This and the Georgian ski lift has made me rethink my Eurasian ski tour.

Another terrifying angle

At least ten people were injured in a ski-lift crush in Georgia’s mountain resort of Gudauri.

The citizens of Georgia, Ukraine, Russia and Sweden were reportedly taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

A ski lift malfunction was reported at Sadzele mountain ski trail in Gudauri in the morning on 16 March. There was an emergency stop after which the ski lift chairs started sliding back. The riders had to jump off the ski lift to survive.
According to the Georgian Healthcare Minister, David Sergeenko, 8 people turned to the Gudauri-based medical emergency clinic.

“Luckily no one was killed or seriously injured. There are two patients, the nationals of Ukraine and Sweden, who still need to be paid particular attention,” said David Sergeenko. According to the Georgian Healthcare Minister, the Ukrainian citizen has an open fracture of a forearm, while another injured person, a Swedish national, is a pregnant woman. Both of them have been transported from Gudauri to Tbilisi by helicopter.

The Georgian Ministry of Interior has instituted criminal proceedings under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of Georgia – “violation of safety regulations or procedures for the operation of the railway, water, air or cableway transport traffic”.

I'm sure there's an "in Russia, ski lift ......'s you" joke here, but I can't find it.
Scary stuff. I'm guessing transmission failure of some kind, but where are the emergency brakes?

So do the boxes rotate sideways from one shaft to the other at the top and bottom like a ski lift?

I avoided this clip because I kept thinking to myself how could a ski-lift rollback be interesting enough to watch 3+ minutes of it... needless to say I was rather stunned once I actually watched it.

Windchill? oh hell, I'll look it up:
If the air temp was 0 C, and it was 110 kph wind, then accounting for windchill, those poor saps are looking at -11 C. brrrrr... and you can bet the insulation of their clothing wasn't working at peak efficiency.


If they're wearing decent ski clothes then wind chill with be non-existent. The outer shell of most ski stuff is waterproof and wind proof, so wind doesn't make you any colder than calm air (otherwise skiing fast would freeze you to death).

Of course, not everyone wears proper layers, and I can only hope they didn't have any exposed skin.

110mph winds would have torn down the ski lift and the building next to it. It's definitely an exaggeration.
