My compound eyes are sucky.

What better proof than your own eyes?! Better hide well, though. I have a history of doing murderous things to ants that come in uninvited! ;-)

The saying is from Greater Tuna, a ridiculous play popular in Texas, I thought maybe everywhere after they put it on video and TV. Maybe check it out, on the tube.

ASAP Science- Are Good-Looking People Jerks?

oblio70 says...

The flaw I also see is with the "distribution". I question the equal spread of good-looking & nice, good-looking & jerky, etc...I think on one hand, we would qualify more people as jerks, while on the other hand every one of us has adequately qualified as a jerk in someones eyes at some point.

Also, we tend to over-emphasize the negative with the less-than intimate/familiar, much like how 99% of the News is really sucky stuff.

Hillary Clinton Accepts Democratic Nom to 1/2 Empty Arena

Fairbs says...

I've a number of thoughts here...
1. There's never a perfect candidate so you're always picking the least sucky at some level.
2. I voted for Bernie in the primaries and he's been able to pull Hillary far to the left in her words. Assuming she gets elected, we'll see what her actions bring.
3. I live in a state that is safely Democrat, but with trump I don't want to take any chances and he should be overwhelmingly defeated so people like him knows those ideas are rejected and also the rest of the world knows we reject those ideas.
4. If the other candidate sucks more (IMHO) and gets elected that's tolerable, but I'm pretty fearful of what would happen if trump is elected. Or in other words, he's a special case that isn't just the other person is suckier.
5. I agree with your thought in general, but picking alternative party candidates is the equivalent of voting for the person that's least like what you prefer when you have a two dominant party system. If the U.S. had say 6 or 7 parties, I think we'd be better off.

'That guy over there sucks worse than I do' is in no way a reason to vote for someone, or even an endorsement, especially when you have other choices.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: U.S. Territories

yonderboy says...

My arguments were only about what the argument of legal rights, nothing else. I actually have three friends in Guam and I feel I'm more educated about the situation there than most Americans on the mainland. So thank you for acknowledging the soundness of my arguments, and keep in mind that I wasn't touching the socio-economic aspects of the situation, just John Oliver's misguided presentation of the facts.

Personally I'd love to see PR and Guam join. As for "why"... there are two main camps that I think might be right.

1)They honestly don't care. This mixes somewhat with the "they prefer the benefits of living in a Territory over what they'd gain by becoming a state." For example, if you live in PR and all of your income is made within the bounds of PR, then you don't have to pay US Federal Income Taxes. To me that doesn't really seem like a big deal. I think the people in this group would lean towards statehood if they weren't given the option to remain a territory (i.e. statehood or independence only).

2)They seem the fact that the US is still there as a remnant of military imperialism and they don't want to reward the US. In 1899 Samoa was carved up between Germany and the US during the stupid Kaiser's chest-pounding Imperialism phase that led up to WW1. Puerto Rico and Guam were both taken from the Spanish in the Spanish-American war. Cuba and the Philippines were as well, and those two chose independence and are now independent nations (Cuba was a special situation). The Virgin Islands were bought from Denmark during WW1 and the Marianas were taken from Japan during WW2. So... maybe these places feel like they aren't fully American. But honestly, I think that (with a possible exception of a large portion of Puerto Rico) this isn't the case. Or maybe they simply don't think they'd be an economically viable nation if they left. Look to Nauru as a great example of how fragile a small island's economy can be.

Puerto Rico had a really weird vote in 2012 that seemed to indicate statehood... but the ballot was horribly illegal (you can't have multiple, dependent questions of differing types on the same ballot)... so we'll have to wait til they redo it again with competence to see if they really mean it.

Add to all of this the comfort of the status quo. There's a certain philosophy of finding the sucky stuff that you're used to more palatable than the unknown.

But honestly... I don't know.

Maybe Guam just needs to get pissed off to care. Maybe that's what banded us together as united states in the first place. If the people are in a slump, you're saying that's their fault? There have been all types of breakthroughs in our understanding of how depression and dependence can affect populations. I don't know myself, but your arguments are pretty sound beyond actually understanding the socio-economic conditions there. Which I don't know, so you being the expert, can you shed some light on why their population hasn't the motivation to move forward? Humans don't just behave as they do for no reason. (How is their educational system?)

If you're signed into YouTube you can go to: https://www.youtube.com/account_playback and uncheck the option for annotations. That turns them off by default but you can turn them on if you want from the player's setting thing. Sucky part is, you lose the easy ability to click on the boxes people put on their videos for related stuff.

Thanks. I'm from Melbourne, and it does seem to depend on the day whether Vimeo will be awesome or sucky. Even on bad days though, it does have the advantage that vimeo embeds are very rarely region blocked... even if they might take a while to buffer (and then mysteriously fail and go back to the start 20 seconds before the end). Also, there is some really great stuff there.

The reason that youtube and dailymotion seem better in comparison here is that they have caches in our local ISP's, iiNet in my case, and Vimeo doesn't seem to have the same agreements.

@Yogi
totally agree.
i was not trying to make the argument that women are to blame.
what i was trying,and failing i guess?
is to express that this mans experience is not as isolated as you may think.

has nothing to do with sexism nor man vs woman.
if i implied that i sincerely apologize.

my argument is that ignorance coupled with power and authority will end badly and when we are dealing with families and children...well..its a sucky experience.
