my children and how my children would have saw me. His responsibility was to not attend the wedding if he had a problem with children---or he could have shut up. Period. But since he has a responsibility-free mindset, that it is not his problem but he can interject his opinion where it is not wanted or relevant, I have to suffer.

His mindset is, “Why should I not attend my mother’s wedding because of your kids? And why should I have to put up with their screaming?” Well, you don’t raise my kids, don’t love them or care for them, so stfu bro. Mom invited me and my kids, so put up with them. If you demand they change bro, then put in some fucking effort and teach them! You cannot have it both ways.

I once went to an all girl party (if you know what I mean). Nothing like I imagined it was going to be, spent the night holding my girlfriends hair while she puked in the toilet. Then rubbed her back till she fell asleep. On the upside one of the older girls at this party said to me "your girlfriend was right, you are cute for a man." sigh...

Suzi Quatro: Stumblin' In.

Sagemind says...

"Stumblin' In", a duet recorded in 1978 for RSO Records with Chris Norman of the band Smokie reached a #4 peak in the U.S.

She is known in the United States for her role as Leather Tuscadero on the TV show Happy Days. Show producer Garry Marshall offered the role without an audition after seeing her on his daughter's bedroom wall. Leather was the younger sister of Fonzie's girlfriend, hot-rod driver Pinky Tuscadero. Leather fronted an all-girl rock band joined by principal character Joanie Cunningham. The character returned in other cameo roles, including once for a date to a fraternity formal with Ralph Malph. Marshall offered Quatro a Leather Tuscadero spin-off, but she refused, saying she did not want to be typecast.

its STUPID BITCHES like these who give girl everywhere a bad rep.

You and the people who upvoted this comment are fucking lacking.

Why? Because you're a fucking idiot? These brats and girls like them DO give normal woman a bad rep. I suppose that is not bloody obvious to you. Unless of course you just hate woman and assume ALL girls are like that. I'm a guy, and I can't stand pieces of SHIT who don't have a clue/ a hope with girls, and think that all girls are the dumb vacant fuck ups you find at clubs. Now I'm assuming a lot from your comment, heck you could be a girl yourself, but WTF.

You could also be commenting on the 'its' and the 'girl'. Yes state that people are 'lacking' over typos or not noticing them? Make you feel good? Yeah you fucking rock don't you? Go fuck yourself.
