Will a Lava Lamp Work on Jupiter

Stormsinger says...

>> ^Psychologic:
>> ^Stormsinger:
Density isn't affected by gravity, after all.

Gravity affects pressure, which in turn affects density.
Solids and liquids don't compress as easily as gases, but they do compress. The amount of compression depends on the materials involved, though in this case I doubt the effect would be noticeable.
I think the atmospheric pressure on Jupiter at an altitude where the temperature is normal for us (~21C) is around 10atm, which should be fine as long as it doesn't break part of the lamp. I could imagine a situation where the red liquid gets trapped at the top, but I couldn't predict how likely that would be.

Point to you. I'd forgotten about compressibility. That said, I agree that 3G's is not likely to affect the density noticeably, especially when the continued function of the lamp actually only depends on the difference of the compressibility of the two liquids staying less than the heat-driven density changes.

The problem is definitely a bit deeper than I'd thought, but I'd still be willing to put significant money on the lamp continuing to function under quite a bit more G-force than Jupiter's.

I'm no Apple fan but the iphone clearly stirred things up in the smartphone market, something that needed to happen. Up to then the combination of hardware and services was utter crap and a poor deal for consumers. The downside is that once they get in there it's all about protecting the platform and wringing it dry for every penny. If you as a consumer want all those lovely forbidden features then it's time to start jailbreaking.

Looking at those pics I have to say the Nexus looks terrible. The iphone is much more appealing.

Having said that I don't care for them. This is my current phone - http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/Dec2005/702NKII.jpg

It was released in 2005! What can I say, it works and I don't like spending too much each month on a phone.

What dag heard when the iPad was announced

EmptyFriend says...

>> ^dag:
OK sure- let's hate on Apple some more.
I remember when I was in sixth grade- it was really cool to hate the band Kiss. "Kiss Sucks" was scrawled all over the the wooden jungle gyms, on Pee-chees, carved into desks etc etc. I realized then, that their "Kiss hating" was more about social adjustment than actual dislike of the music.
Likewise, the blind hatred for Apple as a company, while very trendy I know, doesn't really make you any cooler in the eyes of your peers.
There, I said it. That feels better.

but doesn't this imply that everyone hating on apple knows nothing about the company/products? my wife has been using apple products for a long time (currently MBP and iphone 3GS) so i too have used them pretty regularly. i think they're fine products, so i wouldn't say i "hate" the products or the company, but i'm certainly not a big fan.

this video isn't really hating on apple, or the iPad, just the superlative filled announcement.

anyways, the iPad just seems exceptionally silly to me. if they get the speculated webcam on there then it's slightly better, but i really can't see a need for it (and neither does my wife).

People who Appreciate a Good User Experience Will Like the iPad (Blog Entry by dag)

I'm actually more impressed by the new Kindle DX. I'm no reader by any stretch, but the specs on that thing are impressive, most of all the fact that it's connected 24/7 for free via global 3G wireless so you can download/re-download books any time almost any place on Earth for a week straight on a single charge.

As lame as the iPad appears, I'm sure lots of know-nothings and all the Mac lemmings will buy it because Steve Jobs says it's magic. I myself can't imagine trying to use something so featureless if I have a laptop or tablet available. If I have to carry something so large around (meaning it doesn't fit in a pocket), then why would that something be a device on which I cannot install any programs (except thru the iStore), use any peripherals (like a keyboard), or use any Flash (potentially)? It doesn't seem a useful product for me if I'm going to be so iCrippled (patent pending) out of using all the normal things I'd be expecting from of a computer.

What is the iPad?

Is it a computer? No. Technically, yes, but it's not a very good one. It's limited to what you can install on it, it doesn't have native inputs outside the 30-pin, and, hell, the browser doesn't even have Flash or give you an opportunity to install your own plugins.

Is it an eBook reading device? Of sorts, though the kindle is better on the eyes, has a longer battery life, has free 3G and the books from Amazon are five dollars cheaper on average. Kindle is also cheaper.

Is it a portable presentation tool? Maybe. I mean, it's certainly portable and small and light. The screen looks great, too, but you'll have to do all your presentations in Apple iWork instead of PowerPoint or Flash or whatever you're used to. It only docks vertically as the 30-pin is on the bottom of the device, so for horizontal presentations you will have to hold it.

Is it a digital photo frame? It only docks vertically so I hope you have only portraits. I hope you're also proud of yourself because you just paid five hundred bucks for a picture frame.

Is it a digital video player? The screen isn't widescreen. Fail.

Is it a large iPhone? No. The iPad doesn't make calls, silly.

Is it a large iPod Touch? Yes. Yes it is. It's a big fucking iPod Touch. Yay, Apple. You made a big fucking iPod Touch.

Google Nexus One review

Psychologic says...

Hmm, I hadn't thought about the copy/paste thing. On the Droid you can hold down the Shift key and drag your finger over any text you want to copy. It even copies automatically, so no menus are needed. I'm surprised he didn't even mention the built in navigation or voice-to-text features.

Eye Candy: Mostly pointless, but it's important to some people. The animations don't really get in the way, but they can be turned off if desired.

Pinch Zoom: Probably useful, but I mostly operate my phone with one thumb anyway, and the controls are intuitive enough. I don't think it is specifically a patent issue though. Other US phones have it, as does the European version of Droid. There are free apps that use it, and it can be enabled in the map with a little work.

Apps: The store could be better, but you can search it easily enough. I am curious what functionality he is missing from the iPhone apps though.

App Switcher: I could be wrong, but I think it shows the six most recently opened apps. I would like it to show more than six, but there are plenty of free apps that show more if needed.

I never owned an iPhone so I can't really comment on the differences. I hear that Apple isn't playing well with Adobe, so no Flash support for the iPhone. It should be available on just about everything else some time in 2010 (according to Adobe). On the upside, the iPhone does appear to have the most accurate finger tracking of the three phones.

The Nexus does have the fastest cpu so far (that I know of) at ~1Ghz. I wouldn't give up my keyboard for it though. Maybe they can put it to some good use with more support for voice commands and language translation (Droid and Nexus already have some translation... speak to it in english and it will audibly translate to other languages, but it is limited currently). Otherwise it's only good for animations and flash games.

I look forward to the current batch of phones being obsolete by the end of the year. Competition is always a good thing. =)

Notes: Google Goggles is great, and Verizon's network does let you use the 3G internet while talking on the phone, despite what AT&T's commercials state.

A mobile version and an option that displays only YouTube videos.

3G networks are becoming accessible and a lot of people sport iPhones/Android devices. I check the Sift daily on my HTC Hero and it is a bit painful.

Google Navigation = Death of GPS Makers

an annoyance for me here is how he says 'not having to' download maps onto the device is a feature and a good thing
which it is if it only meant that you didn't have to dedicate the space for it
but it also means that you have to have the internet connection in use ALL THE TIME
and the android phones in active 3G mode eat batteries like a grue

Close but not quite. It means you have to use the internet connection WHEN RUNNING GOOGLE MAPS. Personally I think it would be nice if gmaps would use cached data when no data service is available, but it doesn't. If I fire up gmaps in a deadzone on my blackberry, it tells me there's no service and does nothing. It ought to cache the road map if not the satellite imagery.

Most of these features have been available in google maps mobile for a year or more now. Turning off satellite view reduces your downloading pretty significantly and ought to keep your battery from going dead too quickly.

if there was any patent issue with any of the bazillion navigation systems in existence, there wouldn't BE so many navigation systems
we all knew this was coming at some point and it's looking great

yes, you can have it plugged into your car, but why should you have to?
it could just download the bitmaps for the route once and disconnect
and what if you're on foot or biking?

i really REALLY love android, but it's greatest strength is also it's greatest weakness..
being so closely tied to the internet has it's drawbacks when you're not in a position to keep it charged
