Bamboo Flute - Smooth Criminal

Bad/Smooth Criminal Piano Mash-up With Exceptional Skill

Sycraft says...

While the camera wouldn't get that kind of sound recording, you can easily record a piano like that with close micing. You stick the microphones inside the lid, down near the strings. It gives a very wide, expansive, soundstage. Here is an example of one kind of setup like that.

However it has a downside: It picks up more of the piano's noise, in particular hammer and pedal noise, as well as key noise. Those are the noises you hear, particularly when he starts working the pedals hard.

In terms of his key movements being sync'd to the music, they look sync'd to me. That kind of thing isn't that useful for evaluation because there are too many variables that can affect it:

1) The sync of your system. Your sound system and monitor have a delay to them. Depending on the difference in the delays, things can be a bit out of sync, perhaps noticeably so. Unless you have your system calibrated for it, which isn't likely on a computer.

2) Problems in the A/V sync in production. Something like this would probably be recorded with two devices: A hand held camera, and a dedicated recorder. The audio from the recorder would then need to be sync'd manually with the video. Depending on how accurate that is done, there can be some desync.

3) Sync issues in the video. I'm sure you've seen plenty of videos online with sync issues, various problems in encoding and streaming can cause them.

Not saying that this is real for sure, I don't know, just that I don't see or hear anything inconsistent.

Toronto Maple Leaf Fans Sing Star Spangled Banner

I know the US national anthem, and I'm pretty sure a lot of my friends do too. You hear it a lot in US movies, tv, etc, so it's just one of those cultural osmosis things.

Personally, I think this is great. I hate the whole "singer with a microphone" for national anthems at sporting events. The crowd should be singing the anthem.

Go to a rugby international in Wales for an example.

Wait- those were the Canadians singing?

Why would those people know the US national anthem, just from watching US sports?

Funny.

There isn't just "someone in the crowd with a microphone". There is a person with a microphone INSTANTLY next to whoever he talks to. Maybe they magically appear there. Or maybe there's hundreds of people holding mic's. OR it's an obvious setup and he has people with mics standing near the actor in the audience that he's going to do the act with? hmm.

I'm not expecting actual magic, but I do enjoy magic performances when they are done well. But this obviously fake, edited and staged bullshit sucks imo.

@lucky760 re. "the fake contacting dead relatives thing". What's simpler? That they researched all the audience members social internet profiles or that Brown had plants in the audience? Oldest trick in the book.

Of course, there's someone in the crowd with a microphone. It'd be a pretty crap show if you couldn't hear the audience member.

The mystical surgery was the least interesting part of the show, IMO. some fake blood and some slight of hand, not really that impressive.

but you should have watched to the end... you missed the best part

Awful imo. No stooges or setups but amazingly there's a person with a microphone right behind whoever he wants to talk to. I didn't watch till the end in all fairness. Had to stop when the mystical surgery started.

Unreal exchange over Canada’s involvement in Iraq

In our House of Commons, although the person speaking is recorded by microphones, unless you're listening on a headset like the Opposition was, you have to hear what the person says directly, and there's usually EVERYONE else there yelling something or the other to someone else across the room too.

I mention this because that is what he's doing. Plausible deniability. "I didn't hear his question right". He's still being disingenuous, and slimy, but he's not stupid. Crazy like a fox as it were.

Overworked And Underpaid - Wrapping Cables - The Roadie Wrap

SquidCap says...

Yup, it used to be a kind of a "secret" to sort out local stagehands. So you know which ones do the heavy lifting and which ones pack the cases.

But no one objects if everyone know this "secret", much better if everyone knows,. If you have ever sorted out +500m of cable after they have been in tour for two weeks, all cables done with "wrap around elbow" method, then transported in -20C and then warmed up again multiple times, you open the case in the warehouse.. Yeah, then it's hot bath for the whole lot, straighten them all up hoping that the shielding has staid intact while keeping the connectors dry... That just sucks, it can take days.

And what's worst, if the cable is twisted enough, the shielding will twist too, and you end up with noisy cables or ones that go "BANG" (the bang comes when a cable is hitting some object, like a floor when it's being used and the wires inside are loose, they will act like a signal source, essentially the whole cable is then just one long contact microphone. In fact, if you put one of those in front of a speaker in a loop, you can hear the music coming thru......)
