Super Mario - The Real World Levels

sirlivealot says...

In the Mario Kart segment you had Mario racing Bowser so having the last boss music from Super Mario World is not a far leap. Using so much from the Super Nintendo age of Mario and not including Yoshi is a travesty..Travesty!

No? For instance, I liked when they used the last boss music from Super Mario World in the Mario Kart segment, and I think it was an appropriate choice. To me it shows that the people who made this video are connoisseurs of all things Mario, and thus they are entitled to take artistic license.

Anyone else get annoyed about the miss matching music in the video? Who uses Yoshi theme music when Mario is not on Yoshi?

This made me really nostalgic. Not just the pixel art, but the music too.

Playing the SNES in a video game haze to a background of melancholic 90's rock, buoyant punk and grunge apathy; smoking too much; drinking cheap beer and vodka (and whatever else we could get our hands on).

Waking up on an old sofa chair bathed in dimly flashing colours and quiet, looping chip music.

Super Metroid; Prince of Persia; A Link to the Past; Secret of Mana; Mortal Kombat and Super Mario Kart.

Spider-Man and Wolverine comics, and Kerrang! on the floor.

And an otherwise, abject poverty.

Seems like another life now.

I didn't really care much for Xen myself, I get all the way through an awesome FPS to end up in some alien Super Mario land, being attacked by a giant testicle monster. That said, if it actually comes out on the 14th then I'll probably give it a look since Borderlands 2 won't be available for a few days yet.

Super Mario Land 2 - Using the Game to Hack Itself

How the hell do you find this kind of thing in the first place?

The concept of going past the boundaries of a memory segment isn't new to most programmers, and since most older games pack things in so tightly in order to make the most of their limited space, it isn't too hard to pull off such tricks. The main challenge is figuring out which bits to switch (to turn on the "you win!" flag) and how to switch them (If the bit is represented as an unbreakable block to Mario, then he couldn't really change it). You'd also need to figure out how to glitch your way into that area of memory in the first place (in this case it was to create those blocks through another glitch, then use the standard Mario Jumping Through Walls glitch to get there, etc). So yeah, it's not a trivial task, but ROM hackers tend to spend a lot of time looking at that code anyway, so it's not surprising they'd come up with a method.

Epic Stop Motion (Gundam) Battle

jmd says...

It seems to be one of the older original gundam series before they became super powered up.

A few things irk me on this animation though.

1) manual cocking of the guns.. not one but several of the weapons used here seem to have manual rod latches... WHY?! Gundam weapons should have zero problems having their internal bullet feeding mechanism be totally automatic. It isn't super mario 3 where the world of humans was made smaller, the guns are bigger, much bigger.

2) No radio communication? in the anime series they never seemed to be able to shut up.

3) Wide spread shots during air combat made bullet dodging convincing in the anime, but not so much on the ground. Gundams were usually forced to absorb a shot or two before quickly dispatching mobile armors, not play neo and dodge everything with matrix like reflexes.
