Unclear.

A straight-up haircut is not an option. An extension of maturities, a stretching of repayments and waving of interest could have worked quite handily as late as two months ago. But ever since this idea was picked up by others, ever since it was explained in some detail how small of an effect it would have on our national budget, the usual suspects went into overdrive to hammer in the notion that it's still a loss to the tune of €XXb. The argument that it would be a measily €1-€1.5b a year, with a slight uptick to €3b in 2026 or something was burried under a huge pile of fear mongering.

Not sure if you can put enough make-up on this pig. Lots of folks went all-in with their demonisation of any form of debt restructuring. Especially when it's a "solution" Varoufakis has also argued for.

Full Obama Speech to Joint Session of Congress

NetRunner says...

I think I can fill out most of the list:

#1. The House Sergeant at Arms (left), and I think he's accompanied by the Senate Sergeant at Arms.
#2. Special guests
#3. From left to right, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), Senator Chuck Shumer (D-NY), and in front of them looks like Supreme Court Justice Sam Alito.
#4. From left to right, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geitner, and HRC herself (Secretary of State).
#5. In the middle is Congressman Charlie Rangel (D-NY), I'm guessing he's with other House Representatives from NY.
#6. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) currently also Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee (kinda important atm)
#7. From left to right, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA), and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH). These two are the current Republican House leadership.
#8. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).
#9. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), who had a brief flirtation with being Obama's Commerce Secretary.
#10. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). He's the current Republican Senate leadership.
#11. Earl Devaney, the new Inspector General Obama was talking about seconds before (who helped bust Jack Abramaoff)
#12. Not sure who the guy picking at his ear is, but the other two are Housing and Urban Development Secretary (HUD) Shaun Donovan, and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis.
#13. Juggs magazine. Or the text of the speech he's listening to. Oh, and it's Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL), who's the ranking Republican on the Senate Banking Committee (and former chair).
#14. The infamous Joe Lieberman (I-CT), former Democrat who campaigned for John McCain.
#15. Senator Arlen Spector (R-PA), one of the 3 Republicans to vote for the Stimulus bill.
#16. Senators Evan Bayh (D-IN), and Roland Burris (D-IL) the latter of Blagojevich fame.
#17. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) in the middle, not sure of anyone else. He's the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
#18. I'm forgetting his name, but he's a House Republican, and most likely so is the woman next to him.
#19. Peter Orszag, new Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), formerly Director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel is to his left.
#20. Chuck Shumer again.
#21. Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) Eric Shinseki
#22. Not sure, I think he's a House Republican.
#23. Energy Secretary Steven Chu.
#24. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
#25. Don't know.
#26. Don't know. I'll wager a guess it's a House Democrat though.
#27. Senator Carl Levin (D-MI)
#28. Don't know.
#29. Senator Dick Lugar (R-IN)
#30. Don't recognize him, but he must be an Obama cabinet member, since that's who he's sitting amongst.
#31. Evan Bayh (D-IN) again.
#32. On the left is Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL), not sure who's next to him.
#33. Don't know.
#34. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), buddy of John McCain.
#35. From left to right, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Defense Secretary Bob Gates, Treasury Secretary Tim Geitner, and Hillary something or other.
#36. I only know the one on the left, Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but those are the *cough* Joint Chiefs of Staff; the heads of the Navy, Army, Air Force, and Marines (in that order unless I've misidentified the uniforms).
#37. No clue, but it's likely they're part of the JCS organization.
#38. Dunno, but he's sure to be on this list somewhere. To his left is Ted Strickland, Governor of Ohio (D).
#39. Don't know. I think that's the Republican House section, though.
#40. Don't know.
#41. Captain Sully Sullenberger. Pilot of this plane.
#42. Mayor Bob Dixon, from Greensburg, Kansas; the city Obama's talking about.

Phew.

Police shoot unarmed man, laying face down, in the back

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/01/08/BART.shooting/index.html

Excerpts from above link:
----------------
"Protests erupted shortly after a young man killed by a subway police officer was laid to rest in Oakland on Wednesday night...The Oakland Police Department made 105 arrests, including a mass arrest of about 80 people at 11 p.m., said Officer Jeff Thomason. The charges include inciting a riot, vandalism, assault on a police officer and unlawful assembly, he said."

"A BART spokesman has said there is more to the story than what can be seen on the grainy images"

"David Chai, chief of staff for Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, said Dellums was "out and about" in the streets Wednesday, urging protesters to exercise their frustration productively. Dellums also announced that the Oakland Police Department was conducting its own investigation into the matter."

"Thomason said Oakland police will either work alongside BART in its investigation or take the probe over, but no decisions have been made."

"District Attorney Tom Orloff told CNN on Wednesday the incident is a "pretty clear" homicide and his office will focus primarily on Mehserle's mental state before the shooting."

"The Grant family attorney, John Burris, is pushing Orloff to press criminal charges against Mehserle. Burris has also filed a $25 million claim with BART, alleging wrongful death."

"A statement Wednesday said BART "will continue to seek and examine all available evidence and will continue its full cooperation with the ongoing independent investigation by the district attorney."

End Of Excerpts
--------------------

The DA publicly stated that it was clearly a homicide - First time I have seen a DA make such a statement during an ongoing investigation. It's misleading, he didn't say "Criminal" Homicide. Obviously someone died. I think captain obvious made the statement for reasons other than stating a fact.

Pretty much at this point I would only trust an FBI investigation, the quicker they get involved the less this thing gets even more F'd up. The longer they wait the harder it will be to get clean testimonies, witnesses and evidence.

Tomorrow, the 111th Congress Gets Sworn In... (Election Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

>> ^gwiz665:
"So, likely tomorrow we'll already see sparks fly as Democrats seek to block the seating of one of their own for ethical reasons, while the Republicans seek to block a legally elected member of the opposing party for their usual self-serving reasons."
This is so partisan that it could be straight out of Simpsons..

Perhaps, but reality has a well-known liberal bias.

You could argue that Dems are blocking Burris for self-serving political reasons too, since they're just worried about the public concern over the ethical questions about seating him...but I'm thinking that's a pretty partisan viewpoint. They're doing it because of ethical concern, and whether it's heartfelt, or just because they're worried about the public's reaction isn't something you could ever prove or disprove.

The Franken case, is entirely different. There has been an exhaustive, bipartisan effort in Minnesota to conduct this recount fairly. Nearly all the key decisions that led to the result we have today were done by unanimous decision by a bipartisan elections board, or with unanimous decisions from the state's supreme court. Coleman's own lawyer says that it is unlikely they would be able to overturn the current results, and non-partisan analysis of his claims (all of which have already been struck down by the MN Supremes or the election board by unanimous decision) make it unlikely that a court would settle the case in a way that would be beneficial enough to Coleman to overtake Franken's final 225 vote lead.

As it turns out, we were relatively spark free today, Franken didn't show up at all, and Burris was turned away with only minor incident.

I still expect sparks on both of these in the near future, though.

I don't think large majority is ever a good thing.

I agree, that's why I spend all my non-sift time campaigning to get more people to realize the sky is really yellow.

We've gotta put an end to this blue-sky majority.

And don't get me started on the radical Round-Earth agenda. They're almost as bad as the Heliocentrists.

Blagojevich Announces Senate Appointment

13150 says...

TYT had a bit on this, too. I'll see i I can track it down and sift it, because their implications, at least, are that Burris actually has made some "significant" contributions to Blago (granted, I don't think the "significant" amount was anywhere near what Blago was hoping to get, but it might have turned into an "I'll take what I can get at this point" deal).
