Americans Observing 9/11 by trying not to Masturbate.
I'm actually going it see if I can hold it down between 9 and 11 times today. In remembrance, and much less than my daily norm.

Fox News Declares War on Canada
>> ^Sagemind:
Fox thinks they engage in harmless banter, but what they have really done is insulted the many generations of an entire Country.
Imagine them attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, walking up to a Canadian war veteran, and spitting in his face. Oh, the laughter!
Children. I can understand children being unable to put a face on the people they insult and slander to this degree, but grown adults? What kind of a human being can do that?
Fox News Declares War on Canada
On the flip side of the RCMP side of things, if you want to see our soldier's pride, just show up on Remembrance Day. Many of our soldiers are so decorated, you'd be surprised.

Us Canadians might be peace lovers but we're feisty, don't piss us off! (blood boils....)
Cheers, and have a great day, eh?
Little Belgian Boy Salutes Canadian Troops
that makes me so happy - had to watch it a few times.
bookmarked, for Remembrance Day.
Bizarre Republican Arguments on the Stimulus Bill
Jobs vs "Work": The argument that I've seen about this (to the best of my remembrance) is that since this is deficit spending, the government is basically taking a little money from everyone to pay specific people. While those people who get those jobs have more money to spend, the population as a whole does not gain more buying power. I think reasonable people could disagree on that point.
Also, Maddow seemed to take the idea of "work = short term" and "job = long term" and say that meant "work != job, huh?". It is funny because of the way he worded it, but I think she's attacking his wording rather than his point (that doesn't mean he's right or wrong necessarily).
GDP: I've heard several economists talk about debt artificially increasing GDP. My memory on this one is a little more fuzzy though. If the money people are spending to increase GDP is borrowed money, is it fair to say that this is increasing the health of the economy? I've seen a lot of fiscal conservatives (that doesn't mean republican btw) say that consumer debt and national debt are large issues that aren't being addressed by this stimulus.
Bipartisanship: I think both parties are guilty of this. Both sides seem to define bipartisanship as "the other side agreeing with our ideas." There are, of course, those who won't even listen to the other side unfortunately, but just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean that are being anti-bipartisan.
I'm not taking sides on these issues, but I do like to listen to people on both sides. Maddow likes to jab at the low hanging fruit (and is usually pretty funny about it), but she also seems to do so in a way that oversimplifies the issues she is speaking of. She, like many here as well, uses the terms "republican" and "democrat" as if everyone within those parties agree with each other.
The stimulus just passed in the Senate anyway, so we'll see how things turn out (I'm hoping for the best).
Obama Thanks A Marine
>> ^dgandhi:
Question for anybody who has done honor guard duty: Is this a massive breach of protocol? What is a marine "supposed" to do in such a situation?
I know Obama being commander-in-chief probably changes, or at least confounds, all the rules, but that marine looks very shocked.
Its not uncommon for politicians or high brass to want to chat with catafalque members, but it doesn't happen a lot, thus the surprise on the guards face.
Ive also had one of my guard's pass out in the middle of a remembrance day ceremony, he was dragged off, another picked up his rifle and resumed his place.
Its just military drill, to intentionally break form without a good reason is about the only time you would get a slap on the wrist, otherwise its no big deal. If the pres wants to shake your hand, you shake his hand.
Stress Test Offered to Angry Gay Pope - Bad Idea!
From Luke 22:
[19] And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."
[20] In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
He's making a metaphor oh how his body is (will be) broken and his blood has (will be) poured.

how so?

^Snubbing books that aren't regarded as high literature by literary academics isn't as condemning as it might seem.
Literary academics belong to a homogeneous culture that's isolated in some ways from much of the larger intellectual community. Freud is still taught in literature departments as if his ideas were a reasonable representation of the field of psychology, which hasn't been true for a number of decades.
Literary academics' culture values books like Joyce's Ulysses and Proust's In Search of Lost Time or Remembrance of Things Past (which is a top contender in lists that include books in other languages), but to more utilitarian cultures, like those related to economics and science, these two books seem to be about how to live a mediocre, useless life (Ulysses) and how to live an indulgently nostalgic, useless life (In Search of Lost Time).
Books from readers' top lists like the Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged aren't written from or for that specialized academic literary culture, and we want thinking people from all of our sub-cultures to have reflective literary works that speak to their values.
(Please share your thoughts, anybody.)
Remembrance Day / Veterans Day / Armistice Day (Military Talk Post)

Will do.
Thanks mg, kp and blankfist.

Present.
Hitler Speaks
Great sift.
Watched this from beginning to end. It gets quite chilling near the middle when they start revealing how matter-of-fact he and his lieutenants are about the deaths of millions.
A fitting upvote considering how close to Remembrance Day it is.
