Dolphin at a wedding

alizarin says...

From Wikipedia (which has said image of dog riding a dolphin's back across a sunset)

This is a film about a boy, Jordan, and his dog Zeus. A marine biologist, Mary Beth, who is a single parent and leads a hectic life with her two impossible daughters, Judith and Nora. She, along with her partner Becky, are trying to study and save a beautiful dolphin named Roxanne. Unfortunately, Mary Beth's greedy partner, Claude Carver, tries to capture the dolphin and sell her. Terry finds out that he has relationships with Mary Beth, and they start going out, under the watchful eyes of the kids. Zeus stows away one day on one of Mary Beth's boat trips, which really annoys Mary Beth. However, when she finds out that the dog and the dolphin can do "interspecies communication," she is intrigued and curious. In the end, it's a race to save the dolphin and Zeus, who was kidnapped by Claude. At the end Claude gets caught by Becky, and gets peed on before he gets arrested. In the end Terry marries Mary Beth, and Roxanne finally finds a pod to live in, and has to say goodbye to Zeus.

The sift IS ready for this kind of terrible

does his necklace say "norm"?

It say's "Nora", the name of his girlfriend later wife who actually destroyed the band in a yoko ono kind of way. Although this really is terrible, Dieter Bohlen (the blonde one) is among the most successful producers ever (he sold more than 150mio records). I don't like him, especially since you cannot avoid him on german tv these days, but i do respect his career.

actually, he may have picked up that interesting nugget from the same place i did as a kid. sagan's cosmos series.

so much great material here, and one of his funniest and sharpest answers was the least related to his field of expertise.

the bit @ 46:12 that starts with, "i'm not worried about kids. i'm worried about grown-ups."
and ends with "we spend the first year of their lives, teaching them how to walk and talk.
and the rest of their lives telling them to shut up and sit down."

that one could almost be a cosby line, maybe nora ephron.

Nora O'Donnell Trips up Kevin McCarthy on Stimulus

Flood says...

>> ^NetRunner:
I suppose if you want to split hairs, I mischaracterized it slightly; she doesn't say people keeping their money creates a stagnant economy, instead she says people keeping their money won't help correct a stagnant economy (or "stimulate" the economy). That seems like a semantic quibble though.

Are we watching the same video? I don't see anything even closely like that.

0:00 - "So you believe that tax cuts are stimulus?"
0:10 - "And how do tax cuts; and Congressman, how do tax cuts create jobs?
0:45 - "Really!? I'd have thought you'd have to hire someone to put the new sod down on the nation mall. I mean, just to play Devils Advocate doing alot of those projects you have to... [interupted]"
1:00 - "On no I thought you said you want the small business to spend that money to hire more people I thought thats what you just said. That is not keeping it in their pocket. You're not trying to pad the pockets of small business are you?"
1:17 - *Obnoxious Laugh* "Why that doesn't make any sense to me but anyways."

So perhaps you can see how I am confused.

I find the video funny not because she questions of the idea of tax cuts stimulating the economy, because I question that myself. I find the video funny because I see a lady who can't even follow the guy's point. I don't see a woman who is disagreeing with a point so much as a woman who confuses the metaphor of tax cuts giving people more money with a metaphor for people not spending money. After her statement at around the 1:00 mark, the guy tries to clarify but she just laughs and says that she doesn't get it.

Perhaps it is a political Rorschach test, because all I see is a lady who comes off as an obnoxious, clueless, twit while the guy was trying to politely explain the theory behind the idea of tax cuts as economic stimulus.

The guys trying to describe how a tax cut gives people more spending power.

I understand that, Flood.

But the news lady is clearly confused. She says "I thought you said you wanted people to spend that money ... that's not keeping it in their pocket."

[snip]

No where in the vid does the lady make the point that people keeping their money is what creates a stagnant economy.

I'm thinking you're confused. Maybe the use of metaphor in your own quotation of her is the issue. I thought its meaning was obvious. Maybe it wasn't.

I suppose if you want to split hairs, I mischaracterized it slightly; she doesn't say people keeping their money creates a stagnant economy, instead she says people keeping their money won't help correct a stagnant economy (or "stimulate" the economy). That seems like a semantic quibble though.

This video seems to be a political Rorschach test; people like me find it funny because the conservative looks like a fool as Nora ties him in knots and condescendingly acts confused, you think it's funny because Nora questions the proposition of taxcuts as stimulus, and seems to not understand the very idea, as if it's ludicrous.

Earth to news lady, it's not literally about keeping money in your pocket.

I almost preemptively posted about that, since I kinda knew there would be someone out there who would claim Nora is the one who comes off looking like an idiot.

Here's the deal: the chief reason why Democrats are skeptical about tax cuts as stimulus is that many people will opt to save it or pay off loans, not spend it.

This guy kept hammering the tired Republican cliche about "letting people keep their money", and Nora rightly pointed out that people keeping their money is what creates a stagnant economy in the first place.

It was just a turn of phrase, but it seemed to flabbergast Mr. McCarthy here.

Sparkling Korea

legacy0100 says...

I didn't realize how awful Tae-Pyung-So sounded... It's like a louder, obnoxious version of one of those Capt'n Crunch whistles.

If you're into authentic lifestyle experience and what not, what I would recommend is the temple stay or traditional Korean home stays. For some reason those programs are really well organized and even Koreans ourselves wouldn't mind signing up for these events.

Forget about all those tourist traps like Insa-Dong or Seoul Tower and whatnot. Staying in one of those temples really is a new experience in life, but make sure you goto a good one and not some bogus event. Also I would recommend Ahn-Dong, which is about 40 minutes north from Daegu in Gyongsang province.

If you're looking for more modern approach into Korea, then Seoul is your place. Ask for Hong-Dae and you'll find a vibrant night life equal to that of Japan and Spain. And don't forget Norae-bangs.

Other reasons why people come to Korea:

1. Cheap plastic surgery prices, yet very good surgeons. Japanese tourists often come over to get their nose done or a quick botox while in Korea because the prices are cheaper in Korea with no difference in quality of treatment.

2. English tutoring. You can earn a lot of buckaroos if you're a western born Caucasian who speaks English. Even if English is not your first language you are still favored over native English speakers who are non-Caucasian.

Children learn to meditate

persephone says...

Many Indian people would disagree with you, Old Spider. If Ravi Shankar thought Jazz was no good for kids, just think of what early musical influence Nora Jones would have missed out on!

Many Indians don't have a problem with their kids meditating either.

What I like about meditation, is that it gets you to an awareness of the part of yourself that is unchanging, the part that is not altered in any way by your life's circumstances, or by what people tell or do to you.

When we can tap into our essential nature, we are learning important skills like resilience and self-acceptance.

Kid's worlds can be as harsh as adult's, especially since they are so vulnerable to adults. I think meditation can be an excellent resource for kids to help them survive not only childhood, but adulthood as well.

If it's taught in fun way, in a non-religious environment, meditation can be such a powerful tool for kids to learn.
