Mark Hamill : "He's not my Luke Skywalker"
I honestly don't know about Lucas.
He COULD be a Tolkien-esque visionary... or he could have taken a bunch of pre-existing elements (Kurosawa, Flash Gordon, the Dam Busters) and meshed them together and lucked out with an insanely talented group of people.
I don't want to write him off (I spent 20 years idolizing him from childhood to when I finally admitted how bad the prequels were).
But I also can't ignore the argument that much of what I love about Star Wars comes not from Lucas, but from Ralph McQuarrie's art, Ben Burtt's sound, John Williams' soundtrack (with a massive nod to Holst as well), Lawrence Kasdan's dialogue and the performances of Ford, Guinness and James Earl Jones.
LOL -- even if I somewhat agree with @ant, too.
Lucas maybe doesn't get enough credit for being a genius, Tolkien-esque "world creator".
Sure seems like he was at his best when he took that creative genius and paired it up with other people (NOT yes-men) to cover screenwriting duties (anything beyond broad-strokes, particularly dialog), directing, and probably casting etc. also. Given that, I breathed a sigh of relief when he sold to Disney. Star Wars wasn't going anywhere but down with him at the helm, but I like what Disney has done with it.
Then again, what do I know? His franchise to do with as he pleased. Just so happened that *I'm* also pleased with the net result...
Why Do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly?
What do you mean when you say 'hardcore SF'?
2001? Star Wars? Bodysnatchers? Flash Gordon?
I'm personally just glad that at least someone in Hollywood knows how to make fun superhero movies. Outside a handful of Batman and X-Men movies, most superstuff is seriously lacking. I'm looking at you, Warner Bros.
But I get the fatigue. I suffered from it as well. I watch most of the TV shows.
Quote hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
I'd be happy to take about a 10-year break from marvel movies. Especially if we got hardcore SF movies in return.
Skater punched by kid's mom
I'm a cyclist, both on-road and off. One day, while on a trail no less, I was coming down a really steep hill hitting around 30MPH plus. I'm on the right side, no one else is around, it's the middle of the day etc. Near the bottom, some kid, who was on the other side of the trail by himself on the bench, gets up, runs across and stands directly in front of me.
Lucky for him I have better reactions but I certainly could have killed the kid if I hit him. In regards to the skater, I understand his side a lot better because I've had this happen to me. Given his level of concern for the boy, I'm pretty sure before doing the tricks he checked to make sure no one was in his path. And then suddenly, errant child out of no where.
Also, having 2 daughters I can also say she's a shitty ass mother. I see stuff like this happen often when the parents are completely off in lala land because they don't want to care for their child and "want a break". And the mother comes up saying "you hit him on his birthday?!" As if that makes any difference except, WHY THE HELL DID IT TAKE YOU SO LONG? She causally walked over the from the pavilion, which her son was running away from and never once checked on her child. I have become Flash Gordon the moment I hear either one of my kids get hurt. I have leapt over benches, tables and other people.
So yeah, I agree, mother of the year and I hope that kid grows up and finds someone who actually cares about him.

George Takei on Star Trek vs Star Wars
>> ^ant:

But not Twilight, right? Right?
stern glare
>> ^ant:
I love both scifi series!
How is Twilight a scifi?
It's as much scifi as Star Wars was, i.e. not at all. Star Trek barely qualifies as soft scifi, but Star Wars is pure and simple (minded) space opera, in the vein of Doc Smith and Flash Gordon.
But I'm sure we can all agree that Twilight is...well, yucky.
My Favorite Movie (Star Trek vs. Star Wars)
No, it wasn't a remake of Hidden Fortress. The story was strongly inspired by Hidden Fortress. The style of Star Wars was mainly an update of the old 30s and 40s serials (Flash Gordon was one of them).

Flash Gordon not a cult film? I beg to differ!
I am definitely in that cult! Max von Sydow is wonderful in this film. And who can despise a film with a score by Queen?
