heya... yeah I'll switch it over to the HD version tonight.

Hey brother, thanks for posting the Hubblecast 22 video. I always like them. If you want the HD version you can grab it from Dailymotion here:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7eg87_hubblecast-22-hubble-directly-obser_tech

However, if you plan on using the Dailymotion embed I wouldn't change it just yet. We all know that thumbnails sell, and the YouTube thumbnail you have right now is pretty awesome. But if it ends up mving into the Top 15 then changing it might actually help, provided you add "(HD)" to the title. Might. It's worked for me sometimes, but not all the time, so it's your call.

Or you can replace the embed in a couple of days regardless, after viewership has waned.

And if you don't want to use it all, well that's okay too. I know that my heart will go on.

Hubble telescope catches colliding galaxies

Ornthoron says...

Ok, to clarify:

This is not an actual video of colliding galaxies. The actual Hubble footage are the five still images that appears when the video pauses. These are images of different pairs of colliding galaxies. What's in between is a computer simulation that illustrates how such a collision might evolve over millions of years. The still images are just used as examples of the different stages of such a collision.

MUST SEE Richard Dawkins Interview

Humans are creatures of imagination and emotion, and listening to Dawkins talk about DNA, while interesting, will never replace religious storytelling.

Maybe not Dawkins / DNA specifically, but I find science far more interesting than any religious story. I've always been awestruck when considering the scale and complexity of the universe, the unimaginably slow movements of galaxies colliding, the strangeness of things close to absolute zero, etc etc etc. Religion is either largely or entirely composed of made up stories about people doing stuff.
"Hey, so god was going to flood the planet to kill everyone (because he loves us), but he didn't want all the animals to die so he had some guy build a giant boat to temporarily store 2 of each of them."
vs
The Hubble deep field.

No contest.

On the other hand, if there is a creator who will someday judge us and eternally reward or punish us, may it have mercy on my foolish blasphemous self. Also, some irrefutable evidence for your existence would be nice pleasedon'tsmiteme.

Hubblecast: Unveiling the Veil nebula

A few reasons why I love our planet

Ryjkyj says...

I've seen a lot of clips on the sift put to the "Pale Blue Dot" speech. (or whatever you want to call it)

I'm tempted to say the I can't vote for it because if you type (pale+blue+dot) into the search window, you'll get seven other clips like it. And that's not accounting for all the ones that are inappropriately tagged.

That being said, I still never get tired of watching them. I love that feeling I get when I stare into space through some hubble image or try to imagine the sheer scale of what we can see. I love that there is so much out there that we don't know. I wish everyone else was as humbled by it as some of you appear to be.
