They really were more interested in showing people suddenly disappearing than in what would happen to the planet afterward. It was as stupid as this video, and I had to turn it off to prevent brain damage.

I would also say that the Nook is only offered in 6", coming in @ $259; the same price as the 6" Kindle. The 9.7" Kindle (the same size as the ipad) is $489; only $10 less than the 16gb iPad. This is a bit of an apples an oranges comparison when you're using a smaller screen size.>> ^KnivesOut:

The nook has dictionary integration. It's not as intuitive as directly touching a word, but it's not terrible (you use arrow keys on the bottom screen to move the word.)
It's true, there's no browser integration from within a book. Browser integration isn't worth $250 to me.

This was succeeded by Newswipe which we've seen around the sift before and his panel show 'You have been watching'

Yesterday he also started a radio 4 show titled 'So wrong it's right'.

Touch screen is easier for accessing the dictionary than the Kindle's silly little joystick. Also the dictionary integration is more graceful.

Also, if reading on an iPad, you can pause to google a concept or research related works, email a pertinent passage to a friend or collaborator, etc.

I'm not saying it's an all around better ereader than a Kindle (since it's not, you know, a dedicated ereader), but it's disingenuous to say it's only benefit is a visual gimmick.>> ^KnivesOut:

Ebook reading on the iPad sucks in comparison to dedicated ereaders. Reading on a Nook or Kindle is as second-nature as reading a regular book, and actually a lot more enjoyable (for long reading sessions, they're easier on your body than a real book, for that matter.)
All the iPad has going for it is that gimmicky swipe page-flip.

"Twat indicator" is dead on btw. Just the other day I saw a guy walking down the street with an iPad in his hand, earbuds attached, listening to music. That's why people buy an iPad: so they can say "Look at me, I have an iPad". Consumer whorism at its worst.

Correct deano. Brooker has had many sifts here with newswipe and screenwipe and whatever-else-wipe. They always do very well, people find the guy witty and clever.
Yet when an apple product gets bashed by him, they scrunch their eyes up real tight, pound their fists on their desks and squeak their fury.
If people bothered to think for a second, this is a recent SIFT, it isn't a recent production by brooker. He made this long long ago when the ipad was just announced, so all these things you're saying he's "repeating", him and his ilk were the ones who came up with it.
Brooker's paid to be sarcastic and pessimistic about the media, or politics, or whatever his show is about. He's made a living off it and he's pretty well acclaimed. Him and david mitchell are not dissimilar. Mitchell's just a bit more geeky.


An additional note, for those wondering about brooker's geekiness, he was editor of PC zone (like PC gamer, and coincidentally both owned by the same company, despite being rivals) for a good couple of years.
