There was an interview on ABC that I was watching at work, and the lady being interviewed made more or less the same points as this article from the Grauniad, Dilma Rousseff: Brazilian congress votes to impeach president http://gu.com/p/4tdg9/stw

She said that many of the minor parties spent a lot of time explaining their votes, and that many of them had nothing to do with either corruption or Rousseff... so many Brazilians think it's all politicised and partisan and little to do with any real wrongdoing.

It'll possibly show up here in a day or so - http://www.abc.net.au/transcripts/ (I think it was probably ABC News, Series 2016 | Episode 77). I kinda wish I'd paid more attention to the who/what/when/where/why/how.

The end of this BBC News report highlights something that Greenwald said, which is that the supporters of impeachment are rich and white, and those who oppose it are poor and likely to be mixed race (skip to 1:37):

p.s. This isn't the transcript I was talking about, but yesterday is missing from the list (?!?) It does have some details I haven't seen much elsewhere: http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/content/2016/s4445246.htm

Do you have anything decent on the impeachment of Rousseff in Brazil?

Everything I've come across is quite irreconcilable with Glenn Greenwald's comments on this matter. He's probably biased in this regard, but all the reporting over here is either devoid of any useful information or plainly full of shit.

I think that's just because people found it quite suspicious that close associates of Putin were on the list. Isn't it the point that his name wouldn't be found?

Our local coverage is more interested in Wilson Security (one of the companies employed to staff our Gulags) and the Kwok brothers, but Putin and Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson have been mentioned too (and Lionel Messi).

radx said:

Not a single North American citizen, apparently.

You know who isn't on that list either? Vladimir Putin.

You know whose name and face made it into most of the headlines about the Panama Papers? Vladimir Putin.

Makes my blood boil.

Tim Minchin Vs. Cardinal Pell (child abuser protector?)

Asmo says...

Wait for it...

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-02-17/priest-says-tim-minchin-song-hurting-abuse-survivors/7178606

"A Jesuit priest and human rights lawyer has accused Tim Minchin of endangering the integrity of the royal commission into sexual abuse after the comedian penned a song describing George Pell as "scum" and inviting the Cardinal to "come home and frickin' sue [me]".

Father Frank Brennan has warned that turning the commission into a "laughing stock" runs the risk of derailing proceedings.

"I don't think it's altogether helped by having songs about a key witness, calling him scum, and a buffoon, and a coward and that sort of thing before the commission does its task," Father Brennan told ABC's the Drum program.

"Because if we turn it into a laughing stock, then the big losers ... will be the victims themselves.""

Yeah, it's Minchin's song that's disturbing, not covering up child rape...

Ben Carson And Donald Trump Won't Go On Stage

eric3579 says...

What a clusterfuck that was. It was obvious Ben Carson didn't hear his name due to the clapping. You would think that could have been easily managed if the announcers and or ABC were competent enough to improvise a bit and go off script to manage that embarrassment.

There was only the plume of smoke the first day - http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-11/industrial-fire-sends-thick-smoke-across-melbourne/7080002

Somehow I managed to miss it, despite my office having almost the same view of the city that the thumbnail of that video has, and despite living 1.5kms from the fire! In my defence though there is terrain in the way. It is a 10 minute and 5 km drive, but that's because there is no direct road... have a look at the map, https://goo.gl/maps/PxVBFJWaLA92 and the problem is the western ring road, 400m to the south of the fire.

The Simpsons - YOU'RE NEXT

shang says...

The director of the movie "You're Next" applauded this 'homage'.

So wonderful

The Simpsons’ couch gag has become a great place for innovative filmmakers and artists to show off their take on the iconic nuclear family and the many denizens of Springfield. From the creators of Rick And Morty, to Don Hertzfeldt, Guillermo Del Toro, John K., and many others, all have left their individual stamp on the opening of the classic show and its opening segment. Now another artist has thrown his hat in the ring, albeit unofficially, with a gruesome blending of The Simpsons with Adam Wingard’s film You’re Next.

Lee Hardcastle is an experienced stop-motion animator that has applied his craft to a segment in The ABCs Of Death, a mash-up of Frozen and The Thing, and even a music video for the group Gunship. Now Hardcastle has brought that same off-kilter horror sensibility to his proposed couch gag for Springfield’s first family with a possibly NSFW-ish (due to clay violence and gore) and fairly disturbing short. Hardcastle’s couch gag opens serenely enough before devolving into a home invasion pastiche just like You’re Next—much to the appreciation and applause of Adam Wingard himself. It’s unclear although unlikely that Fox will actually use this couch gag on screen, but maybe it will help boost Hardcastle’s chances for crafting a Treehouse Of Horror intro/segment.

His channel is awesome, his mashup of Disney's Frozen with John Carpenter's The Thing, absolute masterpiece.

debunking the 4 biggest lies about immigrants

bobknight33 says...

Yet more Bullshit from the left. *lies

Any immigrant having a job is one less for an American.

5 workers in 1990 now 3 to sustain 1retiree. So we need to allow immigrants to be my sugar daddy when I retire. Only the left would come up with this excuse of Pimping of immigrants.

Immigrants ARE a drain on public budgets 11Billion in generated taxes is jack squat to what we spend on taking care of them.

ABC news indicated...
"The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a conservative advocacy group that favors tighter immigration laws, argues that the answer is clear: illegal aliens cost U.S. taxpayers more than $100 billion each year. "

Another report indicates $346 Billion per year.

He is right the game is rigged at the top. The rich want cheep labor and tha is not you. So yes immigrants are taking your job.

Sure today they might have a low skill job today but their children will grow up and take a good middle / upper class job which use to be yours or you childs.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Canadian Election

iaui says...

Nahh... we surely wanted a minority government but Trudeau getting a majority isn't horrible. It means they have a chance to fix a lot of what the Conservatives have done to this country without having to worry as much about interference from the Conservatives.

Mainly, for the people who voted strategically for ABC (anyone but Conservative) like myself, it means the Liberals get a good chance at electoral reform without the Conservatives interfering. Anything is better than that 'Canadian twat' (Hear hear! and Harper, I'm referring to Harper here, even though @eric3579 left his implication open to interpretation... ) and four years of a Liberal majority will be better for Canada than anything Harper could have given us.

Payback said:

By the way, Trudeau has a majority government (over 50% of the seats),

Really shitty, to be quite honest. Minority governments get more done that are closer to what Canadians want. Majority Canadian governments are like one of y'alls parties having a President AND a Congress majority. Shit happens that truly stinks.

6 Things You Need To Get Right About Depression

Lawdeedaw says...

Since I suffer through this, I definitely appreciate the intent of the video. I will show this to my children, but...all the answers given are the most basic you can find on the subject...I expected much, much better from Big Think than the ABCs of depression.

Perhaps the next in the series will actually be more informative.

Be Crocwise - Crocodile safety rap from NT

blackfox42 says...

Little late to the party, but it was done by different people. According to this article it was done by Michael Roseth (illustrator and creator) & Kamahi Djordan King ( songwriter and performer).

oritteropo said:

It is, isn't it? That was the first thing I noticed about it too... I just couldn't find out whether that was because the same people did it, or whether the second group just liked the dumb ways to die animation.

Top 10 Battlebot Moments (Old)

ant says...

You do know Battlebots is back on ABC, right? Tonight's is the season finale (not sure if it is getting renewed).

MilkmanDan said:

Fun to remember the heavy hitters, that won bouts by actually doing large amounts of physical damage instead of just running interference with a wedge design.

...Although Toro's spring-flipping wedge was pretty impressive also.

I miss the show, quite fun while it lasted.
